For some reason, white-tiled walls and tin chairs remind me of New York. Maybe because a lot of the places in my old neighbourhood there have that kind of decor, but there you go. It's something random and incongruous that takes me back instantly to Brooklyn - like Joan's peaches or Proust's madeleines. The combination of that with the mirror menus and the bottles of wine lining each wall lends La Favorite, a bistro/bar in the bottom of the Marais a truly cosmopolitan feel. It really feels like somewhere from New York that has been picked up and placed in Paris - those coke bottles! those burgers! - but then you take another look and you see the subtleties that remind you this place is Parisian through and through (the meat is rare in the middle, the sauce has cornichons in it, the bathroom is unisex). Apparently they do a stand up brunch on the weekends, but we stumbled in late in the afternoon for lunch (we did have breakfast at 11 if that helps at all) and got burgers so delicious it was hard to get a photo in first. They were good, very good, though my favourite burger in Paris is still the chicken burger with avocado and onion from Cafe Charlot. But this one was pretty good, pretty damn good indeed. Pass the ketchup!
