Nothing that could happen this fashion month could top this. Celine could come out with overalls and birkenstocks on the runway (oh wait) and it wouldn't even top this. This is everything. This is everything and more. This is my favourite Australian label working with one of the biggest antipodean brands in the business. This is classic, intuitive collaborative design. This is an accessories range for girls who love their accessories. This is a bag collection that will slot effortlessly into the lives of cool girls the world round. This is the way bags ought to look and be and feel. This is one for the ages. This is Benah for Karen Walker.

is my body too

I don't think you're ready for this jelly boiled wool! I can't even start on how this is me, from May through August (weather permitting). I even own the brown tweedy coat for crying out loud! Winter is the thing, really.

The ear is the thing. I'll be keeping it simple with BRVTVS's delicate ear cuff, but this is clearly a case of anything is more.

getting old

1 and 3 - style.com // 2 - vogue daily

I love hearing people write rude comments in the Ashley Olsen TFS thread about how she's dressing too old for her age. Those comments are like catnip for me. I love how Ashley Olsen dresses (understatement, I idolise it). I love dressing more than ten years older than my age, I love the idea of aging gracefully, I love the idea of sensible clothes, quietly elegant in their unfussiness and simplicity. That's why I love these street style looks from London and New York - Sarah Harris and Virginia Smith, two of my absolute favourite mag girls, the former for her long grey hair and the latter for that one line in The September Issue, when Anna fixes her with a withering stare in regards to that lovely accessories shoot with Daria Werbowy, "I think it's pretty" - of women who are so supremely comfortable in their skin that they wear their hair naturally grey, they run bare-faced to a fashion show with just a celine pouch for comfort, and they team a cashmere turtleneck with a fur coat and jeans. I love looks that come together with little thought at all - the clothes pulled from the drying rack and slipped into, the shoes grabbed by the laces as you run out the door. In my experience, it is those outfits that look the best. And that confidence and understanding of your personal style can only come with age.

Every fashion week I latch onto one image that, for me, sums up my current fashion mood and inspiration. Normally this moment arrives in paris - of course, of course - but I think that maybe this year New York has pipped it to the post. There is a lot of talk going on in the blogosphere - and in real life, as bloggers are want to talk about their industry as much as fashion journalists are - about the place of street style in today's world. Much has been said. Much of it has merit, and much of it smarts so much of generational discord and a slight sense of desperation. Whenever these debates crop up - and they crop up remarkably frequently, with more and more vitriole as the seasons roll past and the number of street style photographers and their willing subjects outside the tents at Lincoln Center or The Tuileries or Somerset House or any of the multitude of off-site shows grows exponentially - I am reminded by an article by Clay Shirky about the death of the newspaper. We read it in third year media studies and one idea from it has always resonated with me, has always been something that springs immediately to mind whenever the old guard of print media whip out their pistols at dawn against the new;

"Revolutions create a curious inversion of perception. In ordinary times, people who do no more than describe the world around them are seen as pragmatists, while those who imagine fabulous alternative futures are viewed as radicals. The last couple of decades haven’t been ordinary, however. Inside the papers, the pragmatists were the ones simply looking out the window and noticing that the real world increasingly resembled the unthinkable scenario. These people were treated as if they were barking mad. Meanwhile the people spinning visions of popular walled gardens and enthusiastic micropayment adoption, visions unsupported by reality, were regarded not as charlatans but saviors... That is what real revolutions are like. The old stuff gets broken faster than the new stuff is put in its place. The importance of any given experiment isn’t apparent at the moment it appears; big changes stall, small changes spread. Even the revolutionaries can’t predict what will happen." When you're living in a revolution you can't see the revolution happening, and even if you can, you don't know where it will end or what it will take with it. We just don't know. Suzy Menkes doesn't know, Leandra Medine doesn't know, and I certainly don't know.

