don't worry, be happy.

Margot Robbie in Vogue Australia November 2013, styled by Stevie Dance

Okay, things are about to get a little bit silly. Things to do if you want to be instantly, irrevocably happy. Watch About Time. Listen to Kiss You (I said silly!!). Read The Rosie Project. Go to The Noodle Markets. Eat popsicles. Think big.

reel love

None of them made it through, but they're still my favourites. Sure, it says something about the society we live in that we - or maybe it's just me? - would even care about this kind of stuff, but I've always been drawn to star quality, and the look of light on things.

what a lot of parties

"'Oh Nina, what a lot of parties.' (... masked parties, Savage parties, Victorian parties, Greek parties, Wild West parties, Russian parties, Circus parties, parties where one had to dress as somebody else, almost naked parties in St John’s Wood, parties in flats and studios and houses and ships and hotels and night clubs, in windmills and swimming-baths, tea parties at school where one ate muffins and meringues and tinned crab, parties at Oxford where one drank brown sherry and smoked Turkish cigarettes, dull dances in London and comic dances in Scotland and disgusting dances in Paris – all that succession and repetition of massed humanity … Those vile bodies...)"

Evelyn Waugh, Vile Bodies

Paris Hilton by Sofia Coppola in Elle July 2013

We all seem to be drawn to star quality - the brightness and the ebullience that makes famous people so famous - like moths to a flame. We pore over the pages of gossip magazines and discuss celebrities with our friends with a very real sense of investment into their lives. Some more than others, yes, but it's something we have programmed into our DNA since we first tore out that Leonardo DiCaprio poster from Dolly magazine, or we played our 'mysterious girl' single so many times we wore it out. It's heartening - endearing even - to realise that even the loftiest of lofty idols is capable of being starstruck. Sofia Coppola, the girl crush to end all girl crushes, bought up in the foothills of Hollywood and never short on celebrity acquaintances, is as drawn to star quality as the rest of us. It's pretty clear from this spread on Paris Hilton in the July issue of Elle US. The socialite, dolled up in tasteful makeup, canoodling her dog beneath baroque chandeliers and mirrored bedheads, is a slightly toned-down version of herself, but still radiating that sense of celebrity and persona and money which is really what we talk about when we talk about fame.

Sofia understands - as F.Scott Fitzgerald and Evelyn Waugh understood before her - that what draws us to stars (talent or no, Paris Hilton is certainly a star) is not actually the looks or the love but the lifestyle. When we see a celebrity we don't ever really see the movies they have been in or the model they're sleeping with but the parties, what a lot of parties, that they call meaningless but to us, mere humans, seem like everything. When people pose the question 'why is Kim Kardashian famous for doing nothing' they are slightly missing the point. What she 'does' is live a moneyed lifestyle that speaks of everything that money can bring. It doesn't have to be Kim K. Pick your poison. But I've seen enough Gossip Girl to know that now, more than ever, we are as closely aligned to the celebrity-obsessed, stargazing society of the 1920s as we ever were. We dream in technicolour, we look in repetition and we long for carelessness. All of Sofia's movies have, in some way or another, dealt with this central conceit of being young and beautiful and so very, very rich. Perhaps because she is part of that world she always treats her characters if not through a rose-coloured lens then at least without judgement. Don't ask me whether that's a good or a bad thing, I love her too much to be able to answer. But I know that I can't wait to see The Bling Ring because I, like every other warm-blooded human being just cannot get enough of that foul dust that floats in the wake of dreams.

cinematic style: Alexis Bledel in Sin City

This one is pretty much just for those earrings. Man, I had a whole double page spread in my notebook for those earrings back in the day. I dreamt up ways to recreate them, scoured the local diva for a pair that I could pass off as the ones, but they were never as good. Never as long, never as dangly, never as heavy, never as bedecked out in crosses and stars and peace signs and all things kind of kitsch and over the top. Back then I had a beaten up leather jacket that I used to wear with ratty band tee shirts and stove pipe jeans. I knew those earrings would be the best finish to that outfit. Jingle jangle perfection, tacky enough to make a plain outfit super cool.

You can see them to best effect in this scene. Little Lorelai Gilmore, so full of sass. I know that Becky is kind of the bad guy, or at least one of them, but she was always one of my favourite characters in Sin City (well, her and Hartigan. Dish). Something about that wide, blue-eyed earnestness and small-town charm. Gotta love a country girl trying to find her feet in the big bad city. Those earrings were all part of the general effect. Even more so than that corset, and the lace up boots, and that leather jacket - probably because, when shot in that pulp fiction black-and-white, metal stands right out. Oh those earrings! I think the search might be back on...

