never full

I can't quite remember the first time I wanted the Louis Vuitton neverfull but I do remember the first time that I shared this desire with someone. A friend at work - a fashionista through and through, she has a Celine bag and loves Isabel Marant sneakers like it's nobody's business, and I don't have many friends I can say that about - I thought she would fuel my obsession even further. Instead, she wrinkled her nose and said words to the effect that the bag was tacky. I was dismayed. I had been obsessing over it for a while now, and once you start obsessing over something you see it everywhere. It seemed like every customer at work for a month had been toting that bag, ever woman in line at Thomas Dux had her groceries flung in there so casually, ever mother at the school I coach debating at was carrying her blackberry and planner in one. I wanted it, in the biggest size, maybe even with a monogram HRY and a navy blue stripe down the middle (why not?). Tacky? Maybe just a little. It's hard to separate Louis Vuitton now from the this and the that. But I've always thought of Louis Vuitton as the glamorous purveyor of travel trunks, of French classicism and things that you keep forever and pass on to your daughters. I spent weeks convincing this friend of mine that, paired with bretons and tapered trousers, with loafers and big sweaters, with pea coats and fine jewellery, this bag would be the ultimate in chic everyday living - the kind of thing you could just throw everything in and head to the beach in a cloud of Byredo Gypsy Water. This was a grown up's bag. Well, V, what do you think? I know that Francesca Burns and me don't exactly have the same style, but you can't deny, this bag has class with a capital C.

ballet shoes

I've been wearing ballet shoes a lot recently, and re-acquainting myself with their dainty, delicate selves, after a few months of loafers, boots and sneakers. There's something really lovely about tapered pants and ballet flats - it's like Audrey Hepburn is looking down on us and smiling. It's a comfort thing - as most things I do are - but it's also about style. I love the line from ballet shoe to ankle, from ankle to pant, from pant to oversized sweater. It's a gloriously elegant line, straight and true.

Express

The next time I'm in Europe I'm going to catch trains, I'm going to catch lots of trains, and I'll just have a couple of Louis Vuitton duffel bags with me, and they'll all be full of books - books and oatmeal-coloured sweaters - and I'll lean back into those velvet chesterfield seats and drink a vodka martini, or better yet, a tall, cold glass of Maker's Mark and Apple Juice and I'll eat delicious things from gilded plates and watch the sunset from square windows and sleep in a tiny nook and wrap cashmere around me always and I'll have coffee in Munich and lunch in Brussels and dinner in Paris and oh, how wonderful it's going to be!

THE bag.

 louis vuitton

Just when I thought I was over it. Just when I thought I wouldn't think about it anymore. Just when I thought I had moved on to smaller, less pricey things - I see the new lookbook for the Sofia Coppola Louis Vuitton collection. I say lookbook but really I mean photoshoot, because there is nothing sterile or clinical about this. It is Sofia, in a variety of totally luxurious locations like the streets of paris or a garden restaurant, with those glorious bags of hers just casually hanging out. She's done them in croc this season: oh she is such a tease. Can you imagine the price tag of that bad boy? Can you imagine how much i want it? She's wearing beautiful long skirts, worn grey tee shirts and charcoal cocoon coats and I want to be her, fresh from a pregnancy and positively glowing.

Life's not fair, is it? Sofia Coppola is one of those people who is just born chic, and lives a life of being chic for the rest of her days. She doesn't even have to try. She's just ineffably cool no matter what she does. I'm dying to see her new movie, I'm dying to see this collection in person, I'm dying for one of these bags, I'm dying for that long black skirt with pockets, for that swing coat, for those christian louboutin loafers, for the cropped cigarette pants... I know it's Marc Jacobs who is at the helm of Louis Vuitton, so choosing Sofia to design a range of bags for them is a no brainer, but still, It was such a marketing move of genius to do it. Because despite all the fakes, the haze of publicity, the crazed fans, Louis Vuitton still epitomises chic. Just think of their personalised luggage - Clothing Suitcases stamped with your initials (HRY, please) and lined with a fabric/colour of your choice. Just think of that classic LV embossed leather. So who better to remind the world that really, underneath all that excessive consumption, Louis Vuitton is something of a chic powerhouse (as much as that is an oxymoron)? Sofia Coppola that's who. Because with her comes a raft of associations - indie, music, hollywood - that are not necessarily associated with Louis Vuitton, as well as an established fan base. Street Style Photographer Garance Dore, RUSSH Editor Stevie Dance, even it-girl Alexa Chung has one. For someone who was turned off Louis Vuitton after her first trip to Hong Kong, where lining the streets of Wan Chai were hawkers peddling their fake Speedies, these bags are enough to get me interested in the label again.

And if the sight of this look book is anything to go by, that ploy has worked.

doctor, doctor!

style.com

On my way home from work I grabbed Vogue Australia, ready to settle in for an hour or two of completely frivolous - but perfectly wonderful, of course - reading. What should I see, except a break down of trends that included my current favourite, the Doctor Bag. Yes, yes, I do love the PS1s and the Sofia Coppola for LV Duffel Bags of this world. But I've been carrying a satchel on and off (most notably off when I went through a 6 month "clutch only" phase) for the past 2 years. It's time to move forward. It's time to grow up. And what better to do that with than a Doctor Bag, that staple of lady-like dressing. The bag that swings from your hand or, if you want to go totally uber modern and chic, tucks in the crook of your arm like an oversized clutch.

