copa cabana

I have always loved Clare Press's designs at Mrs Press because of their fun and flirty take on vintage fashion. There are no uptight, laced up looks, but rather a modern gal's way of wearing history: very much tongue in chic and totally cute. Her collection today was no different, this time migrating a little from her usual parisienne lace and cashmere look to the realms of bright, colourful copa cabana - complete with fruit basket fascinators and giant sunhats. From the be-ribboned raffia espadrilles and to the full skirts and bobble necklaces in an array of rich colours, the Mrs Press girl was ready to have fun. And how could you not, in sundresses with sequin pailette bodices or cropped tops in melon pink flashing a little bit of tanned, toned tummy. It was part relaxing on the beach, cocktail in hand, part samba-ing the night away in pineapple print frocks. It was sunny and unassuming and bright, but most all, very, very fun.

Who could not be cheered by clothes that were filled with such good humour? It's certainly evident that colour is going to be the trend of the season, but Mrs Press did it in a way that was fresh and new. This was colour - vintage style. Neon brights were eschewed for pigment-rich colours of sand, surf and sky, of guava and bananas more strawberries than the eye can see in various incarnations of bias cut evening gowns, wide circle skirts, little beaded boleros and silky high waisted pants. Perfect to lift the mood of the dreary weather and set the scene for RAFW next week. If it's half as fun as this, we're in for a good time.

An Image of Leda, Frank O'Hara

my meagre photos - forgive me please! :)

I just got back from what can only be described as a breathtaking evening and Ginger and Smart. Their off-schedule presentation of "Anon" Spring Summer 2011 was held at the Finger Wharf in Woolloomoolloo, and was frequented by the beautiful people (hello Emma Lung, you are oh so pretty) and bloggers alike. It was lovely to catch up with Zanita, Margaret, Emily and Sara, as well as meet Amie, Montarna and Nicole for the first time (check out all of their blogs for much better pictures than my measly point and shoot, hmmpph). It was exciting to get a glimpse of what to expect next week at RAFW, and to see what has been going on in the minds of the Alexandra and Genevieve Smart, the creative sister duo behind Ginger and Smart.

Their penchant for rich, heavy pigment colours, delicate patterns and loose, sheer layering evolved in this collection with laser cut details, 3D textures and embellishment fit for their poetry theme. Skirts and dresses had letters stitched to them and sheer pleats were gathered together like the pages of a book. The mottled, colourful squares of the invitation found themselves on collars, cuffs and shirts. Easy luxe grey marle tee shirts had cut out letters with mesh inserts, matching the sheer print of sentences on dresses. The sisters Smart said that they were inspired by poetry, the beauty of words and the variety of interpretations and meaning that can come about from them. Their languid, loll-about loose dresses juxtaposed against the masculine tailoring of blazers and leather shorts providing a wealth of difference and scope for interpretation - there were equal parts a very "me" silhouette of maxi layers as there were cool girl separates. Shoes ran the gamut of lace up flat brogues to towering grey wedges with neon yellow straps. The colours mixed rust with hot pink, navy blue, my favourite spectrum of milky browns and splatterings of neon brights with everything. Plenty of room for interpretation and something for everyone to gush over afterwards.

It was all about contrast, something that Ginger and Smart do well. They can easily ground a floaty dress with a pair of masculine braces and a huge envelope clutch, just as they can dress up simple cropped pants with a slouchy hot pink blouse. Their command of colour and prints is remarkable and - as evidenced tonight - breathtaking, but they also do a great neutral, just as rich and exciting as their brights. Throw all of these elements together and you have the glorious cacophony of Ginger and Smart. The girl that waltzes by you in her swishy skirt as bright as a star. They said they were inspired by poetry. Well, this is the poem that came to mind after seeing this show. The Image of Leda is one of two poems Frank O'hara wrote about his interpretations and understandings of cinema, then a new medium but it can equally describe this collection. "Oh what is this light that holds us fast"?