So what does it all mean? Does it mean that Suzy wasn't right when she said that there are too many attention-seekers crowding the fashion weeks, yearning for a moment of fame in the lens of a street style photographer? Does it mean that Leandra wasn't right when she said that we are all to blame for our loss of editorial integrity? I think that it means that ultimately Clay Shirky was right. That if we are building a guttenberg press - and I don't think anyone would deny, this far down the track, with this many street style photographers and the nature of this industry, that that is indeed what we are and have always been doing here - then none of us know what the hell is going on and what the hell is going to happen. Could you have asked someone in the middle of the dot com bubble where the internet was going to go and would he have been able to answer coherently? You can ask me where street style and blogging is going to lead and I wouldn't be able to string two sentences together other than this: I have no idea. And this; just look at this picture. Because, like I have always thought, if we only get one moment like this the whole season, then it would all be worth it. All of it.

true grit

I feel like I say this every time I see a new TOME collection, but it's true. This is so good. And if my effusions have become meaningless due to their sheer size and quantity then so be it. But it's true, it really is. I think I might like this collection best of all. It reminds me of something that Mattie from True Grit might wear - once she grows up a bit and takes out those stern plaited pigtails (now there's a cinematic style waiting to be written). Thick belts, wide trousers, flared coats cut short at the back, the perfect fedora... These are things that you wear back on the ranch - something Dree Hemingway might be seen in on her own private idaho - while you slow-roast meat on a fire or cross-stitch a little somethin' somethin' in your log cabin. Then you pop on those satin trousers and that sheer blouse for when you're invited to the Governor's ball and, darn, you haven't got a stitch to wear. It's a way of dressing for winter that is so peculiarly American, equal parts Jo March (wouldn't she look great in that scarlet gown with the plisse pleating?) and Jennifer Lawrence, perfect for girls with feline looks and long, long hair (your one beauty!) and sturdy lace up boots. It's all of that -  ice-skating on frozen rivers and plaid and drinking out of jam jars - only modernised, which makes it so, so much better, because, in my world at least, there's a place for things like wide leather belts and shearling collars and low ponytails and burgundy stripe tunics (there's always a place for stripes!), even if you're not back on the ranch but you're just back at home, reading Evelyn Waugh and eating ricotta and honey on toast. I can't wait to see what My Chameleon pick up from this collection.

just jared

Just when I need it the most, inspiration strikes in the form of Ashley Olsen, resplendent in The Row and straight leg jeans. How she does it - make things that are kind of wrong, like stripey fur jackets or camouflage totes all scrunched up in the hand - seem so right I'll never know. I want to be her.

Shopbop giveaway!

I loved the Alexander Wang show this season. It was modern and urban like always, but it was also so, so sexy. It was like the Wang girl had grown up a bit, ditched her ballayaged hair and denim cut offs and headed out to a fancy dinner at The Standard in a slashed mini dress. I loved it. It actually has renewed my interest in Alexander Wang, and I went to scour the selection of Alexander Wang sweaters and bags at Shopbop. They've also got some Alexander Wang sale at Shopbop at the moment... until next March when the new collections start trickling in there's still plenty to look at.
The kind people at Shopbop have teamed up with me again to give away a $100 gift card to one of my readers! All you have to do is become a fan of Shopbop on facebook, and follow me either on Bloglovin or Google connect. Leave a comment when you've done that so I know, as well as your email address so I can contact you if you win. And let me know what you'll be spending the voucher on! I'll be drawing the prize at 8PM EST on October 28th, so you have 10 days to enter. Good luck!

shackles

Probably the biggest fashion revelation to come out of this fashion month (so far! let's not count all our eggs until Phoebe Philo scrambles them, hmmm?) has been these totally awesome ear cuffs created by one of my favourite jewellery designers Caroline Ventura of BRVTVS exclusively for the Jason Wu show. What I love most about Caroline's work is that it manages to fuse both history and modernity in equals parts. Jewellery is an excellent medium for this - one of the oldest and most sacred forms of bodily adornment that we as humans, and particularly we, as women, have, alongside tattoos. Her designs always reflect this historical tension and she always teases that out, whether it be the tongue-in-cheek product names she assigns to her pieces, or the way that her 18 carat gold items always seem to allude, in some way or another, to an ancient roman or greek legacy, albeit in modernist ways, such as the 'friendship' bracelets which spawned the name BRVTVS, or the Cleopatra necklace with its three-piece centre (Cleopatra, Caesar, and Mark Anthony, history's greatest love triangle, no?).

