it's a madcap world

The magical thing about Grace's work is the sense of fashion whimsy within her pictures. Although I do appreciate hard, harsh, powerful editorials filled with gareth pugh and rick owens there is only so much of that you can take. Of course, there's only so much whimsy you can take too, but sandwiched in between 'sharp suits' and thigh high boots Grace's light touch and unfocussed pictures are like a hazy, oh so charming breath of fresh air.

Issue: Vogue US February 2009
Photographer: Steven Meisel
Stylist: Grace Coddington
Models: Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss, Anna Jagodzinska, Victoriya Sasonkinya, Liya Kebede, Natasha Poly

So it may seem like she has a definitive style, and her pictures do resemble that kind of romance that she adores in fashion, but if you look at her studio editorials she can still capture the essence of sartorial whimsy, despite the studio setting, the drab grey background, the ubiquitous jumping...

And just as an aside - how incredible is the shot victoriya, liya and natasha... not only is there such intensity in their gazes and poses, but the combinations of calico canvas, the smorgasbord of different purples, the sock and sandals, the house falling apart behind them. Reminds me of the lanvin SS 09 ads with the extravagance of lanvin bejewelled accesories atop a threadbare couch. Such contrast! It's so tongue in chic. (see what i did there? ha).