make that 15

One of my purchases from Europe that I was most excited about was this Zara coat with leather sleeves. I couldn't believe when a coat 2 sized too small fit me and looked so good - I had to have it. I clearly wasn't alone. During London Fashion Week in February it became a bit of a hilarious game among me and my friends to count how many we saw - at the close of the week it was up to 14 including 2 guys. Well, I thought I would be safe in Sydney, but with Zara just open (and my coat stocked there! despite being sold out across Europe) I think RAFW next week may be a repeat of London Fashion Week, with this coat playing the hero piece. Still, despite all the hype, despite all the people wearing it, I still love it. And the best thing is, everyone keeps asking me if it's Celine.

outfit snippets

"It's more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail - then you can dream all the rest around it. Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?" Dries Van Noten

Lately I've had a lot of fun shooting self-portrait type snippets of my outfits each day on my iphone. It's nothing on an SLR of course, and it is nice to get a full picture, but I kind of like seeing zoomed in details of outfits, fabrics, accessories, jewellery. It's about capturing the essence and the atmosphere of a look rather than just its obvious projection - something I've talked about before. Zooming in can be intriguing and fascinating and exciting. And I love it. Expect much more where these came from.

1 - swishy nathan smith maxi skirt and sportsgirl jumper
2 - gary bigeni maxi skirt, bassike tee shirt, minty wang, benah kodi bag
3 - country road skirt and chanel ballet flats
4 - carly hunter shearling, COS tunic, gary bigeni maxi skirt, k.jacques sandals
5 - chanel ballet flats, country road skirt, sportsgirl jumper, opening ceremony coat, YSL ring

blunt

What I love about this girl's hair actually isn't the ombre look, surprisingly, but the blunt ends. I've spoken about a blunt cut on long hair before, and it's still haunting me. Do I go for the chop or maintain my easy layers? I've never been so unsure about a hair cut before. I know I really want to get a blunt, really straight cut, but then everyone is telling me that with thick hair and lots of it - my lifelong existence - a blunt cut can just be too much of a good thing. I worry that it's a heavy look, that it can drag your whole hair style downwards. Her ombre/balayage is great, but to be honest I've kind of got that thing going already, if only because I haven't got my colour done in so long now and it's starting to grow out a little bit too long that it looks dip dyed. I do like it, but that's not what intrigues me here. It's that blunt, straight edge on super long hair. Can you pull it off, or will it pull you down?

going to the chapel

With royal wedding fever hitting a pitch that can only be described as "bonkers" and every australian tv host worth their salt (and oversized novelty pay cheques) decamping to a nondescript london location to give banal, almost uniform coverage of every minute detail of the wedding (kate bought calvin klein underwear! she shops at the green grocer! william wears jeans!) I have to say - I'm loving it. But then, I'm a big royalist, I love a little bit of spectacle, and I am a huge Tatler fan. As such, I'm well up to date on the state of Kate and Wills' Welsh love getaway, their bridesmaids, who got an invite to the wedding (and who didn't!), what they'll eat at the reception and who will design the dress (oh sarah burton, you have my vote). All that's left is for me to indulge in a little bit of polyvore-imagination to envisage what I would wear to the wedding of the century. My picks aren't exactly super conventional, but then we know Kate and William appreciate people for who they are, and would love someone to buck convention, even if just a teeny little bit. And besides, it doesn't really matter what you wear if the Best Man is your date, and of course, if I was invited to the Royal Wedding it would be as Prince Harry's girlfriend. Hmm.. Dreaming's fun.

Outfit 1

Well, I do love to suit upAlexander Wang tuxedo jacket, equipment shirt, Christys fedora, Celine shoes, Jordy Askill ring, Topshop Lips in Mink, Benah Kodi Mini bag, Alexander Wang tuxedo pants.