I've got Melissa to thank for this one. Since I've been so out of touch with the internet because of work and uni recently, I might never have seen this fantastic outfit if she hadn't tweeted me. And oh, how good is it? I'm repeatedly struck by how great Ashley Olsen's sense of proportion and texture is. She is a small girl - smaller than me! - and yet she manages to wear these great swathes of fabric without letting them overcome her completely. It has something to do with the way she plays off heavy knits with lighter linen skirts, flat sandals with flashy anklets, a spectacular exotic-skinned bag (or backpack, natch) and some heavy jewellery. We must be on the same wave length (I am Ashley Olsen after all) because I've started to wear my chunky gold bangles again. There's something about that click clack as you move your hand - I find the noise that jewellery makes really beautiful for some reason. Maybe it's because my mum used to wear heaps of bangles when I was a kid. I don't know.

I was talking with a friend the other day about style duality - how there are always two sides (or more!) to your style personality. I think my two are French classics and 90s minimalism. I love that Ashley Olsen look, that Carolyn Bessette Kennedy relaxing in Nantucket in sweatshirt and trousers look, that New York simplicity of a cotton shirt and denim (nothing comes between me and my calvins). At the moment I've been leaning towards the latter. I've been wearing a lot of denim and big sweaters, a lot of long skirts and big sweater, a lot of tapered trousers and, well, big sweaters. There's nothing new about any of this, but I think this winter I'm going to try and play with proportion even more. Massive massive massive coats. Ballooning skirts and thick, long-line sleeveless sweaters. Same same but different, you know?

cinematic style - Johnny Depp in Chocolat

Stevie does a pretty great series of posts like this - where she takes the wardrobe of a character or characters from the movies and shares what's great about it. I've been thinking of starting one for a little while, and a recent re-viewing of Chocolat reminded me just how great that film is. The provincial french life, Vianne's red suede heels, that incredible spanish-influenced soundtrack! I studied this film as a related text in year 12 English, but the first time I saw it was as a shiny-haired 10 year old with my best friend and her mum. What I remember most about the aftermath was how much we both wanted to each chocolate - we ended up dragging her mum into the corner store to buy us Kinder Surprises - and I have loved this ever since. My mum has a friend who is like Vianne. A veritable free spirit, she wears 1950s-esque clothes and dyes her hair and is one of the most creative and enterprising people I know. A joy to be around.

Vianne's wardrobe is pretty lovely - shawls and full skirts and cropped cardigans and all of that good stuff. But it's Roux's wardrobe that I wanted to remark on. It's Johnny Depp at his best - tall and tanned and quite, quite lovely - with that Irish brogue and that beaten up leather jacket and the sailor's-neck sweaters with holes in their collars. I love how he wears a lot of blue and burgundy in this film - blue on blue, burgundy on burgundy. My favourite look is the blue sweater with the blue cords. Delicious. It's the wardrobe of a guy who goes where the wind takes him, the OG "river rat", someone who will roll up his sleeves and say "I can fix that" with a smile. He wears braces like no-one else and doesn't mind a bit of man jewellery and there's not a cuban heel in sight. You can't tie him down. He'll go away with his worn-in jacket on his shoulders when the time seems right and there'll be nothing you can do about it. But, if you're lucky, he'll come back with a smile on his face and his shirt un-buttoned and you'll give him his favourite - a cup of hot chocolate.

sidekicks

'"In best friend couples one always thinks the other is a sidekick," said my sidekick.'

Alexa Chung in Vogue UK January 2012

vogue uk january 2012, scanned by Luella Luella at TFS

I really want to go on a holiday with my friends, somewhere happy and sunshine-y if at all possible, where we can be alone by the pool drinking dangerous cocktails and alone on the sand reading dangerous books and alone on a boat somewhere fishing and sleeping and sleeping and fishing. I know that Alexa Chung is a bit frustrating, polarising gal that she is, but this article about her time at the Turks and Caicos with her BFF was kind of charming. Putting on a full face of makeup for the beach, making collages out of World of Interiors cut outs, fighting over banana fritters and not having to explain anything to anyone are the kinds of behaviours I can whole-heartedly get behind. If I went away somewhere beachy with my sidekicks we'd fight ever day - about the music to play, the food to eat, the movies to watch, the cocktails to drink - because that's how we are, totally, irrevocably different to the core. But that would be fine with me, as long as we were all there together.
