dancing in the moonlight

Is this what all weddings ought to be like? Bathed in the dusky glow of northern beaches summer, tinged with a rich, heady red-wine wash, tasting like the best days at bread & circus (which is to say, every day), played out against the strains of gentle waves lapping the sand? So good, so right, so perfect, that the bride - the beautiful, beautiful bride, in her beautiful, beautiful dress - couldn't help but jump out of her seat to spread her arms wide and smile a silky, ecstatic smile and sing at the top of her voice when the talented band strung up this song. Such a fine and natural sight. As far as evenings go, it's going to be pretty hard to top this one.

cinematic style - babes of the 90s

Winona Ryder in Girl Interrupted // Alicia Silverston in Clueless (this is an Alaia!) // Liv Tyler in Empire Records // Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions // Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations

I'm going to a 90s party tonight with all of my best gals. We've known each other since school - some of us since it was actually the 90s - and there's no-one else that I would rather dance the night away with (to the strains of if ya gettin' down, natch). Since my wardrobe is steadily becoming more and more 90s by the day I pretty much didn't even have to make a costume. I'm going to wear overalls, birkenstocks, a tartan shirt tied around my waist and a backwards cap. Grunge goodness.

what a lot of parties

"'Oh Nina, what a lot of parties.' (... masked parties, Savage parties, Victorian parties, Greek parties, Wild West parties, Russian parties, Circus parties, parties where one had to dress as somebody else, almost naked parties in St John’s Wood, parties in flats and studios and houses and ships and hotels and night clubs, in windmills and swimming-baths, tea parties at school where one ate muffins and meringues and tinned crab, parties at Oxford where one drank brown sherry and smoked Turkish cigarettes, dull dances in London and comic dances in Scotland and disgusting dances in Paris – all that succession and repetition of massed humanity … Those vile bodies...)"

Evelyn Waugh, Vile Bodies

Paris Hilton by Sofia Coppola in Elle July 2013

We all seem to be drawn to star quality - the brightness and the ebullience that makes famous people so famous - like moths to a flame. We pore over the pages of gossip magazines and discuss celebrities with our friends with a very real sense of investment into their lives. Some more than others, yes, but it's something we have programmed into our DNA since we first tore out that Leonardo DiCaprio poster from Dolly magazine, or we played our 'mysterious girl' single so many times we wore it out. It's heartening - endearing even - to realise that even the loftiest of lofty idols is capable of being starstruck. Sofia Coppola, the girl crush to end all girl crushes, bought up in the foothills of Hollywood and never short on celebrity acquaintances, is as drawn to star quality as the rest of us. It's pretty clear from this spread on Paris Hilton in the July issue of Elle US. The socialite, dolled up in tasteful makeup, canoodling her dog beneath baroque chandeliers and mirrored bedheads, is a slightly toned-down version of herself, but still radiating that sense of celebrity and persona and money which is really what we talk about when we talk about fame.

Sofia understands - as F.Scott Fitzgerald and Evelyn Waugh understood before her - that what draws us to stars (talent or no, Paris Hilton is certainly a star) is not actually the looks or the love but the lifestyle. When we see a celebrity we don't ever really see the movies they have been in or the model they're sleeping with but the parties, what a lot of parties, that they call meaningless but to us, mere humans, seem like everything. When people pose the question 'why is Kim Kardashian famous for doing nothing' they are slightly missing the point. What she 'does' is live a moneyed lifestyle that speaks of everything that money can bring. It doesn't have to be Kim K. Pick your poison. But I've seen enough Gossip Girl to know that now, more than ever, we are as closely aligned to the celebrity-obsessed, stargazing society of the 1920s as we ever were. We dream in technicolour, we look in repetition and we long for carelessness. All of Sofia's movies have, in some way or another, dealt with this central conceit of being young and beautiful and so very, very rich. Perhaps because she is part of that world she always treats her characters if not through a rose-coloured lens then at least without judgement. Don't ask me whether that's a good or a bad thing, I love her too much to be able to answer. But I know that I can't wait to see The Bling Ring because I, like every other warm-blooded human being just cannot get enough of that foul dust that floats in the wake of dreams.

picnic

Photos by Rachel Kara, Words by me. See the full post on Rachel's blog!

