I may not have swineflu, but i feel like i have a snoutbreak of something (har har). Want some more swine/flue related jokes? How about Hamdemic? Bacon our in rashers? Aporkalypse? Okay enough, basically my head is a little up in the clouds thanks to some wonderful cold and flu tablets, and i've been missing so much uni i feel like i might as well just drop out, and i have a wonderful night of, well, nothing stretched out before me, so i thought i would report back on the happenings of the met gala.
here are my first impressions, quote unquote and unfiltered.
Everyone was a bit orange.
and most people looked a little stupid.
Yeah, there were a few great ones, a few shining moments. A few moments that made me smile to my computer screen and restored my faith in the fashion world. But then there were a few that made my mouth drop open in shock, and lets say it, horror. But, enough from me, let's have a look at the pictures.
I think the most interesting thing about this red carpet, and the event itself really, is that it is so diverse in terms of dress. You would think that it would be long, floor sweeping glamour abound, but really the best thing about the met gala is that it celebrates individuality in the guise of a theme, which means pretty much that anyone can wear what they want. And seeing that the theme this year is the model as muse, that leaves it wide open for for interpretation. Pretty much if you came with a designer you were right, and if you didn't but were a pretty young thing, then you were also right.
I think maybe awards shows can learn a little from the way the Met Gala does things, obviously not to offer up a theme this year. (The oscars: ACTION FILM theme ahaha). But maybe just to encourage a little more individuality on the carpet and not to jump down the throats of whoever doesn't wear a full length dress. I mean, i'm guilty of it too, but i appreciate when a red carpet is more inclusive and celebratory of individuality.
THE FABULOUS!
In custom Marc Jacobs
Kate looks like a goddess, and pretty much is the only one who really followed the theme. She looks like a muse! the silver colour is a dream on her, and the turban in her hair is unique and chic. I love the train over the one shoulder sleeve of her dress, and she embodies the model as the muse here.
Ashley Olsen and Justin Bartha
It is a rare fashion moment in which i think that Ashley looks better than Mary-Kate. I am usually of the belief that her dirty, grungey, 1930s-esque styling is far better than Ashley's sleek minimalism. However here is one of the only times in which i think Ashley and MK fought, and Ashley one. This dress is divine, rather than swan her in layers which it had the potential to do, it hugs her figure ever so slightly, and the backless-ness (not shown in picture) is stunning. Her hair is perfect, that bob length is incredible with her face, and she was accompanied by a handsome dashing man (i love him in national treasure haha). One of my favourites of the night by far.
Chanel Haute Couture
She looks like she is made of clouds, and how could you not in this papery white confection! The hemine is just the right the right length to not seem too short when balanced out by the sleeves, the shoes are cute and ground the look, not making it too airy-fairy, and like usual this pair nails it.
Kate Bosworth
I'm not really a Kate Bosworth fan. I think she's pretty, i think she's got nice style, but i could never really get on her bandwagon. I dunno, i need a little something extra with my obsessions du jour. let's just say, however, this makes me change my mind a little. She looks vampy in such a gorgeous, classy way. She looks like a muse of the 40s with her victory roll curls pulled back on one side, the lacy sleeves attached to the dark gown, the red lips. Perfect!
She has a really striking face and an individual style, and she always brings it on the red carpet. In this feathery confection she looks every bit the striking, inspiration giving muse of a designer, and paired with the LBD it is a perfect combination. This picture stopped me in my tracks.
The Good
Rose Byrne
Emma Roberts
Lou Doillon with Olivier Theyskens
The Bad
Madonna
Look, i appreciate where she's going with this. Really, i do. She's being all weird, and avant-garde, and bjork-esque, look at me, i'm MADONNA. Well, we're all looking. That's for sure. She just looks like a cheap, nasty caricature of the personality that she once was.
Leighton Meester
In Marc Jacobs
I like the shoes, they're very cute. And her make up and hair is stunning, but in conjunction with the crazy print dress and even crazier print leggings, that look like they might be bejewelled, she looks like a crazy clown.
As many have said before, from the neck down she looks fab, her dress is very cool, if a little bit too much like the Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci dress that Lou wore, she looks glamorous, and she's anna's current favourite, meh, whatever. But Jessica whoever told you to get a FAKE TAN... just say no! She has such a stunning pale skin colour normally contrasted against her dark chestnut hair. I hate this trend for orange. Urgghh.
Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy
I don't really mind what Claire wore, it's a bit meh for me, but she looks pretty, whatever. My problem is with Hugh DAncy and whoever let him out the door without SHAVING THAT MONSTROSITY OFF HIS FACE! It's the Met Gala for crying out loud, make a little effort. I for one like my men clean shaven and crisp in their suits. He's got the suit part downpat, but he should make a little more effort than that. He looks like Joaquin Phoenix. Not in a good way.
Blake Lively
I actually love Blake Lively, i think she's sweet and light and bubbly and charismatic. She's also gorgeous. And this dress, this make up, and this horrible horrible fake tan is doing nothing for her at all. On the one hand she looks cheap, it's true and a bit mean, but she does. The slit up to the thigh and the neckline down to her navel is J-Lo. I like the detail of the one sleeve in sheer, it's quirky and interesting, but it would work much better if there wasn't a slit or such a low neckline, and if her hair was more of her usual tousled mane. The pulled back hair is severe, the fake tan is orange and, well, fake, and although her, ahem, assets look great, at the end of the day she's a teen star who always comes across as lovely and slightly conservative, so this look is completely at odds with her persona.
The Models
The overwhelming thing about the models is that they came with a designer, sometimes out of picture, often one who is a friend, mentor or for whom they serve as muse, which is fitting in terms of the theme of the gala. Most of the time the models come with designers anyway, but this year was really the year in which they should be accompanying their designer friends. While i think it's fine for the actresses and starlets to come, i think this year it was supposed to be the models with designers, and not them. Marion and Jessica both have enough star-power clout to come alone or with their boyfriends/husbands etc. The models, with the exception of the 1990s supers, do not. I was glad and excited to see them walking with designer friends and mentors, wearing their designs with pride and sophistication.
And not a streak of fake tan in sight!
Miranda Kerr
in Jil Sander
Demarchelier's kid and Caroline Trentini
not sure of the designer, but this is a gorgeous dress, and very muse-like. Well done jumping trentini!