Why do the interwebz tempt me with the perfect hat? It seems like every single damn cool girl has one, and it's perfect. I can be really picky when I want to be about accessories, and unfortunately this is one of those times. Despite promising toppers from Sportsgirl and Country Road, I haven't found my perfect one yet. It has to be in this trilby style - wide brimmed and stiff and a little bit amish. I don't want none of these Breakfast at Tiffany's floppy types. I just wish I could find my perfect hat before RAFW next week. I can think of a milion outfits I would love to wear it with. Something just like this one, thank you very much. Hmmpph.

marni mania

Back in 08 when this blog was just a wee little thing I was knee deep in a sartorial phase that i now term "marni mania". I was obsessed with all things bright, colourful, structured and essentially marni-style silhouettes - boxy tops, big circle skirts, bright patterns and clunky jewellery. It came on literally out of nowhere and resulted in a lot of outfits that were essentially big tunics belted in over long skirts in contrasting, clashing patterns, heavy sandals and the piece de resistance - my marni bag purchased on sale in Hong Kong for a song. I have to say that I have truly graduated from marni mania. I still love the marni style, but kookiness and quirky eccentricity just isn't me anymore - such as I know "me" to be. Still, seeing these pictures of the Belinda and Vogue Australia lunch with Marni ambassador Carolina Castiglioni (daughter of my old style icon Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni creative director) makes me just a little bit nostalgic for the heyday of my Milanese wardrobe. Well, that and what looks like a glorious lunch with a beautiful table setting. If there's one thing I love more than clothes it is a very good lunch or dinner party - great food executed to perfection. Charming!

will the real style icon please stand up?

It's funny how much of a disconnect you can have with your own style. Not that I think I dress like these people, but if I was to name a style icon - as I am often asked to do and I do so in such a state of blithering idiocy I'm surprised people ask me to do it again - it would be along the lines of Yasmin Sewell, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Phoebe Philo. But the reality of the situation is that I dress nothing like any of those women, partly because I don't have the funds, partly because I'm still really rough around the edges and I don't look polished no matter what I wear, and partly because my style is, in reality very different to them. So why do I name them as icons? I think it comes down to the fact that I want to look like them, which is, after all, what an icon should be. I want to look as quirky cool as Taylor, as wonderfully laid-back and comfortable in my clothes as Yasmin and as turned out as Phoebe. But I often don't. I end up looking like someone else entirely. I usually end up looking like Ashley Olsen.

Ashley Olsen? I would never have named her as a style icon. Not because I don't like her style, but because I don't religiously check her thread on tfs or blog about how much I love her. I don't keep up with what she's wearing and my interest in her is often The Row based. But the other day while having coffee with a friend of mine and dissecting the latest Who Weekly magazine we came across a picture of Ashley Olsen in a long skirt, big jumper and coat. "You dress just like her" she said. And then frowned. "Minus the loafers, of course."

olsen gallery, tfs, celebrity bag styles

The fact is, I do dress just like her. Not all the time, but most of the time. I'm not big into flared pants and she does wear some crazy ass fur, but her casual style that I can only express as 90s minimalist meets ladies who lunches seems to kind of sum up my love for simple winter layering and long, languid lines. It's all Reed Krakoff's first collection, 90s editorials featuring long turtle neck sweaters and mannish style overcoats that swamp you in fabric. I abhor anything fitted. So does she. She seems to swan around in masses of fabric and drapey layers - as I do. She doesn't wear tights, see previous post. She has messy hair and no make up, my usual state of appearance. I don't wear loafers and I don't have a beaten up vintage Kelly bag, but I do wear a raft of different strappy flat sandals or ballet flats and a small frame buckle bag of some kind. She's frumpy and mumsy - and that's been said of my style before - although in a slightly nicer way "drapey", "languid", "relaxed". We both love a good degree of slouch to our clothes, lines that are long and lean and wearing things that are probably a bit too big for us. How have I not seen this before? Even when I was putting together a collage for my review of The Row's resort collection way back last august, it didn't occur to me that maybe our style had more of a crossroads than I thought. It took a completely disinterested 3rd party, a lot of caffeine and a who weekly magazine.

