Vogue US being what it is for them to put even someone with a glimmer of freshness on their cover is cause for celebration. This year Anna has more than met the challenge - we've oohed and aahed over Rachel Macadams, Marion Cotillard and Tina Fey as virgin cover stars for this magazine powerhouse. But the october cover featuring Carey Mulligan really takes the cake. She's fresh in a way that is startling - not many people know about her in America (despite the oscar nomination and the shia laboeuf's girlfriend thing she's still relatively under the radar), so Vogue can do this kind of editorial, couture in the marshlands, and write this kind of story, "a star is born", without any preconceptions about her coming into it. For the vast majority of the American public it is this story that will introduce them to Carey Mulligan, and that gives Vogue US power.
What I really love about this is how soft it is. It reminds me of Marion's editorial in that way. It's not pin-sharp (like the Gwyneth Paltrow cover and editorial, harsh and severely lit), it's romantic, slow, slightly blurry, and perfectly fitting that lazy, hazy spring afternoon feeling. I love the styling: i like how Carey can be standing in gorgeous couture with a bit of a smirk on her face, or how she can pull off a glorious fire-engine red couture jacket with a pink satin bow, a wide brim hat and her hands shoved deep in her pockets. I just love the way that this editorial actually tells the story, it hints at what is to come in the interview: bright young thing gets shoved into the world of hollywood glamour and glitz but still maintains her quirks and personality.
And, you know, I don't mind that they've gone for a generic covershot over some of the more remarkable editorial ones (that black and white shot, for instance, is superb), because once again, Vogue US entices you in. "Carey Mulligan A Dazzling New Star". Well, in sparkling chanel couture she certainly looks like one.
