I am not a pants girl. Not at all. It's something to do with not having things around my legs - i don't really like tights or leggings for the same reason. I like to feel air on my skin, it's more free, more natural. I do delve occasionally into the odd boyfriend jean when in relaxation mode, and am dipping my toes into the track pant area (i've tried them on twice, and am still deciding whether or not to cough up the dough). The thing is, pants are so very, very easy. Far more so than a dress or a skirt. You just slip into them and zip them up.
Whilst doing a little window shopping the other day I was caught by a pair of pants. Corduroy pants. They were black and slim and so, so chic in the manner of Audrey Hepburn or Jane Birkin. Gamine and fun. I could imagine a girl on garance Dore in cords, little brogues and a big camel coat. I tried them on and they stretched across my legs like a second skin. They were cheap, very cheap. They seemed to tick all the boxed. But I didn't buy them - why not? I can't really say, it's just that I'm still deciding. I'm really not a pants girl, would these lovely things just gather dust in my wardrobe whilst I trotted out my calf length skirts and maxi dresses?
I tried to think what I would wear them with, and my parka jacket came to mind... but not much else. What's going on? Normally I can coherently form at least a couple of outfits for a potential purchase, but with these cord pants, I was stumped. The same thing happened with track pants. Perhaps I am too much of a skirt girl, perhaps it's just too difficult for me to change. I don't know!! I'd like to love pants, really I would, but it all seems so frustrating. All of my loose, languid drapy skirt outfits would look stupid with pants on the bottom. You have to have a different mindset for pants - you can't just belt a tunic over them. You need structure up top to match the structure down below. And there's a fine line between the grubby bohemian nature of cords and the scraggy, musty old nature of cords. How do you come off looking chic and not, well, passe?