Some days are made for ginger cake. They are those days at the end of August - an Australian August, a Sydney august - when there are blue skies and bright sun but a stubborn, resistant chill in the air. I'm not going without a fight, it says. You can't get rid of me that easily. Because we try, how we try! to shake off the cobwebs of winter as we shrug on little chambray shirts and strappy sandals and defiantly parade our first bare legs of the season. And those are the days that you need ginger cake. You need it because it's cold and sometimes only cake will do, and if it's going to be cake you might as well make it something dense but not overpowering, with a handful of grated carrot thrown into the mix, and a practiced, too-easy shake of cinnamon (from the wrist, of course!) and a good cup - or two, if you're particularly generous, which we are, of course - of crystallised ginger which you cut into gem-like slivers and distribute with a fair but gentle hand (noblesse oblige) throughout the honey-hued mix in the scant few moments before you put it in the oven. That's why you need ginger cake. But you want ginger cake because it's really, really, really delicious.

There were other things at this picnic for a trio of friends, too. Some ice tea and raspberry lemonade to drink. A loaf of crusty bread, some butter (not French, but Danish, which is the next best thing), two different types of jam (Rose Bakery's apricot and lavender leaf and home-made cherry and vanilla), Fromage D'affinois, which is a hard-working little crowd-pleaser of a cheese if ever we saw one, and some ham off the bone.

We planned this picnic spontaneously - as most of our food excursions are - over the counter at bread and circus as we saw the glimmer of a shared Saturday afternoon off. Lucinda, whose birthday celebrations we missed last month, was dragged along for the ride, and our duo became a trio. The problem with spontaneous picnics is that the weather doesn't always co-operate. It was just a tiny little bit too cold to be sitting out all afternoon, even this late in August, with just a cotton rug for warmth. As the sun sunk further and further out of sight and the wind kicked up - as winds are loath to do, cheeky little things - none of us wanted to be the first to pike out and make the move inside. Part of this was because of the array of food before us, too good to abandon because of a trifling little wind, but part of it was because of how great it all really was. Spontaneous and unpretentious and totally easy. An afternoon of laughter and advice and confidences shared with exasperated shrugs punctuated by that comforting and even a little therapeutic routine of sharing food. Just some rough-cut bread and butter and jam, some slices of cheese and ham, and a generous slab of ginger cake.

You could say that me and Rachel are food explorers - we go botanising amongst the produce, to butcher Benjamin's phrase - so see us bake a cake, review The Grounds and have breakfast in New York at Cafe Gitane. More food stuff to come, as always!

give a little get a little

one - breakfast, lunch, tea by rose carrarini and sophie dahl's from season to season
two and three - rose bakery details
four - Sophie Dahl detail and Diptyque's wardrobe block
five - Prawn and avocado ceviche recipe and Michael Kors watch
six - beautiful birthday peonies
seven - antique chinese box and figuier candle
eight - thank you cards

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? The good news is that I was totally spoiled on Friday. I received some absolutely beautiful presents (with some still on their way) and I am feeling so warm and smiley and loved. My brother gave me the second Sophie Dahl cook book – From Season to Season – and I can’t wait to laze back one day and read it. Longtime readers of the blog will know that Sophie Dahl is one of my biggest idols, she has a wonderful turn of phrase and an enchanting writing voice and I really love her recipes. She uses a lot of seafood because she’s a vegetarian (pescetarian?) and seafood is my main food group, so what’s not to love? I can’t wait to try out this prawn and avocado ceviche which seems ridiculously, devilishly easy. Perfect for a balmy summer eve, no?

I also received the Rose Bakery cook book – finally! finally – filled with saturated, simple pictures of every day life at the cafe. I love that alongside the recipe for the famous carrot cake and tartlets there’s shots of crumpled butter foil packages and discarded vegetable cuttings. These absolutely stunning peonies in the sweetest of pinks came from Sydney's best florist, Poho and really are a gift themselves. Peonies are my favourite flower and these are the favourite peonies I've ever received. They came in a brown paper package tied up with string along with this limited edition Figuier candle. It's a special christmas version with green wax and a thick green glass body. The scent is so subtle, just like Philosykos. So between peonies and Figuier my room is smelling bloody marvellous and add the Diptyque 34 wardrobe block to the mix, which is a really masculine, wood-and-leather kind of scent, and is the most luxurious thing ever. I've already hung it up in my wardrobe and can't wait for everything to take on the smell of 34 boulevard saint-germain, 75006.

