cinematic style - Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain

So you know how you know who your first crush was? The one whose poster you plastered all over your walls, the one you fell asleep looking at, the one you secretly (or not so secretly) planned to marry. 'My future husband' you would say. It almost doesn't matter who it is. It could be Leo, it could be a Backstreet Boy, it could be Seth Cohen (a thousand teenage girls of the noughties sigh). Well, for me, that first crush, last crush, always crush was Jake Gyllenhaal. Oh Jake. You have no idea how bad it gets. I wish I knew how to quit you. Not even when my friends tell me that his eyes are too close together (on the weekend, while in an absolute dive bar, my oldest bud said to me 'look I'm not saying that if he took his clothes off in front of me I'd say no, but seriously, on a scale of one to cyclops he's like a 7, maybe 7.5'). Not ever. I have loved him since Donnie Darko. I saw Prince of Persia three times in the cinema. And don't even get me started on Love and Other Drugs...

I remember seeing Brokeback Mountain. I remember falling in love. I remember double denim. I remember crying so hard I thought people might ask me to leave. At the 2006 Oscars I remember wanting so bad for Brokeback to win the best picture award. I remember feeling gutted when it didn't. But there was Heath and Michelle (in that dress!) and Ang's speech and Jake being hilarious. My sixteen year old self wondered how such a beautiful, haunting, overwhelming film could miss out on the top honour. A slave to awards shows even then, I had not yet realised how political they could be. I still had stars in my eyes. I'm lucky that that first realisation didn't kill the whole enterprise. I laughed along with the rest of them at 36mafia 1, Scorsese 0. I hoped, rather than knew, Ang Lee's (and Heath's and Jake's) time would come. I remember crying like a baby when Heath died, thinking the whole time of this.

What's so good about this wardrobe? it's the cowboy thing, firstly. I've always been drawn to a good felt hat and have recently adopted double denim as my unofficial wardrobe of spring. Shearling I know well. But what I am drawn to at the moment is the whole 70s vibe. I have recently watched a few movies set in the 70s (Rush, Jobs), and god, it was a sexy era. The open shirts, the tight jeans, the big belts, the big hair.  Men looked masculine. They acted masculine too - rode horses, smoked cigarettes, punched things - but most of all they looked the part in their denim and shearling and shirts. I think the normalcy of the wardrobe in this does much to advance character development. The torment of the Ennis and Jack is only heightened by their relative anonymity. They look the part, they just can't act it. That tension between reality and fiction, the tension of living a lie, is always the major theme I take away from the film. I think the costumes express that tension so, so admirably.

toasty mach 7 billion

Same same but different. Well, just with a different scarf. Keeping warm, keeping dry and all that. I love having a shearling collar poking out from under an oversized parka jacket with elbow patches (more clothes should have elbow patches!), I love having a massive cashmere scarf that you can wrap around your neck like maybe 3 times for extra warmth (this one is the perfect shade of Olive Green Benah), I love being able to wear track pants in the day time with the cuffs rolled up with anklets and ballet flats, I love being ridiculously warm and feeling smug as I see people struggling with bags with their big coats (with pockets like these who needs bags?). Oh, and I got my hair cut. Short. Well, short-ER. I'm not sure that I love it yet, but it's growing on me. After I faffed about for ages and ages and ages I finally did it. It's a long-ish bob that's longer on one side and pretty choppy and it's just so easy. My hair feels super healthy, which it hasn't in a long time, and all of the colour has gone, which was a shock, but I'm getting more and more used to it as it goes on. Some of my friends had quite spectacular reactions - I've gone from quite long to quite short with very little warning - but I think it's good! I think?? I don't know?? ahhh.. If only all things in life were as easy as layering shearling and jackets and scarves in winter.

keeping cosy

I don't know how these slipped through the net but I just rediscovered these pictures that Vanessa took of me in New York. There's been this crazy cold snap in Sydney at the moment. When the sun is high in the sky it's okay, but as soon as it turns dark there is a chill in the air that you just can't quite get rid of. And - shock of all shocks - I went to Messina just now and there was no-one there. That, surely, is a sign that winter is coming. It probably won't get so cold to as necessitate shearling under tweedy woollen coats as well as cashmere scarves - not like this bitter day in New York on the fifth day of fashion week. But even looking at this picture is making me feel all warm and toasty while I sit, rugged up on my couch watching re-runs of The Voice. Excellent.

