Rachel Rutt for Wool and the Gang

There are few simpler thrills than the feeling of a light knit in summer. Bare arms and bare legs and sunkissed brows are all well and good, but the real delight comes from slipping into a loosely-knitted sweater in the evening, or popping a brightly coloured tunic over a bikini on the way to the beach. Knitwear has this inescapable wintery feel to it, and wearing it in summer feels like such a subversion. I have a pile of light cotton knits (Amy Kaehne's are my favourite!) which are on constant rotation when the weather heats up. But now I have some new pieces to add to the wishlist. Rachel Rutt - one of my favourite Australian models, a real raw and natural beauty - has collaborated with British-based company Wool and the Gang on a series of 'knit kits' or patterns and styles for knitted garments. Rutt famously has one of the most interesting personal styles on the australian model circuit and these designs play into that playful, organic bent to her wardrobe. There's a knitted bikini, the perfect breezy tunic, a cropped sweater, a tubular skirt and a cut-out one piece. You get to pick the colour of your wool ('Happy Shiny Cotton', perfect for summer) and all you need to add yourself is needles. I haven't knitted in a long time - not since that first holey scarf pieced together in patches during visits to my grandma (you could tell which bits I had knitted and which she had knitted by the amounts of dropped stitches in each section). But knitting is definitely having its second (second) wind. I remember about 5 years ago when everyone was talking about the revival of knitting, I think there's another one now. Back then it was more about reviving the craft, now it definitely has a fashion feel to it. Oversized scarves, pom pom beanies and knitted clutches are merely the beginning. I think I might have to get a 'knit kit' starter pack and try again...
