Sometimes in our fashion bubble things can get a little jaded. I was shopping with a friend of mine the other day and she picked up a Lisa Marie Fernandez neoprene dress from the rack. "Fabulous," I intoned, looking longingly at its clinging silhouette. She stared at me in disbelief. "It's a wetsuit". I looked at it again, so it was in all its neoprene glory. I mean, I knew scuba was a big trend last spring/summer, but this is a step too far, non?

I understand that the LMF clothes take scuba very literally, but there are ways to work neoprene into a collection without necessitating snorkle masks and flippers. Ohne Titel, rising stars of New York, put together a beautiful collection today, of modern draping, geometric prints and neoprene accents. It was sporty in a way that isn't sporty at all - there were mesh pockets, jogging trouser lines and scraped back hair, but these were in rustling silks and drop shoulder jackets that would look out of place at even the most fabulous New York gym. These were clothes for New York streets as per - for cool, hip, downtown things that run around at the Standard, the Soho Grand and the Breslin before nursing a hangover the next day over bitter citrus salads and turkish coffee at Cafe Gitane. The neoprene leotards, dresses and jumpsuits are apparently only going into special order production, which is a shame, because they pulled the outfits all together. They gave it all an oil-slick of sexy, a touch of high-shine body-con glamour that contrasted well with all the loose, languid drapery of the clothes.

I guess if you can't get your hands on a limited edition neoprene bodysuit, you better get one of Lisa Marie Fernandez's pieces after all. Just make sure you dress it down under silky jackets, over tie-front harem pants or peeking out from cut away dresses.
