cinematic style (sort of) - the college sweatshirt in various

Kate Bosworth in an MIT hoodie in 21 // Dakota Johnson in a Stanford sweatshirt in The Social Network // Reese Witherspoon in a Harvard sweatshirt in Legally Blonde // Anne Hathaway in an Edinburgh University sweatshirt in One Day // Zoe Saldana in an Atlanta university hoodie in Drumline

So many college sweatshirts, so little time. I still haven't managed to get my hands on a sydney uni one yet, but I've got a few weeks left (!!!!!). I feel like maybe I squandered some of my best sweatshirt-wearing years, but I guess the whole point is once you've got one, there's nothing stopping you breaking it out every weekend for the rest of your life. University, you're a keeper.

ps. let the record show that I actually think drumline is a really good movie. Anything with a musical number, a southern college setting and a hint of "boy on the wrong side of the tracks turns good with kind-hearted girl" and I'm there. And Zoe Saldana is the ultimate babe.

my kind of girl

coolspotters via gone with the fashion

I've never been the world's biggest Kate Bosworth fan. I mean, sure, she's gorgeous, and she's redefines the word "fashion plate", but she doesn't really do much, right? When was her last movie? When was her last good movie? 21 was okay, but then are we going to sit here and compare it to, say, wall street 2? I mean, she's no Carey Mulligan, that's for sure. But what I've realised when it comes to celebrities is that, really, it doesn't matter one bit. Because if I see just one shot like this - one inspiring, exciting, completely rejuvenating shot like this - then I'll sing Kate Bosworth's praises for the whole world to see. I'm a film buff, but I can recognise good style when I see it, too.

Let's dissect. What is so good about this simple, simple outfit? Firstly it's the colour combinations. I'm still wary of bright colours and have been sticking to injecting a bit of neon into my look with lipsticks alone (NARS schiap and red square are my favourites). But Kate shows how you can mix and match neutrals and neons to spectacular effect. The midi skirt with the slit is exactly the kind of thing I like to wear - not quite maxi, but still long, different and unique. In the bright colour it takes what is a tricky fashion item to a whole new level. But paired with the simple, slouchy sweater and those well-worn in IM boots (oh, when will you be mine!), that bright is suddenly rendered a whole lot less challenging. As long as you keep the rest relatively simple, you can let the skirt take centre stage. Sling a messenger bag across your back and add some slightly winged sunglasses. The whole thing has a touch of effortlessness that I've never really associated with Bosworth before. I mean, yes, she is undoubtedly well dressed. But a lot of the time I find what she wears contrived. I guess I need to apply myself and look for more street style. Because if it is anything like this, it might be the rejuvenating kick my wardrobe needs.

the real world

tfs, justjared, garance dore

Magazines have been proclaiming for some months now that there has been a shift in the fashion paradigm. With the stock market down and people zipping their wallets up tight tight tight, fashion has decided to take a walk on the simple side. They have pared it back - the crazy, the unattainable, the bizarre and the wild - and scrubbed it clean until you can see the bare bones of what fashion is and should be - CLOTHES. Should fashion be imaginative? Yes, by god, yes. Should we "dress up"? Yes, we bloody well should. But we're going to dress up and imagine ourselves in a way that is real and true. That is, not who we SHOULD be, but who we ARE, which is something just as exciting and fantastic as any couture collection.

"Real fashion". What does that mean? It means collections that show clothes, real clothes, that could go straight from the model to you, no matter what size or colour or creed. It means clothes that are streamlined and chic and urban. It means clothes that aren't worried about trends - even if they eventually form them. It is no wonder that the best collections were designed by women - Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, Hannah McGibbon - who seem to understand perfectly what women really want. It's not a head to toe Yetti costume in gorilla fur, but a sharp, oil-slick suit with leather pockets and a high collar you can turn up to the rain and fold down in a meeting. It's an a line skirt that skims over everything and swishes as you move. It's the perfect shirt, just loose enough, unbuttoned to there, with the sleeves bunched up at the elbows.

The come back of the shirt is a sign that real fashion is having a moment. The shirt is the epitome of "real" clothes, ones that are simple and sometimes confused with boring. It is, in fact, the building block of the wardrobe. I love shirts, they are simple, but beautiful, beautiful beautiful. They hang well on every kind of body, they accentuate curves and hide everything else. They are very, very real. They are all the same, really, despite patterns and cuffs and buttons and collars. They are just sleeves and tails. I've taken to wearing long, loose shirts over long, loose skirts, and it is something marvellous. There is nothing fussy about it. It is real fashion, for real people. like me!

you look lovely today... just today?

A long break from these posts while i've had a long break from the internet... but hollywood keeps rolling ever on, and therefore so must celebrities showcase cute little outfits, whether i'm there to pass comment on them or not. This week i am. Joy! Also happening this week - I bought a beautiful frosted pink sheer lip stick from Nars that i absolutely love. It gives just the right amount of shine vs colour. I've also been to Torquay for a well-earned beach break. Even though the weather wasn't quite beach worthy it was still enjoyable just to chill and do absolutely nothing. And, it is less than 3 weeks till my birthday! (and by default 3 weeks till christmas). Yippee!!!

