don't get shirty

There is a book on my shelves that, in all honesty, i would really have loved to have written. It is basically a history of the 10 classic items in a woman's wardrobe - jeans, blazer, little black dress, heels, trench coat etc ... and a white shirt. The white shirt is something that I have never really appreciated, at least, not until now. As a teenager I thought collared shirts were the height of demode, something reserved for school uniforms and fathers. There was a brief period when all i wore was leggings and my dad's shirts, but in this asymmetrical, half unbuttoned way hinting at suggestive things I didn't really quite understand. I'd just seen Alfie, and i couldn't get Sienna Miller, in Jude Law's paint-splattered brooks brothers shirt out of my head. Anyway, after that brief interlude, it was a no collar zone, a period of my life filled with tee shirts and cowl necks.

But now, since I have to keep a decent job in order to save a little money, collared shirts have become my best friend. And, in their own way, have worked themselves into my heart (and wardrobe). I've come to see both a practical, and beautiful side to them. When tailored correctly these shirts can be a dream to wear - my favourite is the slightly oversized boyfriend shirt, but not actually stolen from your boyfriend of course, because it wouldn't fit correctly. The best shirt has curved seems that fit to the natural curves of the feminine form, they skim over the lines of the body and create a uniquely androgynous, entirely sexy piece of clothing.

Monday

azzedine alaia jacket, kiki de montparnasse shirt, clu trousers, burberry prorsum sandals, erickson beamon earrings.

Monday morning feels so bad... you're humming the easybeats in your head as you walk to work on Monday, your hair scraped back in a quick chignon and a pair of colourful earrings jangling from your ears. It's your only concession to colour in this monochrome outfit, an interesting suit with ruffled collar and drapey pants and a boyfriend shirt that fits you like a dream. Boxy, but not boring. And oh so sexy with the right amounts of button undone. You leave the shirt half un-tucked and the sleeves of this jacket scrunched up past your elbows. Your sandals are platform and easy to clomp around in, running from office to office appointment to appointment, and a lunch with friends in between. You're all business like in your white shirt, even if you had a milkshake with your lunch. That collar, it's fooling everybody.

Tuesday

osman muyasef coat, kiki de montparnasse shirt, lanvin necklace, balenciaga bag, derek lam skirt, jimmy choo heels.

ooooh shiny. This skirt is so shiny. It's all you could see this morning when you surveyed your wardrobe. Black, black, black, red, black, black, GOLD. mmmmm. You pair it with a boxy coat that hangs from the sternum and drapes down, a classic balenciaga bag, a pair of jimmy choo stiletto heels that lace up around your legs like snakes and a huge costume jewelry necklace. But nothing is as wild as your glittery, spangly skirt when paired with a classic white shirt. You feel like some kind of 80s texan oil heiress, powerful and sexy with her over the top extravagance and business-like strength. Power and sex, all in a stiff collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up. The 80s is back, big time, but you eschew the bold shoulders and platform heels in favour of capturing the mood, this idea of glittery excess so encapsulated by this spangly skirt. Bang on trend. And oh so cool!

Wednesday

Elizabeth and James Coat, Kiki de Montparnasse, Brian Atwood shoes, fendi skirt, alexander wang cuff, balenciaga cuff, anya hindmarch clutch.

You feel so fashion today. You're off to a party for your magazine, and you're not complaining (free champagne and a bevy of hot waiters), but you do feel a little odd with this crazy fringed and plaited skirt and architectural cuffs. You've got a pair of fabulous, utterly fabulous shoes, but they're purple suede and with elasticated inserts and with the drapey jacket with cotton arms it's all a bit much. Until you add a white collared shirt, serious, business like, and very very chic. Suddenly everything that seemed a little OTT before is now french and fantastic. Even that crazy plaited skirt. Bring on the champagne!

Thursday

Maxmara coat, Kiki de Montparnasse shirt, tom ford sunglasses, current/elliot jeans, chloe bag, balmain boots, american eagle belt.

You're having brunch with your girlfriends and everything is going swimmingly. Poached eggs on toast, tumblers of freshly squeezed orange juice and chai lattes all round. And you're in the perfect outfit too, slouchy boyfriend jeans with a slouchy boyfriend shirt, a batwing hemmed coat that kicks out like a vampire's cape as you walk. And you've got the balmain boots on your feet. Oh yeah. You don't know exactly what twist of fate led to this, but it had something to do with the colette online store and your credit card and... oh... not so much of a twist of fate at all. Just you're average monday afternoon lunch time shopping binge. Drat. Oh well they look so good on your feet at the restaurant, what with its sandstone floors and wide windows with light flooding in. You'll be eating baked beans for weeks following this purchase (not including this brunch of course), but hey, they're worth it.

Friday

Burberry prorsum coat, kiki de montparnasse shirt, chanel bag, chloe skirt, see by chloe boots, errickson beamon earrings.

Oh Friday. It's so beautiful you could just wear flats. And you do. Studded ones, of course. With a beautiful velvet drapey skirt with a tassel tie belt, a pair of glamorous, chandelier earrings, a beautiful organza evening coat (worn in the day because it's too beautiful not to see in the sunshine)... and a white shirt. It's so classic and chic, with a twist, just like the rest of this outfit. The coat uses multi layers of organza to create depth to the coat, the bag is that perfect chanel 2.55 shape but in a gorgeous mustard colour, the skirt is a tulip shape that should be a staple in every girl's wardrobe, but in a feminine, ultra sexy velvet. And those earrings top it all off like the proverbial cherry. You could almost jump with joy at the prospect of a party filled weekend. And, in those cushioned platform boots, you do.