Currently on my list of desired purchases - wide brimmed hats, mannish oversized knits, the perfect leopard print coat, a kelly bag (ha ha ha), a huge scarf.

bare necessity

It is rare that an article in Vogue UK resonates with me. I love reading it, and the editorials by Lucinda Chambers and Kate Phelan are sumptuous fashion feasts for the eyes, but as is often the case with Vogue, the features tend to reach to a woman far above my station - such as it is. Women who think monogrammed luggage at 8000 quid a pop is a good wedding present and who save the excess baggage fee on commercial airlines by fedex-ing their shopping home. As much as I love it, Vogue UK is essentially Tatler just with better clothes - don't get me wrong, I do get a bit of a guilty pleasure out of Tatler. At first glance, the 'Bare Necessity' feature by Vicki Ward in last October's Vogue UK was another one of the elitist prescriptive pieces that went right over my head. Do as the New Yorker's do, don't wear tights, get your driver to drive you around yadda yadda yadda... But then I read it again. Don't wear tights. Now that's a message I can get behind.

I don't wear tights. I just don't like them. It comes from having to wear them all the time at school - being told what to wear is probably my biggest pet peeve. That's why I hate wearing black at work and rage against it whenever I'm not there (brown is my neutral of choice, thank you very much). When you are told constantly what to wear it turns you off wearing those very same things in your everyday life. Now I cannot wear tights, even when it is super cold outside. Sure, I have an advantage over my tight-wearing friends. I like long skirts. It does help to have calf-grazing skirts on if you are going to bare your legs if only because it's extra material to keep them warm. But as I discovered in Europe at the beginning of the year, this can only go so far. On particularly cold days I was known to don two long skirts one over the other in a bid to keep warm. I didn't pack any tights on my trip because I was determined to prove my point. The double long skirt served much the same purpose that the double tights do - that extra little bit of warmth. The lengths some people go to...

Vogue also recommends piling on the layers up top to counter act a slight chill down south. They recommend fur vests, big scarfs, oversize jackets and beanies. I would agree with this, and also add that boots help a lot. If you're not wearing ballet flats (as I so often do), the little tops of your feet stay warm which makes all the difference. A longer length of skirt certainly helps - this lady shot by the Sart, whilst very cute, is pushing the boundaries of bare legs in winter I think. And I will add this - tons of moisturiser. With your bare legs left unprotected to the elements, you have to up the dose of moisture so they don't go all scaly and dry. I was using Kiehl's creme de corps almost twice-daily in Europe at the beginning of the year. Not wearing tights isn't easy. But it's not a look that's all about endorsing having personal drivers and big fur coats, either. It's about embracing a sense of 90s minimalism - when it wasn't ripped tights or grunge, but simple drapey clothes, warm layers, and flashing a little bit of skin in defiance to wintery climates. Not wearing tights and having bare legs is my way of keeping the balance between covering up and baring all. I love doing it, not only because I think the ankle is the new erogenous zone, but because it just looks so good with a calf-length skirt and a long coat. It creates a balance in the way that off the shoulder knit wear creates a balance and rolled up sleeves creates a balance. Nothing in fashion should be perfect, and baring your legs is a way of counteracting perfection.

Black opaques do create a beautiful silhouette in the right situation. But a flash of bare legs can be even better.

drawing board

How great is this? My friend Talisa drew it, and it's fantastic. She makes me want this two toned Cabas even more now. All that watercolour makes it look so dreamy. More and more I've been finding colour and colour combinations inspiring. Bright red and cream is a favourite, as well as this - tan and peach. It's not about juxtaposing two contrasting colours, but about finding an equilibrium between shades that is harmonious and really, really beautiful. The two of these together is just lovely, don't you think?

all i want to do

vintage sartorialist

Nothing in this world makes me happier than layering. It's true. That's why I like travelling in winter so much, that's why I like coats and knitwear and things that are sleeveless and vests and long skirts and 2 long skirts so much. Because you can layer them all up together to create a beautiful outfit that is practical too. Scrolling through the Sartorialist archives searching for a specific picture today I happened on this lady - resplendent in fuzzy knitwear and a cropped coat. Now I really want to break out my Opening Ceremony coat and pair it with my camel coloured knits and a big scarf..  I remember last year I had a particularly fabulous night with one of my best friends. We didn't do anything remarkable - just met up for dinner at Love Supreme, shared a bottle of wine and laughed and laughed and laughed. I remember because it was the week before fashion week and I was freaking out thinking I had nothing to wear. I threw on that coat, my old faithful chanel flats and ran out the door to meet her because I was late and realised that I had plenty to wear. I only have to work out how to layer it.

