on the payroll

'You know you're in a great hotel when, while scouting the breakfast buffet, you stumble across a dedicated omelette chef wedged in amongst the muffins and juice jugs. To those who claim an omelette is not a breakfast food we say: if it wasn't a breakfast food why would it be on the payroll?'

I'm rediscovering simple pleasures at the moment. A ham and cheese omelette with a long, tall glass of OJ is definitely one of them.

cinematic style - Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs

So I'm not a particularly huge fan of Anne Hathaway - I'm not a hatha-hater, but I just wouldn't see a movie because she's in it, in the way I would for, say, Carey Mulligan or Natalie Portman - and, let's be honest, I definitely didn't see this movie for Anne Hathaway. I saw it for Jake. Always Jake. But right now I'm in the throes of a 90s revival so big it threatens to take over my wardrobe (cami slip dress: check, birkenstocks: check, overalls: check check check) and I can't help but fall in love with the grungey, grown-up my-so-called-life-y style that Annie is wearing in this film. (or not wearing, when it comes down to it).

I just finished reading the new J.K Rowling book - the one she wrote under a pseudonym - and there's a bit in it where the main character Cormoran Strike describes the apartment of model Ciara Porter as messy and girlish, like the apartment of a teenager left unsupervised. That's how I see anne hathaway's wardrobe in this movie. She's living that dream of adolescents the world round: nobody to tell me what to do. That's why in some sense her ludicrously lovely apartment (struggling artist she is not, judging by that sprawling warehouse space, but then movies never accurately represent socioeconomic realities when it comes to living space, do they?), is endearing and charming in its messiness, and her wardrobe, which is legitimately the kind of stuff Angela Chase used to run around in works, even though she's a grown-up woman with grown-up responsibilities. Maybe that was also a little bit of the 90s - when overalls were the hippest thing since slice bread and tartan shirts with tights with rips in them were trendy. So many of those 90s trends are, in some sense, ageless. Women of all ages run around in pared-back CBK minimalism and look fantastic - even the super youthful Ashley Olsen, or perhaps especially her - and I think the reverse is true for this grungey style, to a point. It's a youthful look but it's one that seems to work across ages. You could take elements of this look and wear them at 15, 35, 55 and 85 ('Fabulous at Every Age!').

Maybe it's the sartorial mood I'm drawn to at the moment. I have started to seek out clothes that appeal to my tactile senses - I want soft denim shirts, thick knitted sweaters, the nubby worn-in patches on flannel shirts, the ease of slipping into a pair of overalls, the sheer comfiness of those german sandals. That's a 90s thing, too. And I look at Anne Hathaway's wardrobe in this movie and I see just that: silky chinese dressing gowns, pin-tucked broderie anglaise, the ridges of burgundy corduroy (!!!) and the classic feel of a woolen camel coat.

the honeymoon period

Definitely still in the thralls of my overall honeymoon period. While in Tasmania I've barely worn anything else, rotating between denim and black twill with a roster of sweaters underneath, a knitted beanie up top and a big coat over it all to combat some of that bass strait chill. Just my kind of weather.

where the ports have names for the sea

And the traveller hopes: "Let me be far from any
Physician"; and the ports have names for the sea;
The citiless, the corroding, the sorrow
And North means to all: "Reject!"

And the great plains are for ever where the cold fish is hunted
And everywhere; the light birds flicker and flaunt;
Under the scolding flag the lover
Of islands may see at last,

Faintly, his limited hope; and he nears the glitter
Of glaciers; the sterile immature mountains intense
In the abnormal day of this world, and a river's
Fan-like polyp of sand.

Ever since my 6th grade project on international cultures I have longed to go to Iceland. Longed for glittering glaciers where the ports have names for the sea, where the cold fish is hunted and the northern lights glisten and the girls are blonder than anything you've ever seen before.

cold beer beautiful girls

"Pink peonies are my favorite flowers; they remind me of my mother's garden in Napa, where I grew up. She received the vase on her 40th birthday, a gift from some of the crew on Apocalypse Now; she gave it to me on my 40th birthday. The yellow Pelican camera case was a gift from the camera crew on my film Somewhere—I'd been introduced to them by the late cinematographer Harris Savides—and later they worked on The Bling Ring. It reminds me of Harris and my camera team. The photo cube was a gift from photographer Andrew Durham—it's got pictures of my daughter from a trip to Morocco and Portugal when she was a toddler. The Contax T3 is my favorite camera; I use it all the time to take snaps on-set. The sparkling wine, called Sofia, is from my father's winery. When I was a kid he told me he would produce a vintage for me when I turned 21. The Louis Vuitton cherries were part of a display at the Vuitton store in Los Angeles; when they were taking the display down I asked if I could have them. The photograph of Charlotte Rampling was a present from the photographer Helmut Newton, whom I love. I'd written a piece about the image for Vogue, and he sent it to me after he read it. The framed artwork at right (with the words "Cold Beer Beautiful Girls") is by Ed Ruscha; I'd borrowed it to use on the set of Somewhere and ended up buying it. I've loved Steiff bears since I was a child. My husband gave me this one years ago. Now it's in my kids' room. I love that I have an excuse to buy more of them."

