team nigella

I'm so team nigella it's not even funny. If we can forgive Kate Moss for years of drug use I'm not sure what's stopping us from doing the same for Nigella. Maybe because she's up on a pedestal, and we take some of perverted pleasure in watching heroes - but in particular, heroines - fall. But we have to remember, it was us that put her up there. Us that made her the Domestic Goddess par excellence. She gave us the term, but we applied it to her, she who from the start just wanted women not to be afraid of the kitchen, not to be afraid of being domestic, not to label ourselves or let ourselves be labelled un-feminist because we enjoyed such a simple, traditional thing as cooking. There are so many women who owe their love of food and cooking to Nigella, but I just want to talk about one - me. It was to Nigella that I turned when I made my first home-baked birthday cake all on my own. I banished my mother from the kitchen and fuddled my way through a recipe with the most deliciously written introduction I have ever seen. It was Nigella that I ripped open the wrapping paper to on Christmas, and spent whole nights with the light on low, devouring recipe after luscious, effortless recipe (linguine with pancetta and lemon oil! if only it could always be this good!) long into the night. It is Nigella that I have to credit for my greatest culinary successes; to this day I am renowned amongst my friends for Cloud Cake, a flourless chocolate torte that is so gloriously balanced it gives 'intensity, and then relief, in every bite'.

Time passed and Nigella, domestic goddess that she is, was relegated to just that. Goddess status. My mum and I found new foodie crushes, who seemed to speak to the simple, casual way we had grown to eat (nigel, hugh, sophie, I am speaking of you). We took out her books to consult recipes that we adored and those alone. But we never stopped loving her. How could we? How could I? When she taught us not to feel ashamed at sneaking a spoonful of clotted cream from the fridge at 3 in the morning, when she insisted we not be afraid to take short cuts in the kitchen, when she showed us just how much pleasure - is there a better word for nigella than that? - we could get from cooking.

As I finish writing this I can see so many Nigella books in my mum and I's groaning cookbook shelf. Without pausing to get one down and check I would be able to tell you where all my favourite recipes are (Cloud Cake, page 110 in Nigella Bites, covered in flecks of chocolate and with the page slightly ripped, not that I need the recipe anymore though, the devils on horseback from Nigella's Christmas, the one pan cherry chocolate cupcakes from domestic goddess, the easiest, simplest, BEST TASTING cupcakes I have ever had). I could even tell you the occasions we had all her food, too. Because, as she says in Feast, she makes food that celebrates life. That's why all of her books have sections for the festive season, for parties, for entertaining, for sharing. Her food is about love. It's not really about expedience, or restraint and it's certainly not about health. Just plain old love. That's worth something, in my eyes.

double up

the face // celebutopia // all the pretty birds

So... I got birkenstocks and, as predicted, haven't really taken them off. I've found them to be the easy shoes, the ones you don't have to think about, the ones you slip into last minute as you run out the door, the ones you slip off the second you get home, the ones that get you through a full day at uni (or a half day at cafe). They're a slow-burner - they're like overnight oats - but once you come around to them it becomes pretty clear you might never wear anything else.

Kate Moss by Bruce Weber
Vogue Italia October 1996

I feel like I have spent the last few weeks (including most of my Melbourne research trip!) stuck in libraries. I've always loved libraries, I've loved their stillness and quiet severity, that hushed solitude of endless shelves of books, the slow rumble of photocopy machines. But today I think I'm going a little stir crazy. I know it will be over (for now, anyway, don't even get me started on when I have to write my thesis) next week, and I'll be able to drop all my books back in the after-hours chute and celebrate by cancelling all my inter-library loans (crazy times) but right now, right now, I just want to get out. I want to sit in a movie cinema and watch something awful and eat popcorn. Help.

furry friend

Alexandra Golovanoff by The Streethearts // Camille Rowe by Models Rock // Valerie Boster by Vogue

I've always had a thing for this Isabel Marant fur coat. It's crazy! It couldn't be further from, well me than anything in the whole world, but I've always, always, always loved it. Completely inexplicably, wholly and uncontrollably without question. Which I guess is kind of the point of love, isn't it? I think there's something about how great it looks at night - remember when Kate used to wear hers on the reg, and there were blurry paparrazzi shots of her running in and out of town cars in front of Scotts, or Nobu or wherever it is she gets her sushi these days, and it just looked so fabulous, an extravagant blur of coloured wool and matted hair - and it really does cast a lasting impression. If I had one I'd wear it, bulky silhouette and all, with midnight blue jeans and an oatmeal sweater and little ballet flats. I don't think I'm ever going to get my hands on it myself, but I'll keep an eye out for a similar vintage one. But it's gotta have the same bulk, the same swagger, the same wacky colours. So wrong it's right, you know?