When I met her in New York we chatted about the new developments in jewellery design. At the time we were both enamoured of first knuckle rings and that occupied quite a bit of our gushing. But I have to say that the zeitgeist this moment seems to be leaning more towards ears. I've mused before that the ear cuff appears to be the final frontier for jewellery. There's a hardened, fiery edge to an ear cuff which off-sets any item of clothing or experimentation with makeup, but there's also a sort of cheeky, wink-in-the-eye glimmer to them, the look a child gives you as it tries on its mother's high heels. Ear cuffs are getting steadily more extravagant and more futuristic, but at their core they will always be a nod to the desire in all of us to be the badass who has their upper ear pierced while in the same breath being a reminder of the fact that we are just too chicken. I think that's what I like most about the ear cuff. It's just a tiny, insignificant little thing, but there's a real potent sense of unrealised desire in its golden touch. They're the best kind of edgy, that is, the kind you can take off at the end of the night, right before you go to sleep. I know I seem to go off on jewellery tangents all the time and I agree that sometimes it can seem a bit daunting to try and keep up with the ever growing world of bling trends (dainty jewellery! memory rings! anklets! what will she think of next!) but I can't help it. I've always been fascinated by the little things that can speak for the whole, and in one tiny piece of jewellery you can often see so much. Now, the only thing left to do, Caroline, is find out how, exactly, I can get my hands on a few of these little things!?

keep it clean

Meredith, even though every time I see a picture of you I can't quite shake the feeling that you are some Vogue-ified reincarnation of "whatever you say, mere", and your hair and tan are consistently too perfect to be normal, I still love you, because you were the first person to tell me about k.jacques, and you're the person who wears flats to fashion week, and you're the only other person who loves oatmeal as much as me, and you live out those dreams of a modern-day CBK, and you make me quite excited for those days when I'm a flats-wearing, wide-pants toting mom (so, all I need is a baby, huh?) and running around some fabulous town looking just like you.

good evening

If I had anywhere to go - I don't, but let's imagine for a second - I would want to wear something that looks just like this. Long-line silk with an even longer-line something draped over the top and a thin bit of something else to tie around the middle. All three of these looks have something rather exciting about them. The first is the colour; that dusky pink at evening time is so suggestive, but that pyjama-style cut is languid without being louche. The second it's all about that tuxedo jacket; it hints at some kind of man-style cross-dressing but a fitted skirt with a bit of a slit puts those dreams to rest. The third is actually a pantsuit, but it's more about those little tassels; what a curious, and curiously appealing touch. It's weird - The Row's customer is obviously older and obviously well-off - you'd be likely to see this on the wife of a president (if she had the figure of CBK) or at the opening of the Metropolitan Opera on the lithe body of some JP Morgan exec's wife. But I really like it. I like all of it. I like the staidness and the restrained, almost austerity-chic, and the totally unforced simplicity. But what I like most of all is the kick of subversiveness - like the 'twist' in a vodka martini - that seems to hit you only as the model is walking away. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, you've definitely done it again.

keeping cosy

I don't know how these slipped through the net but I just rediscovered these pictures that Vanessa took of me in New York. There's been this crazy cold snap in Sydney at the moment. When the sun is high in the sky it's okay, but as soon as it turns dark there is a chill in the air that you just can't quite get rid of. And - shock of all shocks - I went to Messina just now and there was no-one there. That, surely, is a sign that winter is coming. It probably won't get so cold to as necessitate shearling under tweedy woollen coats as well as cashmere scarves - not like this bitter day in New York on the fifth day of fashion week. But even looking at this picture is making me feel all warm and toasty while I sit, rugged up on my couch watching re-runs of The Voice. Excellent.

X

ps. for anyone mulling over an impulse ice cream choice - ice cream and movies about cold weather climes are the only thing you should be doing in the cold. it's completely necessary - I recommend Messina's pavlova. Pannacotta ice cream, meringue bits, strawberry coulis and passionfruit puree. Totally delicious. And better than my other favourite - salty nuts (peanut butter with salted caramel flecks).

NYFW photo diary

one. my mates Peony, Pete and Candice, ever the glamorous lot, two. the calm before the storm, three. the plaza, four. a cute girl who had come all the way from Sweden to soak up that addictive atmosphere, five. 3.1 Phillip Lim 31 hour tote bags, six. Celine, what else? seven. Karen Walker's punchy finale, eight. beautiful structured dresses at NOMIA's debut presentation, nine. the most surreal moment of the entire week. I'm never going to throw out this show list and invitation.

