ah the golden globes, that shining beacon of hope that makes january seem bearable amidst the heat and stickiness of humid summer living. despite being tres sick, i can still settle in on the couch, press one button, and be transported into some glorious fantasy land where there is no recession, where everyone is fabulously good looking and amazingly, painfully even, glamorous, and where all the men are dapper and well turned out in suit and tie. thankyou hollywood, thankyou.
a few things to note:.
1. lots of evening dresses. i love it! cocktail length belongs at premieres and launch parties, when you're invited to the globes or the oscars you might as well make an effort with the extra foot or so of fabric, and ounces more of glamour without even batting an eyelid.
2. not a lot of colour. this is kind of sad, because a lot of these actresses look knock out in colour. Why did amy adams wear black when we all know that girl belongs in green! Anne hathaway in a lovely, but nonetheless dark and drab, dress. Girl needs to wear something bright, like red, oooh red would just look amazing with her skin tone! the lack of colour in general made me g crazy for anyone that did wear colour...
3. WTF WAS RENEE ZELLWEGER WEARING!??!? someone on tfs said it was like morticia adams after being electrocuted... all i can say is that when i saw the dress in motion i laughed so hard there were actual tears in my eyes.
4. Most people, with the exception of Renee, Blake Lively in an ill-fitting nina ricci managing to make even olivier theyskens look tacky, and miley cyrus (for god's sake get that girl away from a red carpet) looked really elegant. i think everyone's starting to learn that it is better to just look classic but fabulous instead of daring but horrible (i'm talking to you renee).
The FABULOUS:
Maggie Gyllenhaal:
The only, and i mean ONLY actress around who could wear electric blue leopard print and not look like some runaway escapee from the hard rock cafe. She looks classy and elegant whilst also maintaining that air of quirky fantastic-ness that we all love about her. She wears Lanvin SS 09 modified by Alber Elbaz.
Cameron Diaz
She consistently looks fabulous at awards shows, and has come to be one of my absolute favourites to watch out for, mainly because she is daring without being crazy and she LOVES colour, which means she doesn't blend into the background like other starlets. This beautifully draped dress in such a gorgeous shade of pink made me smile really wide, because she really is the quintessential summer babe. She's glowing for crying out loud! What a star. Cameron wore Chanel.
Kate Beckinsale
What a dress! Subtly tweaking the classic elegance of the design with that elaborate oragami style, very givenchy HC 08, neckline that seemed so soft although of course it was probably being held in place with STEEL RODS. *sigh*. She looked a million bucks, which is probably what her fred leighton RUBY EARRINGS cost. wow.. sorry did someone say something about a recession? Kate wears customised J.Mendel
Amanda Seyfried
What a cutie! i thought she was the most adorable thing in mamma mia, and here she is looking absolutely amazing in stella mccartney accesorized with lovely diamonds and ruby red lips. A lot of the actresses were working the nude pallete and bed hair, and i liked that she rocked up with an updo and stained lips. She looked stunning. Now if only she had bought Dominic Cooper.... :)
Freida Pinto
For starters, she's so gorgeous. And for seconds, she wore a really interesting dress in a stunning colour against her skin. I've always wanted to wear that shade of mustard yellow, and i'm glad that someone else went with colour in the sea of black, navy and beige that was this years globes. People have complained that she took the brooches and embellishments off the christian lacroix dress, which sort of defeats the purpose of lacroix: Which is fabulous in its extravagance. I like this dress with and without, and although the embellishments would have been stunning to see, i think the simple elegance of the cut, and the interesting additions to the bodice make this dress just fabulous on her. Freida wore Christian Lacroix HC.
The Good:
Olivia Wilde
I don't watch house, so when this gorgeous girl appeared on the tv screen in this fabulous froufy fantasy concoction i was like... she is familiar. and then i was like NOOO! it's the lesbian chick from the OC. then i did a google search, because i couldn't believe that she was at the globes without having done anything else, and that's how i found out she was in house. and then i got jealous because she gets to hang out with hugh laurie all day, and i love him so much! And then i cast my mind back to the dress, and remembered how much i loved it. she looks like a princess, the princess of meringue-ton, but a princess none the less.
Drew Barrymore
No to the hair Drew. No. I think the fug girls said it resembled being shot at high speed out of a cannon through a wind tunnel. But yes to the dress oh yes! I was wondering if anyone would be daring enough to wear JPG for Dior HC, and Drew was. I think Demi might have as well, but drew is the focus here. Isn't that pale blue just lovely on her skin? and i love the soft neckline and the look of the chiffon fabric. Reminds me of that year she wore the lovely pale purple dress to present an award with hugh grant.
Amy Adams
She's adorable, and cute, and this dress is really nice. But why didn't she wear colour? I can't wait for the oscars, because hopefully she will turn up in a repeat of last year's gorgeous emeral green stunner, like maybe in a rich blue, or a bold red, hey, i think amy adams could even work a yellow with that hair and that skin. Amy wore oscar de la renta resort 09.
The Bad: (and i mean this in a really nice way)
Blake Lively
Blake Lively is a Goddess. A FREAKING GODDESS. So what happened? For one thing, that dress is way too small. With a body like hers, i find it incredibly hard to believe that she couldn't find a dress that fits properly. For another thing, the tousled bed hair is old blake, you wear it to every event, and it's dead now. To do this dress justice you need to 1. have it in the proper size 2. wear your hair up in a chic twist, 3. pair it with some kick ass sapphire earrings and/or cuff in diamonds. Overall i was disappointed with this effort by Blake, and i know in this picture she's slouching, but still, you can see that the dress doesn't fit properly. And the saddest thing is that she is stunning, such a gorgeous gorgeous girl. Get it right for the oscars, Blake. You owe it to Olivier.
Renee Zellweger
Renee gets 2 pictures just because of how crazy she looked. There's really nothing i can say to add to this dress. I know that for the whole thing is subjective, some people like what others hate, i mean, apparently people hated cameron and drew's dresses, so it is evident that it is all personal taste.
But i am yet to find someone who likes renee's dress. And you know, that really says something in this day and age.
The Men:
1. DEAR GOD THE MEN LOOKED GOOD THIS YEAR.
2. OMG WHY CANT ALL MEN JUST WEAR SUITS EVERYDAY AND LOOK AS GOOD AS THIS?
3. sweet jesus keep me away from colin farrel before i do something bad....
4. leo: Step away from the tanning lotion... STEP AWAY.
5. Brad pitt needs to shave.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Mmmmm.... brad in a suit.... Angelina was boring. Boring and blah. She looks like she was cut from marble, but she annoys me with her smugness and her up herself ness... Boring boring boring. eugh.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyer
Colin Farrel
Bring on the oscars!