going to the chapel

Burberry Spring/Summer 2000 campaign, source, but I found these images (which I'd never seen before, but are AMAZING, young Kate = best kate) on Nox's blog

When I get married I'd love to have a different trench for every part of the ceremony; one for arriving at the hair and makeup, shed on the floor along with whatever comfy clothes I was wearing in order to step into my dress, one for shrugging over me as I walk to the car (this must be a cold wedding, hmm?), one for leaving at the back of the church before I walk down the aisle, one for pulling on as we head to the reception, one for wrapping around me tight as I step outside for a second, one for slipping into as I leave for the honeymoon, one to don for the plane trip somewhere exotic (and nothing else underneath). Everyone seems to be in a trench coat kind of mood, and why not? It's something about Spring that makes you want a light jacket.

wise words, testino

The Face magazine ph: Corinne Day

“You know, in life there’s perfume and there’s cologne. Cologne, you have to spray every fifteen minutes. Perfume, you put a drop and it lasts a week. You’re perfume.”

Mario Testino to Kate Moss when she was 16, quoted in Vogue US September 2011

Kate Moss is certainly Perfume. I hope I'm perfume too.

diving for hearts

London in Love from Vogue Italia March 2010 "Chapter 8"
Ph: Bruce Weber
Models: Tom Daley and Kate Moss

Admit it, the teenager in you kind of has a crush on Tom Daley. I know I did, way back when, (and I'm not going to lie, I still kind of do). I mean, look at him! What a golden boy. That's why this editorial, even though it's just a 4 page spread, is kind of fantastic. Because there is no-one else quite like Bruce Weber to capture young, athletic beauty in that golden-glow way. Weber understands well that very A.E Housman melancholy that surrounds athletes - that of "early though the laurel grows, it withers quicker than a rose". That's why his subjects are always so heavily saturated in colour, so lovingly lit, adonises gracing the mortal world with their presence (and sporting prowess). It's tongue in chic as they splash water and Kate Moss signs a W cover (Vogue Italia doesn't mind cross-promoting), and pull their costumes down low and flash their gold medals. So - it's a little weird that fully grown Kate Moss is cavorting in costume with such a young kid. But maybe, just like the rest of the world, she has a little crush on him too.

great kate

Kate Moss "at home in the cotswolds" by Juergen Teller Self Service December 2010

Kate Moss will always be that girl. You know the one, she can talk you into trouble like none other - and swiftly talk you out of it once you get caught. She's always dressing up in her mother's clothes, cheeky grin set at high wattage. She's mischievous and simple and easily understood. Just like a child, all she wants to do is have fun. I guess I have a certain fondness for Kate because she's the model I cut my teeth on - I guess everyone my age cut their teeth on her, daria and gemma. But it's not just because she appeared in almost every Vogue UK that I bought way back when. It's because she reminds me of a child in that naive, sneaks-a-lick-of-the-cake's-icing kind of way. She just can't help herself. And we love her all the same.

lolita in disguise

French Glamour Magazine 1992
Model: Kate Moss

This editorial is so 90s in many ways. I was trying to look for photos of Kate Moss from the 90s on my computer and stumbled onto this gem instead - still one the, well, cheekiest, editorials I have ever seen. Moss was only 17 when she shot this - 17 and a real doll.

and then there was light

fashionising

Okay. So i know I learnt everything I know about modelling from Next Top Model (Smize, ladies, SMIZE goddamit), and I know I am biased towards the girl, but there is a reason why Kate Moss is the best model working today. And this is it. In every. single. shot. she is on, toes curled, lips pouting, back arched, fingers flexed. Her muscles aren't tense, she isn't cramped up, she is loose, languid and cat-like - which is just the brief for a bardot-esque swimwear shot for Vogue Paris' June July Issue (and cover) shot by Mario Sorrenti and oozing sex appeal from every (completely minimised) pore. There are some who say she's too old for modelling, that she's had her time in the sun. that her moment has passed.

Her moment hasn't passed. This is Kate Moss' world. We're just living in it.

about time!

