an australian in paris

You can always tell an Australian on the fashion circuit. She's often the girl wearing the slightly casual look a simple dress and a trench coat, a suit and a clutch tucked under an arm, a totally desirable sweater over a plain skirt. She's got hair that defies belief - long and glossy or curly beyond control. She's got sun-kissed limbs that go on for days. None of these really fit into australian stereotypes - there's no blonde hair, no denim cut offs, no Erin Wasson chic. But hey, isn't it about time that my little nation got recognised for something more than holding a surfboard or felling dangerous critters like brown snakes and crocodiles? Our fashion reputation in the world is one of utmost respect. As Garance Dore said, way back in May when I got the chance to meet her - the Australian girl is clever, warm, sexy and effervescent. She glows. But, and here is the material point, she is 100% real. There is no artifice to the Australian girl, or the Australian style. Everything she wears, she loves. Everything she does, she does with conviction.

And she does it all with a smile.
