ah, the celebrity dj, fast becoming THE occupation du jour for champagne bubble girls-about-town. Alexa does it, Harley does it, Alexandra Richards does it. They spin a hip mixture of "60s motown" And "Gritty Electronica" set off with some cheesy 90s hip hop and a healthy dash of the latest indie tunes, for cred, natch. They do it in places like the Boom Boom Room of Andre Balaz's Standard Hotel, a wild space with floor to ceiling panorama views of New York City. They do it for fashion parties - for Dior, Fendi and YSL. They do it at concerts. They do it wearing the latest designer threads. Whether or not they really have any DJ talent - which begs the question, who is the artbiter of "DJ Talent" anyway, if music is subjective? - is really by the by. That they do it with style and lashings and lashings of COOL, is the material point, i think. big fashion brands and products haul them in from all four corners of the globe to DJ for them to bring a certain "cachet" to the party. Who could ever forget how, well "hip" dior blotting pads became after Harley V-N designed a packet for them after her in-house DJ stint? Or those pictures of Alexa and Kate Moss embracing over the decks at the Fendi catwalk show after party in 2009? if fashion is intrinsically linked to music, which i think it is as it is to all aspects of the arts, then the ability to "spin" tunes in the coolest possible way is merely another way that a fashion house can forge its brand. Where once there used to be perfumes, lipsticks and ad campaigns there is now front row celebs, street style photos and it-girl DJs. Such is life!
I've never really harboured any desire to become a DJ, even though friends of mine have those DJ/ipod docks that allow you to spin your own tunes straight from the ipod. But the more I hear about this trend for the it-girl cum DJ the more I ask one question. What music do they play? I'd love to have a glimpse into the playlists of girls like Valentine Fillol-Cordier, Harley Viera-Newton (why all the double-barrels, girls?) and, it goes without saying, Alexa. Any thoughts? What would you put on your it girl DJ mix? Make it fun, make it wild, make it perfect to dance to, but most of all... Make it super, super trendy.
