sorry sorry sorry

i have no internet at home, which is a chilling prospect let me tell you.. i'm scrimping what i can from friends, family and my trusty neighbourhood library (oh the shame). im hoping that it's coming back next week, at least it better be considering the amount of work i have to do. but for now feast your eyes on the frou-frou perfection that is:

true coral, be chic

One of my favourite sections of Vogue UK, although they don't always do it every month (but they should), is a feature where they write a list of ways to BE chic, BE frugal, BE adventurous (etc) with fashion - all accompanied by beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and various editorial pics. The features are often laughable - The '40 ways to be a frugal fashionista' one seemed geared towards those who don't need to save money at all, and i quote 'save money on pesky baggage charges and whittle down to carry-on only. try it out in Venice, if it falls, there's always Bottega Veneta around the corner.' Hmmm.

This month's feature is '23 ways to be chic', and they are all rather fabulous in their own way. They range from painting your nails chanel's particuliere mink to wearing your jacket like a cape, resting on your shoulders with the sleeves flapping about freely, something that I find truly charming on a woman. It reminds me of these 1930s sirens who lounged around with tweeds resting languidly on their backs. Another suggestion is to pair a simple tee shirt with a fishtailed evening skirt, swishing across the fl
oor. Marvelous.

I would like to add my own suggestion to achieving simplicity chic. Buy a Coral lipstick - Yves Saint Laurent's Rouge Pur or Tom Ford's True Coral are good bets - and slick it on with everything. More fresh than pinks and less stifling than reds, coral is the perfect chic-lift for the new season.

Vogue suggests you sport sleeveless trenches, parkas with couture and cropped beaded boleros with boyfriend jeans to be chic this season... i would add that you slick some coral colour on your lips too. If nothing else you can say you're referencing prada's spring/summer show. And besides, who doesn't want to be chic anyway?

all in the details

guess which collection?

tommy ton for jak and jil

i love that tommy ton takes his signature aesthetic of the detail shot from the street to the runway. Ton's eye for the detail - from a concave mirror belt to the sexually charged leather pockets on a sleek jacket to the murky colour blurrings of navy blue fur to sheeny black leather - is immaculate, just like this collection. Next season Ton will be shooting bright young things running to and fro from fashion shows clutching a little black and white pochette or popping the collar of their fuzzy fur jackets. Just you wait.

i never reviewed this collection, but you're going to get tired of it soon enough the amount of times i talk about it. i think these shots, better than the runway ones, capture that sense of sharp, almost severe utilitarianism shot through by the frisson of sexuality - something to do with all that leather, strong lines, and tight hair. And, yes, that belt just begs the statement - is there a mirror in your pants, because i can see myself in them.

track record

All these impossibly cool girls with their messy hair and perfect accessories are making me consider taking the plunge. Buying a pair of track pants. grey ones, with little drawstring waists that taper down to slim ankles. to WEAR. OUT OF THE HOUSE.

1 - sartorialist, 2 - cafe mode, 3 - vogue.it

I'm sincerely hoping that this does not turn into the infamous 'harem pant' debacle of 09 where i kidded myself into thinking harem pants could be for me. they now form a (very comfortable, it must be said) niche in my pyjama repertoire. and there they shall stay, thank god. But track pants in a grizzly grey i think, just maybe, could become a real wardrobe staple for me. Comfortable and cool, yet with that element of surprise and contrast that is undoubtedly CHIC. And, something that the harem pants don't have - they are flattering (why else would women in despair where them so frequently?).

Having said all this, I have a feeling that when I look back on my fashion when I'm older and wiser my foray into pants territory is only going to elicit an OH GOD. WHAT WAS I THINKING!? What do you think? Yay? Nay? Never? Always?

Tricky. I'll get back to you.

VAGABOND SHOES

some things i know to be true, one of these - new york is a city that never sleeps. it's been a while since i walked those streets, but it comes back to you quickly, far quicker than you thought it would. those feelings, those giddy feelings - heart racing, eyes widening, smile spreading - rush forward. you're back. this time it's a new city, older, wiser. or maybe that's you. good things come in threes - PRESS PASSES, SALES, BIRTHDAY PARTIES - and there are no bad things here. Only shopping bags filled with jade rings, slouchy army jackets, and buckets full of candy. there are last minute concerts and tea dates with abby. there are after-school after-noon teas and after-after-noon tea after-hours tours of the met. there is 10 inches of snow. there are tickets (oh! the tickets). there are more chai lattes than you know what to do with and hipster cafes to fill your every need. there is anna wintour, carine roitfeld and bloody hell - street style photos. there is a lot of listening to phoenix. there is even more listening to jay z. there is one spectacular dinner party and many more nights on stoops and fire escapes. there was not enough time to talk and tell and hear and whisper all the things that have been happening this past year. but hey, it's not au revoir, it's just a bientot. till next time.

new girl in town

emanuel ungaro, celine - catwalking
prada, maison martin margiela, dries van noten - style.com

Apart from Abbey-Lee flashing her usual overbitten pout and Catherine McNeil's triumphant return to the catwalk as the sexy voluptuous minx of Prada and Louis Vuitton's retro dreams there was a serious lack of antipodean presence, despite all the hoo ha about Samantha Harris (the first Aboriginal Supermodel?) and even Miranda Kerr, who clomped through Balenciaga and Prada without that much to-do.