X

ps. for anyone mulling over an impulse ice cream choice - ice cream and movies about cold weather climes are the only thing you should be doing in the cold. it's completely necessary - I recommend Messina's pavlova. Pannacotta ice cream, meringue bits, strawberry coulis and passionfruit puree. Totally delicious. And better than my other favourite - salty nuts (peanut butter with salted caramel flecks).

sneak peek: hunting

A brief, cursory glance over this blog and it's pretty clear that I am hopelessly, desperately in love with my Carly Hunter shearling vest. I wore it all last year. Almost every day. I spent most of last year rubbing my belly because this vest is so beautiful and soft. My friend has the sweatshirt from last season with the shearling patches and me and her used to sit in tutes, rubbing our bellies and not paying attention to anything. Oh. I miss third year. Anyway Carly Hunter is back and so are the vests - they've just dropped into the Corner Shop along with the shearling coat I cooed over at Under The Wing. They're pretty amazing, and what's even better is that Carly herself gave me five minutes of her time to answer a couple of questions about inspirations, autumn and how fantastic shearling is.

Check out the whole of this post over on The Corner Shop blog.

shearling beloved

Oh GOD I just love shearling so much. I love to wear my little Carly Hunter shearling vest, I love to layer it under coats and over jackets, I love to wear it on its own and just surreptitiously rub my belly during class, comforted by its soft folds. And you know what the best thing is? Shearling has actually become a classic. Once a fickle trend, now a wardrobe staple. Don't you love it when that happens? When something so simple yet so wonderful traverses that tricky canyon between a one-season-wonder and true wardrobe-staying power, which shearling has done with marvelous aplomb and, it must be said, warmth. There's nothing better to brave that icy, bone-chilling New York chill - enough to make even me, a cold-weather-phile, break down into tears of despair - than a little shearling something. A burnt ochre suede and shearling coat perhaps, or even a full blown black number with fuzzy sleeves and a boxy cut. All fashion week I've been keeping my eye out for shearling with the vague intentions of putting a post together of my favourite looks, but Tommy just shoots so much better than anyone else I can't help but use his pictures. These were some of my favourite shearling moments, but another was Candice's amazing shearling-lined coat, which kept her snug and warm with only the briefest glimpse of shearling poking out.

One of the interesting things about shearling is how both a little and a lot create a lasting impression. I love to wear my vest in all its drapey, oversized glory over sweaters and with big scarves, but I equally enjoy just the hint of it underneath another jacket. The third picture above is a perfect example of this - she's only got a tiny little shearling collar, barely even that, a little shearling puff - but it makes such a huge impact. It has me dreaming again of that shearling coat from Carly Hunter's new winter collection which Talisa and I previewed way back in October or something. I've seen a lot of those coats on the streets of New York - wool sleeves and a shearling body or vice versa - and they are so incredible in real life. With a pair of straight-leg jeans, an oatmeal-coloured tee shirt and a pair of anklets there could be no more perfect outfit. I might have to have another look at that coat when it drops in-store at The Corner Shop. Until then, I'll be satisfied with my little vest and playing with ways to layer it. Let's hear it for shearling!

X

ps. don't you just love stevie's hat? I still love hats, and there's good news on that front. All I can say now is thank god for New York.

toasty, mach 3

So I'm doing this. Again. For the second time... you know what I mean. I took a nice woolen Isabel coat, and then I added my Carly Hunter shearling vest and my Benah cashmere scarf that's longer than a metre ruler (always the stock standard WOAH measurement when you were a kid with vegemite teeth and bruised elbows and you wanted to impress, not much has changed, eh?) and I'm all wrapped up and ready to go. I think this is my favourite of all the toasty variations, but it's definitely too warm for Sydney weather (unless we have a cold snap this winter, fingers crossed please please PLEASE!). This is a dress rehearsal for New York, where I fear sub-zero temperatures are going to force the shearling layer out almost every day. Hey, I'm not complaining. I love the cold, remember? And I love the shearling (happy Austraya day, didn't you know we antipodeans love our sheep?). Another thing I love? The bay window in my hotel room. When I'm not at my grandparents I've been sitting on it and reading, drinking green tea and watching that Hong Kong bustle go by. It's nice.

chilly

GOD how excited am I to dress like this in a mere 6 days! In 6 days I'll be able to get out my ankle boots and woollen coats, my shearling vest and oversized parkas, my cashmere scarves and knitted gloves, my cosy sweaters and thick jeans, my long sleeve shirts and warm toppers. GOD how excited am I to be in New York? Seriously if I don't stop thinking about it, and about wearing winter clothes, and about being cold, and about drinking so much coffee, and eating so many steaming bowls of soups, I think I'm going to explode.

late night outfits

This outfit occurred to me right before I closed my eyes and fell asleep the other night. I was musing on this Isabel shirt, which is quite oversized and drapey but runs the risk of looking a bit farm-y when left to its own devices. How could I jazz up my simple shirt-and-skirt outfit formula? Why, add a vest, of course! And not just any vest (well, it actually should read "only vest" since I don't own any others), but my Carly Hunter shearling vest! It's a bit farm-y too, in the best kind of way, and since Isabel has a thing for shearling it seemed kind of perfect. Flat sandals and my favourite delicate jewellery pieces completed the outfit. All Saturday I wore it and I loved myself - what a perfect combination! How have I NEVER done this before? Is this how Archimedes felt, leaping out of the bath and realising that water displaces volume in direct relation to the objects submerged in it? Is this my Eureka moment???

grey

It's a teensy, tiny, little sliver of a bit cold today, so naturally out comes the shearling and a big smile on my face. I would love to be living in Paris right now, drinking coffee in a cosy sweater and an oversized shearling vest, in a beautiful apartment with timber floors and high, white walls. But hey, you can't have everything in life. It's enough to get to wear my favourite, favourite winter clothes every now and then in the hot months when it turns grey. That is truly one of life's great pleasures, no?

