don't worry, be happy.

Margot Robbie in Vogue Australia November 2013, styled by Stevie Dance

Okay, things are about to get a little bit silly. Things to do if you want to be instantly, irrevocably happy. Watch About Time. Listen to Kiss You (I said silly!!). Read The Rosie Project. Go to The Noodle Markets. Eat popsicles. Think big.

shop ghost one two three

It's girls, girls, girls over at the new and improved Shop Ghost. I like the new direction the site has taken. Low-fi shots of gals and their clothes are my kind of thing. (also, Parrot Cay resort, yes please).

winter's hour

If there was a time of day that belonged solely to Winter - and winter alone - it would be right after sunrise, those moments that some bright spark decreed 'dawn', when everything is quiet and still, and light and clear, and no matter where you are you feel like you own the whole world. Summer lays claim to that blazing, hazy middle of the day, Spring would be a balmy evening of thickening air and the promise of heat, autumn can only ever be those hours in the afternoon just before the sun sets and the leaves start to drift slowly from the trees. Winter, however, winter is this. Those precious few minutes of turkish delight skies and marshmallow clouds. So fleeting but so slow, a poetic motion that crosses the horizon with the grace of a ballet dancer and then disappears from view, leaving only grey and white behind it. That is what people mostly remember about winter. Dampness, whiteness, grey-tinged photo snaps of girls with scarves pulled tight around their necks. But in reality the heart of winter will always be the dawn.

We got into Paris in the morning. Proper morning, a farmer's morning, not the kind of morning where you amble down the road to get brunch at 11 am, but the kind of morning where the sun hasn't even risen yet and you struggle to find somewhere to get coffee that's not Les Macdos. Bleary-eyed but excited we stumbled off the Eurostar and into a cab, speeding alongside the Seine and watching Paris slowly wake up. Lights came on in the apartments in a perfectly-timed wave that started on the top floor, commuters shrugging on coats and scarves hopped onto vélos and sped off into the day, BCBG femmes slowly walked the sidewalks, being led from the perfectly-manicured hands by dogs so chic they could only live in Paris. When we got out of our cab at our new address for the week - an apartment nestled on the corner of an old building in the 16th, the kind of place you have dreams about when you plan to pack it all up and move, high ceilings, wooden floors, and a working shower - that morning light made everything so fresh. A fresh start in a fresh city even if only for one week! Even the Dominos pizza (even here, even here) looked fresh. In a matter of hours - of minutes, even - we would be running around our neighbourhood, finding the cheese shop where we would get a tranche of hand-churned butter with flecks of real sea salt, the boulangerie where we would buy a stick of baguette still so warm and so new that it left flour marks all over our hands, the patisserie that would become our second home as we flocked their daily for their specials, a religeuse here, a croissant there. And then we would reconvene back at our apartment for our first breakfast, spent alternating feverishly between our dog-eared map and our plates of food, planning everything that we would see and do and eat and enjoy.

We hadn't yet done anything. We hadn't done anything at all. We would - we would spend an afternoon holed up in the warm surrounds of the Laduree tea room, hiding from a brisk winter chill, we would spend an evening laughing with new friends in a bistro in the 7th, forgetting the time and almost missing the last metro home, we would spend a day in Versailles, a morning at Saint Schapelle, an afternoon in the catacombs, an evening at the top of the Arc de Triomphe. We hadn't done any of those things but that morning bathed in fresh light we knew that we would. Some people say that a week in Paris isn't enough but that's not true. A day in Paris is enough. Because there is always the promise of more. That's what dawn really means. The day hasn't even begun yet. And yet, and yet! How beautiful it all looks from there.

just smile

I love my weekends off. I feel like I can either pack a million things in one day, do the stuff that I just can't do because I work in retail and every other weekend I'm chained to a cash register, helping people buy stuff, or I can flip to the other end of the spectrum, lazing about, doing absolutely nothing, nothing at all. This weekend is going to be a busy weekend, I can already feel it. But I have a smile on my face because it means that I'll be seeing friend I haven't seen in ages, and doing thing I haven't done in ages like have fish and chips for dinner at Watson's Bay, and watch the Bill Cunningham documentary, squeeze in a quick visit to my favourite shop, babysit my cute cousins that I never see anymore tonight, and finally get through that stack of magazines piling up dangerously by my bed. This is a lovely photo of Stevie Dance. It makes me excited to spend a whole weekend smiling.