Ah august. What else do you have to recommend yourself other than windy weather and the start of university? That's right. September Issues. Let them roll in - the good, the bad and the downright ugly - air freight them and slap a $25 price tag on them if you must. All I know is I just need to get my hands on Vogue UK ASAP. Also, for those interested, I have the Harpers Bazaar Australia with Elle McPherson and it is a bloody good issue. Ever since they snatched Georgie McCourt from Vogue Australia the value of their fashion features has sky-rocketed and this issue is no different. I revelled in front of book content that was so, so good.

And when you pair them together like this it is somewhat comforting to think that Australia is in touch with our UK older sisters. Sure - it might be Cat McNeil and Elle rather than Kate and GisELLE (Kate/Cat, anyone? anyone? oh whatever), but I think our Aussie mags have captures a lot of that fashion spirit from february and have channeled it into very worthy covers indeed.

This is what I wait all year for! Can't believe it's here already. Ah August - how do I love thee? let me count the ways.

Covetous Cover

There has been so much kate moss love in this blog it's not funny. Indeed, you're all going to think that kate moss is my ultimate idol, which isn't really true. I do think she is a great model though, when she doesn't look tired and washed-out. As evidenced by the Vogue China Dec 08 cover...

I mean, Kate has completely nailed it on not one, but 2 December covers. She was fabulous on the cover of Vogue UK, and there were those that muttered about the boringness and predictability of shulman picking her for a cover. Yes, she is always on the cover of Vogue UK. 4 times is an incredible lot, especially when some of them were not good covers at all. However if she was not given the cover of Vogue UK because she had had one too many we would never have seen her reclining in tulley swathes and sending a sultry look down the barrel of nick knight's talented camera. Wouldn't that have been a terrible start to December? I know that i'm a sucker for a beautiful cover, and i always judge books by theirs, even though you're not supposed to. Judging by Vogue UK's cover it was a 200/10.

And judging Vogue China purely by this cover, and that is because i have never bought an issue before, i think it is fabulous. A black and white cover? How stunning. Kate staring down the camera wearing what could, quite possibly, be the most fierce outfit i have ever seen in my life? How stop-me-in-my-tracks. How inspire-me-to-search-out-vogue-china-at-all-costs. And her mouth is closed. That has got to be a big plus for any picture of kate moss. The lighting is just captivating too. I love the way half her face is in shade. She looks amazing.

And it makes me want to buy this magazine. A cover is nothing if it cannot inspire the viewer... and tug at their wallets at the same time. This cover is making me wish i could speak chinese, making me wish i knew where i could buy vogue china in australia.

And furthermore it is a double cover, with Maggie Cheung on the back cover. I really like how Vogue China manages to tread the fine line between fiscal shrewdness and patriotism/supporting their nation's fashion and artistic industry. The issue features many asian models, in particular the up and comers like Emma Pei and Liu Wen. Maggie Cheung is one of China's most reknowned and talented actresses, as well as being a bonafide certified fashion plate well deserving of a vogue cover if ever a girl was. I'm glad that they made a double cover, and did it with a well-known and respected chinese actress on one side and a well-known and respected (by most) model on the other. the fact that it is kate moss is representative of the fashion tastes of chinese women... They like established international faces, like kate, daria, gemma and natalia. Perhaps not 'supers' (with the exception of kate) but rather faces they have seen hundreds of times in advertisements. The provocative and relatively modern beauty of someone like lakshmi or the stunning features of karen elson would have no resonance with a culture that is so adoring of 'icons', as they themselves have dubbed Miss Moss.

But not even counting political agendas, or patriotism, or even clever marketing, it is a beautiful cover. Visually arresting. Black and White, plus Mario Sorrenti, plus Kate and Maggie was a recipe for quiet, understated glory.

Fantastic Fashion

ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMG
i know i'm very behind the times, but zomgzomgzomgzomg.
WHEN CAN I GET MY HANDS ON VOGUE UK DECEMBER 08!!!!???

[tfs... it's a fricking fold out cover! FOLD OUT COVER! i'm hyperventilating right now]

besides the usual issues with vogue uk, like the fact that kate was on the october 2008 cover (just 1 issue ago!) and that she is just alexandra shulman's meal ticket nowadays, this is one of kate's better vogue uk covers. It doesn't hurt that it was shot by nick knight, or that she is in dior couture, which never made a girl look bad, or that the art direction is superb (hello new font and gold colours!)

maybe i like this so much because of the content. the whole issues is the 'imagination' issue, all about fantasy, dreams, and there is an ed shot by TIM WALKER! i can't even breathe or type properly right now, all i can think about is getting my little hands on this issue and molesting every page. There is re-telling of fairytales by vogue's 'favourite' young british writers, different designer's takes on the whimsical accoutrement of THE FAN!!! i am dying to see what christopher kane's fan looks like (and isnt the fan just the coolest accessory?) and famous party-goers talk about their dream dinner party.