Nothing I write could sum up any better than this what it's really like to be at New York Fashion Week. Why do I even try? What a week. What. A. Week.

shearling beloved

Oh GOD I just love shearling so much. I love to wear my little Carly Hunter shearling vest, I love to layer it under coats and over jackets, I love to wear it on its own and just surreptitiously rub my belly during class, comforted by its soft folds. And you know what the best thing is? Shearling has actually become a classic. Once a fickle trend, now a wardrobe staple. Don't you love it when that happens? When something so simple yet so wonderful traverses that tricky canyon between a one-season-wonder and true wardrobe-staying power, which shearling has done with marvelous aplomb and, it must be said, warmth. There's nothing better to brave that icy, bone-chilling New York chill - enough to make even me, a cold-weather-phile, break down into tears of despair - than a little shearling something. A burnt ochre suede and shearling coat perhaps, or even a full blown black number with fuzzy sleeves and a boxy cut. All fashion week I've been keeping my eye out for shearling with the vague intentions of putting a post together of my favourite looks, but Tommy just shoots so much better than anyone else I can't help but use his pictures. These were some of my favourite shearling moments, but another was Candice's amazing shearling-lined coat, which kept her snug and warm with only the briefest glimpse of shearling poking out.

One of the interesting things about shearling is how both a little and a lot create a lasting impression. I love to wear my vest in all its drapey, oversized glory over sweaters and with big scarves, but I equally enjoy just the hint of it underneath another jacket. The third picture above is a perfect example of this - she's only got a tiny little shearling collar, barely even that, a little shearling puff - but it makes such a huge impact. It has me dreaming again of that shearling coat from Carly Hunter's new winter collection which Talisa and I previewed way back in October or something. I've seen a lot of those coats on the streets of New York - wool sleeves and a shearling body or vice versa - and they are so incredible in real life. With a pair of straight-leg jeans, an oatmeal-coloured tee shirt and a pair of anklets there could be no more perfect outfit. I might have to have another look at that coat when it drops in-store at The Corner Shop. Until then, I'll be satisfied with my little vest and playing with ways to layer it. Let's hear it for shearling!

X

ps. don't you just love stevie's hat? I still love hats, and there's good news on that front. All I can say now is thank god for New York.

Negarin NYFW

Some of the things that I liked about the Negarin London show during New York Fashion Week - the bright colours, the geometric prints, the belts that buckled at the back, the boxy swing coats with oversized collars in purple tweed or colour-blocked navy and blue and, of course, the hair; it's surprising how much you can say with a slick centre part and a long-as-you-like low ponytail.

Lauren Moffatt NYFW

I was never a naughty schoolgirl. Not once. Well, maybe once. But, really, I was a bit of a nerd, with a backpack bigger than my torso and a heap of books that I carted around and a blazer pocket filled with pens. But I've always kind of harboured these vague fantasies of being a bit of a naughty school girl, knee socks and all, writing lines or being sent to read in the corner as punishment. I always kind of wanted to be Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday, you know, how she's so well acquainted with the detention master that she swaps sandwiches with her and gets to share cute over-the-shoulder glances with Chad Michael Murray. The one time I was in detention I mostly just stared out the window. I'm sure if, aged 15 or 16, if I had a wardrobe of a-line skirts in mustard yellow or all-american-red-white-and-blue and stripey boatneck sweaters I would have been a little cheekier. As Lauren Moffatt's show notes explained, girls who wear peter-pan collars and knee socks are Sugar and Spice - all at the same time. When they are good they are very, very good, but when they are bad they are horrid.

I loved this collection. I loved how youthful and fresh it was. I loved the way it was presented, with the models sitting at desks idling twirling their 2B pencils and doodling in their notebooks. Of course, being me, my favourite pieces were the coats which hang from the mantlepiece - especially that gorgeous colour-blocked number with a fur hood. But the polka-dot midi skirts and the ankle boot with socks and the little silk crop tops were so cute and reminded me a lot of how some of my friends dress. It was sweet without being saccharine, which is kind of the standard way of describing something that Alexa Chung might wear, but seriously, there is an art to making something fresh without it being oppressive. Last season there was a lot of sickly sweet sugar on the runways (and were starting to see it seep onto the magazine covers now, hello Alexa and Lana!). But you can always count on winter to add a little spice to the mix.

The best thing about the show? The clothes were accessorised with beautiful BRVTVS jewellery. You all know how much I love Caroline's designs, and they looked so fantastic with the clothes (see pictures 7 and 13 above for detail shots of some BRVTVS bracelets, including the Claudia bracelet which I love so much!). Caroline is such a multi-tasker, she even appeared IN the show itself as a model. It must have felt like going back to school again - which I definitely don't want to do in a matter of weeks when uni starts again. Maybe this year I'll be naughty...

X

ps. New York shows are so well produced! I mean, come on. This was in a school and everything. And the invitation was a "Hall Pass" (oh, all my New York dreams are coming true!)
