city girl

When I think of New York I think of her. The friend who becomes family, the family who becomes friends. I think of being young and cold and really young. Of doing the stupid things you do when you're a teenager. Of sitting together on her fire-escape and dreaming big, wholesome, happy dreams while snow fell around us. Of eating Van Leeuwen ice cream by the barrel-load. Of catching the F train everywhere. Of no worries. Of tuna melts and pizza slices. Of getting lost, and she a local! Of laughing in drugstore aisles and wholefoods and her hallway and the corner of court and pacific. Of sweating the small stuff. Of apricot jam and camembert. Of reading lying on the floor, propped up on elbows. Of being so very, very young. Of feeling like it was all our playground, like it belonged to us, no, of knowing that it did. I wonder if we achieve our plan of living together in New York after university/college is over whether it will feel the same. I wonder whether you can really truly love a city like you do when you see it for the first time through the eyes of your best friend.

Express

The next time I'm in Europe I'm going to catch trains, I'm going to catch lots of trains, and I'll just have a couple of Louis Vuitton duffel bags with me, and they'll all be full of books - books and oatmeal-coloured sweaters - and I'll lean back into those velvet chesterfield seats and drink a vodka martini, or better yet, a tall, cold glass of Maker's Mark and Apple Juice and I'll eat delicious things from gilded plates and watch the sunset from square windows and sleep in a tiny nook and wrap cashmere around me always and I'll have coffee in Munich and lunch in Brussels and dinner in Paris and oh, how wonderful it's going to be!

mine, mine, mine

I've said before how exciting it is to see someone wearing something that you own. We're all guilty of rushing out to buy something because we've seen an idol wear it - would I love my minty wang as much as I do had Stevie not worn it so damn well? It's the irrational part of you that immediately believes that with this coat/skirt/bag/hat you will look just like them. Just as chic, as turned out, as tucked in, as fantastic. Even better than that feeling, though, is when you see someone wearing something that you already own. Because you didn't buy it because you saw them wearing it. You bought it because you loved it - so whatever it is about them that makes them so chic/turned out/tucked in/fantastic must be, even if only a tiny, little bit, a part of you too. When I saw this picture of Karen Walker's Celine bag on the Selby today I couldn't help but let a huge smile cross my face. This is one of my favourite bags - and even though mine has a canvas pocket and red leather, I think it is just as wonderful. It makes every outfit so chic, and is the perfect accessory to a simple look. I'm so glad that I bought it and that I stuck to my guns. Someone else wanted it, and my friend practically fought her to get it. It's delicate yet practical and totally me. Seeing this picture makes me so happy and reminds me that, despite everything, despite all the talk about the nihilism of shopping, the perfect, perfect purchase is quite often the most heart-warming thing.

something is not quite right

the selby feeds that part of my soul that doesn't spend all my lunch money on vogue and doesn't get all giddy at the thought of the new season christopher kane for versus fash. it makes me realise that, just like in life, sometimes the best apartments (and people, of course), are those where something is not quite right. Where the bed is as big as the room, the picture frames are left tantalising empty, and the shelves are filled with headless dolls. Who wants to be perfect all the time, anyway?
