double trouble

Lately I've been wearing a lot of double stripes. At first it was unintentional - post RAFW all my good clothes were in the wash, so I threw on a fail safe topshop maxi with big brush stroke stripes and a breton top with thinner stripes. I kind of like the effect of the two together - it's an almost optical illusion, confusing because the patterns look the same and yet are not, but comforting because all those long, horizontal lines just look so good together. It helps if your stripey top is huge and oversized and your skirt is a little more fitted. Extra points if you can get stripes of different colours and widths too. The maximum mark goes to girls who can double striped with Prada. For them, there's just no competition.

bananas

I love how sometimes some things are so crazy they just work. Take for instance, the Prada Banana skirt, seen on all the editors at the past shows, prancing through all the editorials over the past couple of months. Ever since I saw that Loren Abood, owner of my favourite store bloodorange and one of the most stylish women on the planet, had this skirt I was intrigued. She is, after all, the woman who inspires my to wear tailored pants, a Gary Bigeni tee shirt and k.jacques sandals - no bells and whistles. How would she make something so, well, bananas, work? She doesn't disappoint. At RAFW Loren paraded the banana skirt in the best way - toned down with a simple white sweater and Alexander Wang heels and delicate jewellery. The effect was incredible. Fun without being crazy, quirky without being naff, cool without being hip. Basically exactly what bloodorange is like. Why did I ever doubt it!

imagine my surprise!

Prada Fall/Winter 2010 had all the usual favourites - Lara Stone, Sigrid Agren, Iselin Steiro and Jac, as well as veteran Abbey Lee Kershaw walking for the first time, but she paled in comparison to these bombshells:

why, hello there Catherine Mcneil. It's been a while since I've seen you on a runway, but I see cheekbones are something that you just can't lose. Loving the knee socks on you, very 'son of a preacher man'. I hope this spells big things for the rest of the season (though, of course, just walking prada would be a huge thing in an of itself).

And miranda, you too! prada isn't normally your scene you little (victoria's secret) angel but i knew you had it in you after that turn at balenciaga last season. you look like a little doll with your headband and that dress is so sexy and cute all at the same time - the same could be said for you, really!

As always, Prada pulls off the best surprises. (and the collection was quite charming, too, even though everyone is griping about the 'grandma' dresses. hasn't anyone in fashion seen mad men? or a single man?). The only thing I'm upset about is that Miuccia didn't call back her girl Gemma Ward. The show was apparently about casting slightly healthier, bigger models (though, then again, Cat McNeil does look thinner than she has been earlier here), and wouldn't 'Bella' Gemma have been a perfect fit? I wait with bated breath for her return.
