'i like to think of things nobody else notices... i hate the way nobody ever looks at the road in old movies.'
Now for a little cuteness. Inspired by my recent french exam i picked up 'Amelie' the other day, ostensibly to try and 'get my ear to remember french again' but really because it is such a lovely, lovely movie, and i could watch it over and over again without getting tired. French movies have that sort of odd, quirky quality often, a kind of uncertain-ness and bizarre-ness to their comedies that really set them apart from other movies. Amelie is a really good example of this, the story is so endearingly odd, the lead character is such a delightful quirk, and the way the other characters in the story are painted, often embodying stereotypes and yet none of them are cliches... It is a mark of a good film that the supporting characters are as lively and vibrant as the main ones.
Aside from the characters the music, costumes and setting are also just divine. The streets of montmartre are all there, and you know that Amelie is walking past sacre coeur, but the way the director has edited the shot, tweaked the lighting, played up the saturation a bit but also explored contrast, means that the landmarks that are so familiar take on a bit of an identity of their own, and become amelie's sacre coeur... Indeed the whole film look like you are seeing the world through amelie's eyes, which is just delightful, bright colours, some animation and special effect, dream sequences, thought bubbles etc. Simply adorable.
I'm sure you have all seen it, but if you haven't i really recommend it. Pure fantasy and whimsy, the glorious streets of paris, particularly montmartre, a heart-warming story of love, and characters that turn your heart and make you laugh, all at the same time. A lovely way to spend 2 hours and a bit.
A bientot! You are all just lovely. I'm so excited for tonight, i'm off to an end of school party. I may even show some photos of my fabulous fabulous friends. Until tomorrow!