Oh no, the title of 'Australian Most Wanted' this season went not to any of these lovely ladies, but to a little known Eastern Suburbs native of scandinavian heritage - Julia Nobis. With her very androgynous looks and strong profile she could be everything from a 90s grunge girl to a pre-raphaelite beauty, and the designers knew it. She was the ultimate blank canvas this season - perfect fodder for calvin klein minimalism and dries van noten excess. What a surprise for a girl who, by her own admission, is a major tomboy and is 'still learning about this fashion stuff'. I think she's going to pick it up just fine.

Anyone want to bet on when Kirsty gives her the cover? I'm willing to lay down serious money for July, mark my words.

bag lady

tommy ton for style.com

I'm no bag lady, in fact, I'd rather shove my damn wallet and keys into my pocket than tote a big huge hulk of leather around. This is, of course, excepting chanel 2.55's and PS1's. For those i would make an exception. I find uni challenging as I must carry a bag, and therefore have to make do with some cheap and cheerful thing picked up at chinatown markets for a tenner. My uniform of oversized clutches doesn't quite stretch to lecture pads and textbooks.

Having said all this, surprise surprise, I have found a bag to warm my heart. Sleek, minimalist, yet packing a huuuge punch in that raspberry coulis red, this little leather pouch is the perfect blend of vintage satchel and minimalist streamlined design. I want one in every colour, for every occasion, and every day. Oh, and it's celine. Are we really that surprised?

Phoebe Philo, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

my rhapsody (in blue?) for burnt orange and blue seems to be right on the money for fashion at the moment. this editorial in the harper's bazaar uk march issue featuring cindy crawford on its smoldering cover with burnt orange coloured text is absolutely stunning. AND styled by Australian expat Vanessa Coyle. Only an Australian would have put this seasons bright blues against a sandy orange backdrop.
Well, it takes one to know one, i guess.

wise words on a wednesday

"I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING MORE CONFUSING OR OVERWHELMING THAN HAVING A BIG WALK-IN WARDROBE. IT WOULD EXHAUST ME HAVING TO SIFT THROUGH THAT MANY CLOTHES. IF YOU KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR BODY, YOU CAN ACTUALLY TURN 15 OR 20 GREAT ITEMS INTO A HUNDRED OUTFITS…

IF YOU HAVE TOO MANY OPTIONS, I FIND THAT YOU ACTUALLY END UP LOSING YOUR DIRECTION AND THE SENSE OF WHO YOU ARE."

lady liberty

"the chosen resort of the artistic shopper"
Oscar Wilde

it strikes many people as very, very weird that my favourite subject at university is history. i just love it - i lap it up - it is my bread and butter and my pudding. Give me history and I am happy, and never more so when I'm wading through journal articles in the belly of the fisher library stacks, or swotting up on anything (and everything) from prostitution in victorian london to re-patriation of assyrian bas reliefs to fashion as a class indicator in pre-revolution france. I'll read about it, learn about it and deeply, deeply love it as long as it happened about a century ago.

libertylondon.co.uk

So, then, it's really no wonder that my favourite store in the whole of the world is Liberty of London. Land's End does hold a particular place in my heart and Colette in Paris is a marvel of design, space and style, but in terms of combining my two great loves, Liberty trumps them all. For within this faux-Tudor building with its dark timber beams and vaulted ceilings lie a store literally filled with history and fashion smarts. Within this store where Oscar Wilde once walked you can peruse Dries Van Noten, shrug into a Josh Goot dress and slip into Nicholar Kirkwood heels. It is a mind-boggling headfuck to get your noggin around - the same rooms where once fob watches, ruffled shirts and waistcoats must have hung are now the ethreads of over 60 celebrated world designers, a specific 'scarf' room and yards and yards of charming liberty print as far as the eye can see.

