The Great Gatsby Giveaway

Wasn't The Great Gatsby beautiful? I mean, wasn't it really, really beautiful? The production, the costumes, the make up, the jewellery. Rewatching it now, a few months after I first saw it on the big screen, I am struck by how truly spectacular it really is. It's such a perfect metaphor for the story's central message. Beauty is promise. But it is also ephemeral. It's growing up, it's getting old, it's the discarded party favours and crushed flowers that Gatsby treads on after the party... I really liked this film. And thanks to the lovely people at Village Roadshow I have 5 copies of the DVD to give away to readers of Capture the Castle! To enter, please leave a comment on this post with a link to your favourite image from The Great Gatsby. I shared a few of my own to get you started - Daisy and Jordan on that pristine, perfect lounge, Daisy surrounded by flowers at the afternoon tea, Daisy covered in rumpled silk shirts. Daisy, daisy, daisy. I really couldn't take my eyes off Carey in this movie. So, to win a copy, just leave a comment with a link to your favourite image and an email address so I can get in touch with you if you win, and I'll pick 5 winners in exactly a week's time on Thursday, October 3. It's that easy! Unfortunately this giveaway is only open to Australian residents. I can't wait to see your favourite pictures!

cannes cannes cannes

zimbio // grazia uk // le fur coat

There are possibly only two reasons for the fact that I am one of the world's most hopelessly devoted film buffs. Firstly, my mum's Vanity Fair subscription, which kept my elbows-deep in Hollywood drama from the ages of twelve to sixteen. And secondly, the Cannes Film Festival. Teen Vogue used to cover it in the breathless way that only Teen Vogue can ("Kirsten Dunst, her honey locks back to strawberry as she films the latest installment of Spiderman, was every-inch the Sofia Coppola heroine in a backless pistachio satin sheath dress at the premiere of Marie Antoinette!"), and for a teenager that's pretty powerful stuff. There was always a cinderella moment, a belle of the ball (Diane Kruger in that mercury dress!), a class clown, a European up-and-comer (Cannes is, after all, where the world first met Brigitte Bardot) and the hangers on in haute couture. There's something about the excess and the elegance of throwing together world-famous stars and world-famous supermodels and world-famous beautiful people in one gloriously naff Riviera setting and pressing play. You never know what's going to happen. All you know is that the men have to be in tuxedos, even the paparazzi. My life dream is to go to Cannes one day. Until then, well, this year's festival starts today.

enough carey already

Yes, more Carey for Vogue US. But this is just too, too lovely not to post, after this i promise it's the end, though. On friday, look away from the camera, and relax. I like that in the background of this shoot you can see the backdrops, the poles, the rope and the lighting frames. It's like the artifice is all stripped away back to the bare bones of the clothes - even though it's haute couture, it is still real. So, turn away from the line of sight this weekend and relax. I know I will. This weekend it's going to be all about you - and your clothes, of course.

TGIF!

isn't she lovely

Vogue US being what it is for them to put even someone with a glimmer of freshness on their cover is cause for celebration. This year Anna has more than met the challenge - we've oohed and aahed over Rachel Macadams, Marion Cotillard and Tina Fey as virgin cover stars for this magazine powerhouse. But the october cover featuring Carey Mulligan really takes the cake. She's fresh in a way that is startling - not many people know about her in America (despite the oscar nomination and the shia laboeuf's girlfriend thing she's still relatively under the radar), so Vogue can do this kind of editorial, couture in the marshlands, and write this kind of story, "a star is born", without any preconceptions about her coming into it. For the vast majority of the American public it is this story that will introduce them to Carey Mulligan, and that gives Vogue US power.

What I really love about this is how soft it is. It reminds me of Marion's editorial in that way. It's not pin-sharp (like the Gwyneth Paltrow cover and editorial, harsh and severely lit), it's romantic, slow, slightly blurry, and perfectly fitting that lazy, hazy spring afternoon feeling. I love the styling: i like how Carey can be standing in gorgeous couture with a bit of a smirk on her face, or how she can pull off a glorious fire-engine red couture jacket with a pink satin bow, a wide brim hat and her hands shoved deep in her pockets. I just love the way that this editorial actually tells the story, it hints at what is to come in the interview: bright young thing gets shoved into the world of hollywood glamour and glitz but still maintains her quirks and personality.

And, you know, I don't mind that they've gone for a generic covershot over some of the more remarkable editorial ones (that black and white shot, for instance, is superb), because once again, Vogue US entices you in. "Carey Mulligan A Dazzling New Star". Well, in sparkling chanel couture she certainly looks like one.

some people just have it

some people just have it... you know, that certain je ne sais quoi that gives them the shine, the pizazz, the inability to look away. Carey Mulligan is awkward in front of the camera, but so natural, and so captivating. You really can't look away. One of my best friends is like that - you just can't take your eyes off her, rain hail or shine. a very enviable quality to have in a girl, i think.

new kid on the block

I have a new style crush - Carey Mulligan.

I moved past all my insecurities re - her going out with my future husband Shia LaBoeuf and re - her being generally teeny tiny, with beautiful pixie crop hair and that certain je ne sais quoi that makes us all think of Audrey Hepburn or Michelle Williams... And now I love her. Wholeheartedly.

I think she's stunning. She's definitely not conventionally beautiful, or even striking. I would say that her features together are actually just slightly pretty. But there's something in her eyes, and something about the way she stares down a barrel of a camera... She is not to be ignored. I thought i could, but then I saw and education and fell in love with her quirky insouciance and stubborn independence. And then I saw all the beautiful clothes she's been wearing, and realised that she actually has a style very similar to Fabulous Future Me. Which means, of course, that she actually has a style that is in some ways very similar to me, except with better shoes and more designer labels. She represents that style side of me that loves to dress oh so french and oh so chic, not hipster or it-girl like the Chungster.

And she really does remind me an awful lot of Audrey Hepburn. If not in looks then in grace. Don't you think?