I know a few guys who would love Natalia Vodianova to be their Easter Bunny... Me - well, it doesn't matter if it's Natalia Vodianova or Mickey Rourke. As long as they're bringing chocolate, it's fine with me.

Happy Easter everyone.

summer loving

kanon vodka

Whenever the weather turns foul I always sit down and watch the Day After Tomorrow, rugged up in my warmest winter woollies as if I, too, was settling in for a second ice age. Today there was some crazy weather - torrential downpour and storm and chilly breezes. Watching this movie with a big bowl of soup I like to fancy myself Emmy Rossum to Jake Gyllenhaal, waiting on Dennis Quaid to come rescue to me. At least there's the promise of summer - palm trees, bare skin and blinding light - at the end of it all. The last time I watched this movie was in New York on the first day of fashion week. It was February and my friend and I had been caught in the middle of a blizzard that grounded planes (including the one carrying the samples for MK&A's The Row fashion show), closed the subway and almost froze my arms off in my decidedly unpractical sleeveless coat (serves me right). When we finally got home to her Brooklyn apartment after a day trudging through snow trying to get to fashion shows we shrugged off all our wet and freezing clothes, rugged up in all manner of sweatshirts and track pants and snuggled into the couch to watch a movie that sort of summed up how we had spent the better part of the day battling against crazy snowfall so thick we couldn't see our own hands in front of our faces. I mean, sure, it wasn't quite as bad as the film. But I like to think I lasted through my own ice age that day.

worn to bits

I take reasonably good care of my clothes, but I have to say, I have gotten rather blase about them getting ruined of late. I scratched my Celine bag 3 days into owning it and my friend got red lipstick on my shearling vest that will not come out. I guess it comes down to the bottom line, which is that if you love something you should wear it, no matter what happens to it. The scratches, the rips, the tears, the marks - they are all signs of being loved and being worn, which, in the end, is what clothes are all about, right? I think that the best look for shoes is the lived in look. I love it when the leather gets all soft and marked - and your feet have left grooves in the soles because you wear them so much. I love it when my suede ankle boots crease right in the middle where my foot normally bends as I walk, and I love that my k.jacques sandals perfectly fit my feet that they slip on without any restriction or difficulty. More so than bags and clothes and other accesories, shoes get the most wear and tear. I have completely ruined ballet flats - in fact I still wear some of mine that I love even though they have holes in them, which is quite naughty really. But I can't help it. Just like my favourite pair of Levis 501s, I love them too much to get rid of them. And I can't think of anything better, really, than truly loving your clothes. It means that you're happy when you wear them.

must you go?

I am loving today. It is one of those classic Sydney Autumn days that makes you proud to be Australian - the sun comes up like it hasn't in so long and bathes you in golden light. Surprisingly for Good Friday all the best cafes are open, and I had a wonderful breakfast this morning with an old and beloved friend at Deli Bottega in Bondi Beach, a perfect coffee and wonderful mushy avocado and mushrooms on toast. Today is the first official day of my uni holidays, so I'm relishing doing things that I haven't been able to do in a little while. I can sit down with a cup of tea and a hot cross bun and read. Right now I'm finally, finally getting around to Must You Go, Antonia Fraser's memoirs of her life with her husband playwright Harold Pinter. It is a beautiful love story, and I am loving every sentence. Peppered throughout the book are slices of Pinter's poetry, haikus written on the corner of restaurant napkins and slipped under pillows in the morning. This is my favourite one.

"What did we hear?
It was the breath we took when we first met.
Listen. It is here."