The antique Chinese Box is the perfect keepsake treasure trove and came from my neighbours, who graciously let me have a party in our shared garden with reasonably loud early-00s hip hop and mango dacquiris. And oh, how could I forget that michael kors watch... How I have adored thee from afar! It's a tiny bit ghetto fabulous with all that blinging gold, but it's the perfect thing to add to a simple outfit. A family friend gifted it to me very generously and I haven't taken it off since. In between some lazy brunches and summer time reading I've been writing thank you notes while watching SVU, natch), on these cute note cards I found in my mum's forgotten stationery drawer. I love the look of hibiscus, totally summery and recall naff hawaian shirts and all that. I can't believe how many things I received from my silly little wish list. Royally spoiled, I have been. And it's not even my birthday yet! I can't quite believe it. So I thought it was only fitting that i announce the winners of the mimcollective giveaway. Miss T and Hayley, congratulations, when you get a chance send me an email with your postal address so I can get your wonderful prize off to you. I love giveaways so much, there'll be a new one of the blog very soon. And you're going to love this one, you really are.

And the bad news? Well. Because of the rain no-one bought any cameras, so I don't have any pictures. The only one I have is of a topless waiter... that's a long story. But don't worry, I plan to wear my dress again (I better, all things considered). And I swear I'll get a picture next time!

the quiet before the storm

This is it. Tomorrow is the big party. I'm sorry I haven't been posting as much but I've been so busy I've hardly even sat down all week. That is true. I'm so excited and so nervous and so eager and I can't wait to put on my dress and I just want to be 21 even though it's not even my real birthday but oh, it might as well be and I really just cannot keep the smile off my face! I'm not going to let anything rain on my parade. Except, well, actual rain. And November was supposed to be the driest month? Oh well. What can you do. Just hike up your dress and hope for the best. I hope there'll be pictures to show you next week sometime...

hot weather likes...

When I took these pictures it was blazing hot and it was very clear that summer was rearing its ugly head but now the grey clouds have swooped in and it's raining! That's Sydney, isn't it. The worst thing is that the weather forecast is showing rain for this Friday - the day of the birthday party - I'm going to cry if it rains. Anyway. Here are some of the things that go perfectly with summer weather.

one and two. a skincare routine. here's mine courtesy of Aesop and Grown. I got the yen for having a grown up, big-girls top shelf after reading Into the Gloss. And now, thanks to a well-timed staff incentive at david jones and a teensy bit of a windfall I have one. Rachel is so right, there's something about that tangy, zesty smell and that old-school packaging that brightens up your day. When a bright summer sun gets you out of bed early in the morning, Aesop products and grown body wash (which I first learnt about in the recent issue of RUSSH, pictured) will put a smile on your face. I've stuck to this routine so far which is really good for me! Normally I get sick and tired after a few days and revert back to cold water a la Jane Birkin.

three and four. Sonoma honey spice breakfast muesli, diptyque philosykos and a big, light wrap scarf. I really identify with the smells of figs, of cinnamon-spice and beautiful, high quality organic cotton. All three of those smells make me smile and remind me of sunny weather, whether it be my favourite perfume, my favourite breakfast or my favourite cover up. There's something so very glamorous and yet so very simple about throwing a wrap shawl on. This one is one of my favourites, it's by fouta and it's from The Corner Shop. I've recently taken to throwing it on over whatever I'm wearing, either completely wrapping it around or just draping it over my shoulders. It has the most glorious, clean, cotton smell. I've always wanted to wear a shawl a la Meryl Streep in Out of Africa, too, (which you all know I love dearly), somewhat in the manner of this. I think there's something very lovely about that tie, but I've never been able to perfect it. A shawl like that, a bowl of muesli and a spritz of philosykos. What else is there?

five and six. Me and Ro jewellery, photographed against Vogue UK's Jane Birkin feature in the October 2011 issue. I've received some beautiful early early birthday presents recently and they are probably the best things going on in my life right now. My delicate jewellery collection is swelling dramatically and I love it! This Me and Ro tiny flower pendant is a mix of gold and silver, which I think is rather modern and very beautiful and is definitey one of my favourite things (remember my tiffany and co lock pendant?). It sits just at the base of my neck, and I've been wearing it by itself and totally simple, with this beautiful Me and Ro silver ring (another gift from the greatest of friends!). It is so thin and is adorned with a little flower. I've taken to wearing it as a memory ring on my first knuckle somewhat akin to this catbird one, or the way decade diary wears her rings. Hot weather doesn't want you to wear too much jewellery - it's too cumbersome. It prefers one or two very simple pieces and a big tee shirt and very little else. And that's fine with me!