All the stories are cute and sound interesting, the eds have so much potential, especially the tim walker/karen elson one, and i am excited to see 'unbelievable fashion' with lily donaldson and jourdan dunn. From the previews i've seen the clothes are gorgeous couture, lots of tulle and crazy shapes (hello margiela..)

I know i am biased towards vogue uk, as it is the first vogue i bought properly (it had keira knightley on the cover whom i was in love with at the time), but i do have my issues with it, as outlined in (much) earlier posts. I know you all think i'm a great writer, but i can't even string full sentences together now, i am sick with excitement, absolutely dizzy with it. I can't even... i need this now! imagination, fashion, dreams, stories..... it's like shulman went inside my head and fished out the perfect vogue issue.

I'm going to try and end this post with at least the semblance of intelligence, despite the fact all i want to do is yell ZOMGZOMGZOMG at the top of my lungs. the fantastic, imaginative, dream-like quality of fashion is the reason why i fell in love with it in the first place. My first real fashion moment was with the christian lacroix couture dress i used in the wedding dress post, its tulley folds and whimsical puffs tugging at my imagination and leading my down this lovely path bedecked with beautiful clothes and the even more beautiful dreams that they created.  Fashion is Fantasy, whether it be the luxury and extravagance of feathered couture that makes you look, but more importantly feel like a fairy princess, or the harsh elements of a leather jacket that clothes you in the folds of toughness and strength.

That was kind of what i was getting at with my last post... fashion is transformative. And how coincidental that just as i am going to post today i find this cover that exemplifies everything i was trying to say in my last post. I have never had the opportunity to try on couture, i daresay not many have, but merely by seeing this gorgeous, gorgeous dress on the cover i have this huge smile on my face that won't wear off, even though i have an exam today. I fell in love with fashion because of the fantasy it invited me to partake in. And when a magazine like vogue devotes an entire issue to the fantasy that surrounds fashion my faith in the whole concept of fashion is restored again.

For a girl who spends all her time dreaming of other things, the beautiful, the lovely, the fantastic, fashion is my poison. Much like books, at its best fashion can create a whole other world, and not just where people are outfitted in couture, velvet, lace and all things lovely, the world can be the dirty streets of paris on which models stomp down in leather pants and fur coats.

Fashion is magical. And right now i feel its spell cast upon me all over again.

covering for you

i've done some of my favourite couture shows (more to come) and i thought I would share some of my favourite magazine covers for all of you. This is one of my favourites, Kate Moss by Nick Knight. Love her or hate her, she does come up with the goods. For Vogue UK this was a very provocative cover, NO TEXT! NO NEON! NO ANNOYING PUNS! just clear and clean, a white background, an eyepopping red sequined dress and kate with a crown and septre. All hail the queen!

hmm. i just looked at the post, and it's a bit too wide for the screen. anyway, the text at the bottom says ROYAL SALUTE, and of course, at the tope the last letter missing is the E off VOGUE. :]

Wow. I have no title.

This picture came up when i was doing my rounds on the daily mail website.

Aside from the mundane, like wow Kate Moss looks good when she smiles, i like her sort crop and her cute mini dress, looks like she's having a return to form sartorial-wise, WTF is vivienne wearing, but then, that's why we love her right? she can wear a truckie cap and a garbage bag as a dress and we all think she's a goddess. Which she is, i'm just saying... there are some fashion lines that should not be crossed. Chanel did it with the cabas bag last year, and now is Viv...

The real point of this post is to say; DAMN! LOOK AT HER LEGS! she's 63 for crying out loud... Look at them! And i'm not being rude or anything, but her face has aged, but her legs haven't. I know she's probably wearing tights or something, but tights can't hide wrinkles.. Wow, is this what Madonna is trying to achieve? I sort of prefer Viv's look better, not to draw attention to her legs by wearing freakin' leotards whenever you step out of the house but rather wear a cool dress slit up the leg and hope the flashbulbs go off. Which, of course, they inevitably will. She is wearing a garbage bag after all. Nice one Viv, you've definitely worked for those legs, you deserve some praise.