the scarf room's display of hermes scarves

Liberty is having a bit of a moment. Yasmin Sewell - everyone's favourite fashion buyer - is creative director, and under her watchful eye (and flawless taste) Liberty has undergone a marvelous transformation. Lagging behind in the fashion stakes, Liberty has now shot forward with exclusives of Michael Van Der Ham's gorgeous sequin/leather/silk/crepe de chine piece-meal collection, Eddie Borgo jewelry and Racquel Allegra gypsy bohemia threads. If that's not enough, the shoe room alone should entice you. Think a space dedicated to shoes in the most incredible way - shoes hung from ceilings, shoes perched on the shelves of shoe cases, shoes shoes shoes (and not a drop to drink). What I loved was the room I nominated 'the aussie hang out'. Yasmin Sewell is certainly a bit of a patriot, one of the women's fashion rooms was stocked with Josh Goot, Richard Nicoll and Michelle Jank. For antipodeans with a fashion bent this store gives a lot of comfort in bizarre ways.

The best thing about Liberty, though, is the space itself. Within that Tudor building is a an atrium of light and air - the dark timber is off played with natural light and huge floor to ceiling mirrors propped up against the walls (not hanging, darling) to open up the interior. Everything is spaced out, in some rooms clothes hang on all four walls but the middle is bare save for a minimalist couch or two, leaving you free to wander and browse with relative ease. Even when packed this store is not claustrophobic, and the most clumsiest of girls (hello!) can feel relatively safe.

one of liberty's great merchandising displays. love the jungle theme!

When I was there I could see Yasmin's touch everywhere. She has a light, effortless yet utterly charming way about her - the scarf room was totally her (and reminded me of the belt space in Browns she started up) - that can turn a shop into a destination. I know, I know, I'm a little biased towards my ultimate style icon Yasmin. But the fact of the matter is, she is not only truly stylish but also supremely talented at what she does (which happens to be fashion, natch). She's a buyer with true taste and vision, she was one of the first to pick up on Christopher Kane and now Michael Van Der Ham, Ileana Makri and Dress Up, and not only that but she knows how to create a welcoming and inviting space for clothes, beauty, accessories and everything in between. It's pragmatic i suppose - if people buy, her job is safe - but i truly feel as if Liberty is not hampering for your money, but hampering for your time.

Yasmin Sewell hard at work at the 'Open Call' Liberty London buying day

If you are an artistic shopper then Liberty is THE place for you. I've gabbed on about fashion but Liberty also has everything from flowers to furniture. If you have a little thing for history then Libty is THE place for you. The store that pioneered the pre-raphaelite aesthete movement with its liberty prints and fabric peddling is too well-entrenched in British fashion history to be anything but.

But, aside from all this, if you want a shop to be more than a shop, to be an experience (and a happy one at that), that, even if it doesn't result in shopping bags, still leaves you with that giddy 'new purchase' buzz, then Liberty is the shop for you. It's a shop for shoppers, and by god, I am one of those.

maniac

themaniamania

Tamila Purvis has left her fashion stylist days behind to become a jewelry designer - and HOW! She paired up with Art Director Melanie Kamsler to create ManiaMania, that kind of rough, tough and mean jewelry that just goes with anything and everything. The design duo took inspiration from the 1973 cult classic 'Holy Mountain', so think lonely desserts, sultry sirens and natural stones to send chills to your bones. Raw chunks of quartz find their homes on molten bits of melten, rings twist over fingers like claws and big cuffs with a sharp curve clamp down like handcuffs. My favourite is the Immortals Necklace - a hunk of rose quarts within a twisted golden cage on a chain and leather tie. It is part glamour, part harsh edges and all organic.

I've been searching and searching for the pieces since November last year, when Harpers Bazaar's December issue featured the Immortals Necklace in all its roughly hewn glory. It reminded me of a necklace I used to have (but lost) with a bit of quartz stone hanging from a ribbon, simple, yet startlingly organic. I cut out the picture of the necklace and had been carrying it around in my wallet with me ever since.

the mania mania look book

Then yesterday, completely by happy accident, I stumbled upon them in the Corner Shop's Strand Arcade store on my break from work. There it was - sitting happily in a display cabinet, testing my powers of lenten resistance. I tried it on anyway, you know, all in the name of blog research, and it is the perfect piece - the leather sits comfortably against the back of the neck to not only provide a surface that won't be irritating for sensitive skin but also allows for the length of the piece to be adjusted. But more than this, the scope of the necklace - that beautiful piece of quarts enclosed in its gilded cage - was astounding. It hung perfectly from the chain and sat against my chest like a prize. It was captivating, and stunning, and all things lovely.

Ultimately money was the rate limiting step here. But hey, I can still appreciate beautiful things from afar! So even if this necklace isn't mine, i can hold out hope. And I'm going to keep carrying that little scrap of paper in my wallet until then.

Prices range from about $100 to $400. ManiaMania jewelry available in the Corner Shop and Zimmerman stores around Australia.
