I feel myself reaching for these french basics time and time again nowadays. I'm not sure what it is, but i think i am finally coming to a realisation about what is fashion, and what is style, something that could fill an entire post alone, and so with great difficulty i will attempt to restrain myself to a few paragraphs. But my trench coat, striped top, pencil skirt, white tee shirt, oversized man's shirt, black fitted blazer and drapey cos stuff is getting heavy rotation at the moment.
I read this quote from John Berger about the difference between Style and Fashion, and it seems to have resonated deeply. Now is not the time to enter into that debate, suffice to say that, in my opinion, style and fashion can co-exist quite happily (my wardrobe need stand as an example of that) and that, also, a style may also be fashionable, but what is fashionable may not necessarily be stylish. The world of fashion is fickle and frivolous, that much we all know. But the world of style is infinite and boundless. All who have cultivated their own sense of style are welcome.
I like that thought. I like the idea of style being able to overpower the world of fashion one day. An invisible, but powerful force. Fashion for the magazines, but style for the streets.