Gwyneth Paltrow

Wow. I'm just going to say it since you are all thinking it - i want to look liker her when i'm 36/8 or however old she is. Look at her. Look. At. Her. I know that figure comes from years of dieting and self denial and working with Madonna's psycopathic trainer but still. Wow. She glows. Her hair is healthy. That dress hangs on her like it was never meant to be worn by anyone else. I love this peachy nude colour (see below), especially on fair skinned people. Gwyneth looks like this beautiful goddess.

Ashley Olsen

Just to preface, i do not like those shoes. Loafers are cool in an Alexa-Chung kind of way, but Ashley wears serious loafers with odd outfits. However up rom that is a truly chic, truly classic look that i actually quite like, but i am a huge fan of long skirts though. The jumper looks incredible, cosy and warm, with that dip-dyed hem. It reminds me of a dries van noten one from last season that i would kill to own. The long coat swathes around her and she looks comfortable and warm, yet still cool and chic. Ashley Olsen is the more interesting of the twins for me because of the direction her style has taken. It was clear the way she was going to go about a year ago when she started to dress more business like, throw herself into her fashion label, and declare herself finished with acting. Her style is a reflection of a mature persona she wants to show. She does look old here, but i don't think she looks dowdy. That is very interesting indeed.

Rose Byrne

Look at that hair! Wow! When her hair is all sleek and serious she looks sleek and serious, and makes her clothes look drab and boring. But when it's mussed up like that she looks like a cute, quirky woman with a fashion taste to boot. I love that she kept her hair all messy and toussled to go with this dress, which definitely requires hair with a little bit of personality. I love how monochrome her outfit is yet how fascinating the dress is, note to self, create interest in monotone outfits with details of pattern, texture and contrast. The slick of red lippy doesn't hurt, either.

Kate Bosworth

Speaking of nude dresses... This one is wild, which is a lot to say for a dress in nude. Unlike Gwyneth's sophisticated and simple elegance this dress makes a bold statement. I could see someone like Clemence Poesy or Chloe Sevigny also wearing this dress - it's fun, quirky and a little bit silly. The huge bow I actually love, i think it's a great little embellishment that adds interest to the shift dress shape. And those sequins, well, it gives this illusion of the wearer actually being much smaller (not that Kate needs that illusion) and wearing a completely other dress, one that is sequined and strapless. I actually think that's kind of playful and cute.

Keira Knightley

There are coats and there are coats and this is of the latter. I don't really care much about finding out about the rest of the outfit, the jeans look like a nice colour and those motorcycle boots are an interesting touch, it's the coat that i'm concerned with here. It's gorgeous. It looks so warm! after spending winters in New York and Paris where i shivered in coats that did NOT keep me warm I am determined that next time i go i shall be properly attired. THis coat looks perfect, leather, with a fleece lining. Wow. That would be warm indeed. I can't stop looking at it. I also love that elephant colour, so chic, a much better alternative to brown.

you look lovely today, just today?

horrible week in more ways than one. don't really have many details to go into, other than the fact that it has just been horrible. next week will be better.

Diane Kruger

If i could be any girl in the world I think i'd want to be Diane Kruger. Ah, i caught you there didn't i? You think i would say Alexa Chung with her british accent and her rockstar boyfriend. But look at her. Alexa Chung couldn't rock a velvet assymetrical jumpsuit? Diane looks like she was born to wear Chloe, and wear it she does. This outfit is immaculate, i cannot fault it, and this coming from the girl who hates jumpsuits with every fibre of my being (believing that they are, above all else, the ugliest piece of clothing in a woman's wardrobe today). But seeing Diane makes me want to search one. A velvet one no less. And to cinch it in at the waist with a carpet tassel. Such class, such sophistication. I have a feeling she's our generations Grace Kelly. And hey, Prince Harry is on the market again. Who knows. :)

Kate Bosworth

Oh Kate. Where have you been? i've missed you shiny hair and your two-tone eyes. No-one wears clothes quite like you do, as if they just sprung into being on your body. No-one accesorises like you do, with mis-matched metallic shoes and box clutch. No -one can wear a simple white sheath, knotted experimentally at the waist, with the same oomph and pizazz as you do. It takes a class act to wear something so simply so well. She may not be a great actress (but hey, i'll let her happily prove me wrong on that account) but boy the girl can dress.

Leighton Meester

I'm excited at the idea that Leighton might have a Vogue US cover. I much prefer her to the goddess-like Blake any day, her more decadent, more sinful brand of beauty is more to my tastes than Blake's bright-eyed Californian effervescence. She also has a really surprising avant-garde taste. Take this dress for instance, a simple shift made interesting by the huge floral ruffle at the collar, a little Carrie Bradshaw-esque, no? The print is darling, and the shoes are just the perfect counterpoint, picking up the belt and recalling the ruffle with the circular detail on the strap. She's canny about fashion, she has wild and crazy taste, and she knows how to accessorise. Not much more a girl can ask for!

Thandie Newton

I'm not sure if this is actually that recent, but it was posted recently on tFS, and i needed something a little casual to break up all this glorious red carpet stuff. This outfit is perfect. Thandie is a beautiful girl, so she can get away with things mere mortals can't (hello, leather leggings). But aside from that i love the principle of this outfit - mixing silhouettes, textures, colours and shapes to form an interesting, yet casual outfit. I love the way that the sheen of the leather contrasts with the hard cotton of her striped shirt and dull shine of the satin tuxedo jacket. I like the sleeves pushed up over the shirt, and the hem of the jacket hanging longer than the shirt, yet the leggings taking pride of place. And i looooove her 2.55 of course.
