Ode to the Jacket

There is a lot of obsession in the world of fashion about various elements of an outfit, in particular the accessories. Interchangeable and relatively more affordable as they often are, shoes, bags, belts, hats, gloves, scarfs and every other little scrap of leather, metal or material you could conceivably adorn yourself with are all much adored by women the world around. However i'd like to compose an ode to my favourite part of an outfit: the Jacket.

Unwilling to sound hopelessly naive, i am aware that there are many different kinds of jackets. Short and cropped, long and languid, double breasted, epaulettes, fitted, tailored, bomber, bikie, safari and schoolgirl... Almost any conceivable stereotype has its own related jacket. And i love them all.

There is a sense of incompletion about an outfit, in my opinion, when it does not have a jacket. A well chosen jacket can add something incredible to an outfit, adding a depth and interest to it that you can never achieve with your shoulders bare and your arms unadorned. A Jacket covers and stimulates, all at the same time. A jacket can be a full stop at the end of a sentence, or a comma to encourage further thought, or an ellipsis... to be continued.

An outfit all in black can become jaw-dropping when a shot of colour in a jacket is added. An outfit all in colour can become chic and sophisticated when a sombre, simple black jacket is thrown on.

The way you wear a jacket can also add to its significance. Just like any other item of clothing, a jacket can reveal something about yourself. Just like how stiletto-wearers are instantly identified as glamorous and fabulous, when someone casually throws on a jacket they become that terrible cliche of french insouciance, when a girl bites her lip and wears a loose man's blazer she is hip and cool in an un-replicable way, when a girl dons a fur coat she can take herself back to the 1920s when everything was much more fun, even if she's wearing a leather mini dress underneath.

Enough of me, let the jacket talk for itself!
