I love COS. I love it as much as i love James Mcavoy, which is certainly saying something. I'm sitting here in a cos shirt and a long structured black skirt, letting the folds of the top drape around me and the soft jersey feels like heaven. There is something to be said for good, well-made clothes with little design quirks that are easy to wear and that make you feel good. I have too many clothes that, although i love them to death, i find hard to wear, or difficult to put outfits together. There is something inherently stylish about being able to throw an outfit together quickly and walking out the door supremely confident in yourself and your appearance. I wish i could be more like that.
The thing about COS, or Collection of Style; H&M's high-quality range of clothes, is that it is just so well done. It's everything that a lot of high-street stores have pretensions too, it's kind of like topshop unique, but far less trend-driven and more cool. If Topshop Unique was a city it would be London, and COS would be Paris or Stockholm. But then the great thing about COS is also that it creates these incredibly beautiful well made basics that would fit into any wardrobe and enhance it. Think batwing sleeve t-shirts, their signature long tunic style top with cowl neck and plenty of draping, cropped jumpers and marni-esque mini jackets with short sleeves and round collars.
They are masters of colour creating clothing confectionary with shades that remind me of sherbert, ice-cream and spring. Think cute pastels interspersed with brights, neons and some darker, richer hues. There's great tailoring, there's great draping, there's great accessories... COS is best with jerseys, cottons and denims, they work well with lighter fabrics turning them into clothes that float around you. The kind of clothes that look weird on the rack, and need a body to fill them out with fleshy loveliness.
And they're so damn flattering! Seriously! I'm not a stick thin size by any means, and because i have a large chest area unfortunately it's quite difficult for me to dress my upper half. But COS manages to keep their sizing both realistic and generous, as well as creating clothes that, in an impossible way, manage to flatter a size 6 as well as a size 16. It's incredible, really, it must be that Swedish design ability in them, i mean, Ikea is fabulous too, isn't it? I don't know how to do it, but i know that everyone has to have some COS in their life, because it makes you feel so good.