Sofia Coppola's favourite things. BRB while the internet explodes.

hotel life

Okay, okay, okay. So it might not be all it's cracked up to be. You might turn out real bad - real spoilt, real self-absorbed, real removed from the rigours of the real world - but I just can't help it. Ever since I first read the Eloise books I've wanted to live in a hotel. And Somewhere and Lost in Translation didn't help at all. So those movies were supposed to turn you off hotels, right? Well they never looked more glamorous. It's the dream to live in a hotel, even just for a little while, right? The dream of all romantic, star-gazing teenagers who read Vanity Fair and long for someone to make the bed for them and a room of your own that's not really your own in a building where you live but that's not yours. I'm a bit silly, you know. But I read Teen Vogue religiously every years since 2003 and that's gotta affect a girl, somehow. When I long for travel I think that, somewhere in that longing, it is also a longing for the crisp white sheets, the big wide beds, the perfect bathrooms with the little amenities, the 'good mornings' and the 'good afternoons', the key you have to tap in the lift. So while I'm longing for New York I'm longing for a new hotel, too, and the one that's caught my eye is the Wythe. Bizarrely, first mentioned to me by my mum, who shares (inspires?) my love of hotels, as with so much else. She was going to suggest it to a friend of hers but it turned out to be a bit too hipster. But for me? Well, I think it looks pretty damn good.

into the wild

kinfolk

I really don't think I can wait until November. I was going to try and find some more appropriate images to match this post but then I saw these and I couldn't help myself. A visit to a peony farm..... I don't think the internet will be able to cope after this. Tomorrow I'm heading to Tasmania for a week and a bit. I'm looking forward to some more quiet time to get (even more) acquainted with my thesis. And I'm also looking forward to going to a part of Australia I have always wanted to visit. Tasmania is a foodie capital, a chilly paradise land for people who love coats (pick me! pick me!) and also happens to be the unofficial Australian home of the peony. How about that for a link? I'll be in the North West of Tasmania, so if anyone has any tips for places to eat/visit/see up there (specifically around Burnie/Devonport/Penguin) leave a comment or send me an email hryee1@hotmail.com . I'm mostly looking forward to finding a nice cosy cafe to sit in to knock out my last chapter.

Mini Hotel

Finding a place to stay in Hong Kong is always a drama. There are so many considerations - close to my grandparents, close to public transport, close to the good food spots, close to the shopping hubs and, this trip, close to the Hong Kong Central Library, so I could work on my thesis. Surprisingly, we found a place that fit the bill easily and without any drama. The Mini Hotel in Causeway Bay was the answer, a petite boutique hotel in an amazing location tucked behind the hustle and bustle of Times Square, just off chic Hysan Avenue. The concept of the hotel is exactly what I look for in a place when I travel; intelligent, modern design coupled with great service, simplicity and the right price (as well as comfy armchairs in every room to collapse into after walking around all day, the dream). The Mini Hotel doesn't have the kind of extras that most of the bigger hotels would have - gym, room service - but who needs that when you're in Hong Kong, and the pavements are your treadmill and out the front of your door is some of the best retro coffee shops that Causeway Bay has to offer? It was the perfect base. A big white hotel bed, with crisp white hotel sheets - so fresh, so clean - a convenient location that put us right in the heart of our Hong Kong hood and gloriously cool air-conditioning to battle the humidity of Hong Kong's infamous summer.  Finding a place to stay in Hong Kong is always a drama, but now I've found the Mini Hotel it doesn't need to be anymore.

bling ring

You know me, I'm a jewellery gal. A few pieces of new and old BRVTVS brightening up my thesis writing uniform of stripes and overalls. I'm going to keep adding to this collection whenever I can (especially because I lost my little vectis earrings, twas a sad sad day let me tell you), because I love the refined, delicate look of this anti-bling. There's something so wonderful about little touches of gold winking out from beneath hair. I'm never going to get tired of it. It's a simple look, but you know me, I'm a simple girl. I like things that you love from the start, and that you put on straight away, and that you never, ever, want to take off.

a chair of one's own

The dream has always for an armchair to sit and read in. It's been like that for a long time. I'm not saying that I'd always read in it, I might dump my clothes and handbag on it, or pile up unread magazines next to it, or throw a bit of sheepskin over it. But the possibility of taking time out, closing the doors, and spending a whole day reading would be there. That's why it's the dream.