X

ps. I compiled a list of my top ten things that I love this November for one of my favourite Australian brands, Benah. It's over on their blog if you want to have a little geez. Some of them you must be sick of hearing about already (serge lutens, anklets, brvtvs), but I've got room 10, guilty pleasures, aesop and mymu espadrilles on there too. Check it out!

today

Same same but different. I had kind of forgotten how great this Carly Hunter vest is, tucking it away behind coats and all. I got it out in all its glory today and it was definitely fun. I paired it with an APC breton I bought in Paris in June and have never worn - I don't know why - maybe because it's black/white and not navy/white as I originally thought when I purchased it. Anyway it looked fantastic with the black lining of the vest and my black Maille skirt. I added my matching Benah kodi cuffs for a little bit of colour. This vest is so perfect with a long sleeved shirt underneath it. I'm not sure what it is about tee-shirts - or maybe just my ones, which tend towards the oversized variety - they kind of bunch up under the armholes. But long sleeve shirts have enough fabric around the sleeve to work. This is probably my favourite transitional outfit, so easy, yet really fun. Everyone always loves the shearling and compliments me on it - I think next season Carly Hunter is going to have a rush of orders for the vest  (I know I had a real hunt to get my hands on one last season).

X

ps my hair is getting ridiculously long (I only have the front strands down in this pic, the main bulk of it goes way past my waist!). Any sydney recommendations for a good reasonably priced hair dresser would be welcomed!

under the wing

pics 1-2 me, the rest - talisa via badlands

EDIT! Talisa's pictures are up!

We went to Under the Wing today and my goodness. It's going to be a good winter. Wine colour Dress Up turtlenecks, drapey Secret Squirel jackets, oatmeal and denim at Thursday Sunday and, of course, Carly Hunter shearling. With my eyes already on some Amy Kaehne goodness, and the beautiful two-tone sweater from Thursday Sunday. I tried it on today at Under the Wing - it's beautiful. Boxy and oversized and comfy as hell. I also love the shapes of their linen tops and pants. Very Stella Mac, no? The colours of the new Dress Up collection are great, all burnt and rusty, perfect jewel tones for winter. I love the 70s turtlenecks and the wide legged pants. There was also plenty of corduroy, which is the way to my heart (not pictured). Secret Squirrel is also looking amzing for next season. It's a very drapey, fluid line, which you don't often find in winter, but it sit really well in icy colours like ivory, blush and a very cool blue. These were paired with separates in navys and charcoal blacks. I especially liked all the drapey collared pieces - they came in shirts and dresses. And then. Oh! This coat from Carly Hunter. Wool sleeves and a shearling body with an oversized collar. Just like my vest, just like it. I'm so glad shearling has stuck around. It's the best thing for winter, ever. You can look very superior swanning around town in shearling, cozy and rugged up. They're also doing a black version of my vest, which Talisa had her eye on, and it's definitely nice, a real glamorous, cozy piece perfect for winter. But oh this jacket! It's already in my sights for next season. Just another thing to add to the list!

supersize me

Vogue UK September 2011
Paul Weatherall Taylor, Miranda Almond, Karmen Pedaru

The beauty of Miranda Almond's styling is how she takes an abstract fashion idea and translates it onto the streets. She leaves the theatrics to Kate Phelan and the drama to Lucinda Chambers and focusses on shoots that consistently, consistently make me reaching for the scissors so I can plaster them on my wardrobe inspiration board. Everything she styles has a wearability factor, despite their foundations in high fashion. This shoot is no different. Almond takes as her point of reference the oversized styles that frequented runways last season from Stella McCartney to Celine. But she treats it in a realistic, real-girl kind of way, rather than a comical way. Especially with the propensity to satiric juxtaposition when you pair oversized clothing with undersized models. But I loved this shoot. Supersized clothing has never looked this good or appealing. A hard trend to wear - take it from someone who knows - Almond shows us to play with proportion with a smile on your face. Pair an all-encompassing blanket-coat with form-fitting cigarette pants. She invites us to vary things up with new textures like shearling and fisherman stitch knitwear. But most of all she makes us want to try. A good stylist creates pictures that you love. A great stylist creates pictures that you love to wear. Miranda Almond is a great stylist.