The shape is timeless. It is boxy and bulky and not practical at all. It's the kind of bag that men of the 1950s used to like - you can't work a typewriter or a read a book if one of your hands is completely occupied with holding a bag. But so what, really? Sometimes - just sometimes mind, I still crave a  PS1, believe me - you want something a little more refined. You want a bag that requires, no, DEMANDS, that you pay it attention, that you slather it in leather conditioning creams and ensure you don't just plonk it down of any surface. A bag that makes you look delicate and dainty, yet which is made of sturdier stuff than your average suede hobo. I want a bag that is a little more... well... chic. I always dress down - I'm the girl in an oversized shirt and plain skirt at the club. But, looking at Alexa, and the Dries Van Noten collections, I think that with a bag like this you would be dressed up for anything occassion, brunch or birthdays. I think that with a bag like this you would stand up straighter, your hair would slick back, and you would be a "glamazon" for want of a better word. One of Louis Vuitton's buxom babes - Rosie, Catherine or Elle. Blessed and Bold. But still "Cool" like Alexa. The perfection combination.

I glanced at my archives and realised that pretty much every second post is about bags. Is working in the DJ's handbags department getting to me a bit? We'll see.

bag it

In fashion circles it seems like there are only three bags worth having. The first is Celine's itty bitty shoulder bag that comes with a hefty price tag. The second is Proenza Schouler's utilitarian dream boat - the PS1. And the third is Sofia Coppola for Louis Vuitton's satchel bag, part overnight-er, part chic tote, all class. It has that quintessential Sofia Coppola stamp of luxury and sophistication mixed with the french elegance of Louis Vuitton. It has a price tag well into the obscene - think $4500 US - but at the same time it has an allure that makes you consider, if you could just save up, if you could only forsake things like, ooh, a house, you could get one of these bags, and your life would be complete.

I am not a bag lady, not by any stretch of the word, but lately I've been thinking a lot about bags. Perhaps it is because I work in the handbags section of a big department store here in Australia. Or perhaps it's just that, after years of just shoving everything I need into my pockets, I've come to realise that bags really are an important part of finishing an outfit. I see girls on the street whose bags are an extension of their style, whose bags provide an interesting counterpoint to what they already wear - a woman came into work yesterday in a simple black duffle coat and a wicker basket and canvas bag by miu miu, she was a regular alexa chung. Is a bag necessary to complete an outfit? No, by any means. But it does add a little something extra. It's like in exams when they say you are not obliged to use secondary material and extra sources, but you get extra marks if you do. Your bare bones outfit is perfectly fine without a great bag, but with one, it becomes extraordinary.

Why do we love bags like Sofia Coppola's LV collaboration so much? I think it is because fashion is swinging against the extravagance and "look at me" nature of past seasons - those seasons when every LA starlet would swing a Balenciaga city from the crook of her elbow and those bags were being copied left right and centre by every chain store you can imagine. The interesting thing about the Sofia Coppola LV bags is that they are simple. Very simple. Unlike even the Celine and the PS1 bags they have really no distinctive characteristics other than their shape. They are just a bag. This makes them, by default, not interesting for copiers and fakers, who want the big ticket items like the Mulberry Alexa or the Chloe Paraty. This bag can slip under the radar so that, for those select few with the $4500 chump change, they can be something exclusive and unique. Without fakes flooding the market their value increases exponentially.

More than this, we are looking for simplicity. This can be seen in the success of designers like The Row, Joseph Altuzarra and Haider Ackerman, who take simple silhouettes and give them subtle twists - the fish-tailed evening gown, the belted kimono style over-shirt, the rope sandal - so that they are both familiar and unrecognisable at the same time. We want to revisit the heyday of our minimalism - the 90s - but we don't want to relive them. We want to infuse them without our more modern sensibilities, with our ipads and our grande cappucinos. We want a duffel bag that isn't really a duffel bag, that is lined in the softest suede, that has the two characteristic piping lines running down the middle, that slouches perfectly and moulds to the shape of the body, that can be at once both sporty and sleek. We want a bag that multi tasks - gone were the days when we had different bags for different outfits. The modern bag should be casual enough to work with jeans and yet elegant enough that when you sling it across a cocktail dress you look chic, not sloppy.

You can get all of this, I think, from the Celine bags, the Proenza Schouler PS1s, and from Sofia Coppola's LV duffel bags. All of these bags are the ones on constant rotation on Garance, The Sartorialist and Jak & Jil, and for good reason. The fashion world is enamoured. Who is to say in a few years what will happen to these bags if - like the chloe paddington, the fendi spy and the balenciaga city - they too will fade into oblivion? Who is to say what the trends will be in a few short years? People always talk about investment buys - but really things that are classic are subject to the tastes of those who compile those lists of classics. The army jacket will not always be a classic, but it is a current classic. When it comes to bags, buy it if you like it, you want it, and you'll wear it. Don't worry if, in 20 years, you think you'll never wear it again. To be honest, you probably won't wear anything you have now in 20 years.

Fashion editors are saying that this season has seen the "death" of the it bag. Well, if the street-style sites are anything to go by, the it bag is alive and well, it just has a new label.