wool and the gang

Rachel Rutt for Wool and the Gang

There are few simpler thrills than the feeling of a light knit in summer. Bare arms and bare legs and sunkissed brows are all well and good, but the real delight comes from slipping into a loosely-knitted sweater in the evening, or popping a brightly coloured tunic over a bikini on the way to the beach. Knitwear has this inescapable wintery feel to it, and wearing it in summer feels like such a subversion. I have a pile of light cotton knits (Amy Kaehne's are my favourite!) which are on constant rotation when the weather heats up. But now I have some new pieces to add to the wishlist. Rachel Rutt - one of my favourite Australian models, a real raw and natural beauty - has collaborated with British-based company Wool and the Gang on a series of 'knit kits' or patterns and styles for knitted garments. Rutt famously has one of the most interesting personal styles on the australian model circuit and these designs play into that playful, organic bent to her wardrobe. There's a knitted bikini, the perfect breezy tunic, a cropped sweater, a tubular skirt and a cut-out one piece. You get to pick the colour of your wool ('Happy Shiny Cotton', perfect for summer) and all you need to add yourself is needles. I haven't knitted in a long time - not since that first holey scarf pieced together in patches during visits to my grandma (you could tell which bits I had knitted and which she had knitted by the amounts of dropped stitches in each section). But knitting is definitely having its second (second) wind. I remember about 5 years ago when everyone was talking about the revival of knitting, I think there's another one now. Back then it was more about reviving the craft, now it definitely has a fashion feel to it. Oversized scarves, pom pom beanies and knitted clutches are merely the beginning. I think I might have to get a 'knit kit' starter pack and try again...

cinematic style - ladies takin' care of business in various

Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger in Cold Mountain // Cate Blanchett in The Missing // Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit // Sharon Stone in The Quick and The Dead // Andie Macdowell in Bad Girls

Oh I love a good western/frontier flick. I love the denim, I love the bandanas, I love the big coats and the even bigger hats. And I love it when the ladies take care of business. It's just simpler that way. I'm literally counting down the days/hours/minutes/seconds till a piece apart arrives at my chameleon and I can really live out my frontier dreams.

taking stock

1 and 3 - Miranda Kerr by Alasdhair Mclellan for Vogue UK September 2013 2 - Fashion Guitar

If I still wrote wardrobe planning lists - maybe I should bring them back, hmmm? - miranda would be on the top of the agenda. Not miranda herself per se, she's a babe and all, but she's just a little bit too perfect. I mean miranda in this editorial. This summer I want an extra piercing in my ear (sleepers, natch), tousled, beachy wave, the kind of tan that glows and a pair of double strap birkenstocks - in classic black or a washed-out taupe - for wearing with everything and nothing, jeans and tee shirts, and never taking them off.

moderne

'Her manner is shy, but casual and friendly, and her gamine face crinkles easily into an attractive, rather secret smile. She wore a simple black sweater and gray skirt; if she is a vain girl the only indication of it was her high-heeled shoes, which were of elegantly worked light gray leather... She is sincere and helpful, but questions that are pompous or elaborate, or about personal life, or that might be interpreted as challenging her work, are liable to elicit only a simple “oui” or “non,” or “je ne sais pas—je ne sais pas du tout”—and then an amused, disconcerting smile.'

On Francoise Sagan's style, The Paris Review Art of Fiction No. 15

La Garconne Moderne is the epitome of how I wished I dressed. Therein lies the slight - and yes, slightly upsetting - distinction, in that even though in my head I look like this as I go about my daily chores it all ends up a bit scruffier due to my general inability to look put together. Such is life. As it is the quarterly look books that are posited unceremoniously into my inbox provide me with endless sartorial inspiration. A pair of straight leg jeans and a turtleneck here, a tunic and a barette there, there's something about the way these ensembles - inspired by thoughtful, understated icons like Joan Didion - speak for themselves, just loud enough to be noticed by those who are truly looking for them. Style that is secretive in its elegance and distinction, that conceals much - the body, the insecurities, the price tags - but that still has that certain something the French like to call je ne sais quoi. Every season La Garconne Moderne has it, and I want it, oh so badly.

the nanny

Nick Dewolf's images of his French au pair Cozette in 1967, Boston

I love nannying. I love mucking around with cute kids and making a mess and getting paid for doing the kind of silly things that I would normally do for free. In my head being a nanny looks like this - white shirts tucked into flared jeans and tousled hair and long limbs. To be honest it looks a lot less underdone-glamour when I'm doing it - in overalls and slightly worse-for-wear sandals - but I like to think that I get some of that inner glow that being around kids gives you. The other day I nannied and for most of the day we lay on the trampoline, looking at the clouds and watching the slow, solitary dance of a plane skywriting across the winter blue. It was perfect in the kind of way that makes me realise that it doesn't matter that I'm not some gorgeous au pair, if that makes any sense at all.