all white

All-white and monochromatic looks are becoming increasingly more intriguing to me at the moment. I've been wearing a lot of black on black - I know, I know!! I said I hated that and only ever wore it at work - as I have this great acne drapey tunic that looks kind of toga-esque when tucked into my midi skirt. I guess it's about creating texture and interest when you wear all one colour. It shouldn't be one dimensional, indeed, if it is it means you haven't thought enough about what you're wearing. Often this is said to be style's cardinal sin; over-thinking your outfit. But when it comes to monochrome it is all about the careful balance between looking like a pantone colour sheet and looking like Taylor Tomasi Hill. It's easy to create interest and dimension to an outfit when you mix textures or include drapes or throw in accessories in contrast colours. What is an inherently simple look becomes complex through a few added extras. I like this outfit a lot. I like the glimpse of tummy between the raggy shirt and the tied skirt. I like how the crisp folds of starchy white shirt-material create shadows and tucks and folds. I like that Hermes bucket bag, a little grubby and a lot loved. I like the simple accessories and the mark that elastic bands leave against the skin. What I like most? When I saved this photo I only did it because I wanted to rhapsodise about one-colour dressing. I didn't even know it was her.

mood

This week I've been revisiting the much-denigrated Spring 2011 Celine collection, all oxblood red and bright blue, strange bedfellows indeed but oh so perfect. I'm still feeling texture, but this time it's the contrast of a leather skirt with a simple, starchy shirt, or shaggy, super-soft fur against a well-worn tee shirt a la the olsen twins. Or even Stevie's last cover for RUSSH, an exuberant and gleeful Aymeline in winter whites with deliriously fuzzy sleeves. I still can't get this girl out of my head, With her ludicrously long tresses about the same length as mine - how does she make it work? - and her little chanel ballet flats and her mossy green sweater. And, with a new pair of boots, I've been looking to Decade Diary for tips. She says that socks poking out the top is okay. Well, I agree!

Heat Wave

It's always funny hearing about people on the other side of the world living in a heatwave. Especially when it's so chilly outside that your nose turns red and you've racked up a huge bill because you're keeping your heater on all night (guilty, sorry). Stevie is coping with the heatwave in New York in just the way I want to in the sweltering Sydney summer once I own all of this (ignore the coat). Of course Stevie is all over it. She is Australian after all. And, as Australians, we do three things very, very well. Barbecue dinners. Cricket. And Dressing for Hot Weather. Personally, I'm of the organic cotton tee shirt and loose linen pants persuasion. But this Summer I hope to add to my repertoire a loose dress and hat. I've got 4 months to sort my shit out. Wish me luck!

ps the most hilarious thing about the phrase "heat wave" is that I'm watching Castle at the moment and it's the episode where Castle debuts his new book and it's called "Heat Wave" about Nikki Heat, and Beckett gets all mad because they have a photoshoot with half-naked stripper-cops at the police station... I love Sunday night TV!

last

my two favourite shots - white on white and that celine bag, as well as a gorgeous rust coloured arnsdorf coat, on sale at the moment in the corner shop strand

The end is always sad, no matter what. That bittersweet feeling when you've reached the end of a box of macarons (in less than 15 minutes), the end of the hot water shocking your senses, the end of a book, the best book, your favourite book, and that sad feeling when you know that there is just no more. But I think endings can be good too, the sweet part of bittersweet, when they inspire you and intrigue you and leave you wanting more. It is then that you manically google search that author's back catalogue and read all his other works, it is then that you find yourself forever searching for something to top that last experience - a better creme brulee, a better pair of comely ballet flats. Even if they could never top that first experience - and often, here's the rub, they just can't, as rosy glasses reflect such a bright view - they are an extension of the journey. An avoidance of the inevitable.

Today I picked up the last issue of RUSSH with Stevie Dance as the Editor, and the last of Vogue Paris with Carine Roitfeld in the same role. Carine Roitfeld has split ties with Vogue completely, as you all well know, and amidst much Twitter speculation, it seems that Stevie is going to be working on other projects whilst still contributing to RUSSH - one imagines it is not easy to put a magazine together whilst living in New York. So it is an end for RUSSH with Stevie in control, though not a goodbye to her legacy of indie photographers, worn in leather and pretty girls not wearing bras. Likewise, how could Vogue Paris be anything other than what it is today without Carine's challenging, sensual and totally on trend touch. Carine managed to make a magazine that was at once wholly "Paris", wholly "Fashion" and wholly "Sex", three things that all women really want, right? It is fitting that these last issues are also some of the best in memory. I'm not a regular buyer of RUSSH, but when I am it is always become something attracts me to it, this month it was for the natural and raw features, including a fantastic column by Lesley Arfin on work and a lovely piece by Sophie Ward on sleep and waking. The still lifes and little analogue camera shots are great as usual. Vogue Paris is bigger than ever, not physically maybe (The October issue wins the cake there, surely), but in spirit definitely. It was all about outrageous looks and going out with a bang. Gone, but most certainly not forgotten.
