Ray Ban Wayfarer Giveaway

All the cool kids wear Ray Ban wayfarers. This is a known, scientifically proven fact. Remember your adolescence and think of the boys and girls in white tee shirts and blue jeans - the ones you loved but could never make love you, no matter how hard you tried - and I guarantee you they had a pair of wayfarers perched across their sunkissed nose, hanging from the thick-band neckline of their cheap cotton tees, pushed up through their sea-salt flecked hair. Which is why I could not be more excited to announce that I am giving away a pair of classic, black, cooler-than-thou Ray Ban Wayfarers thanks to the generous people at Vision Direct. The conditions are simple: you can do one, a few or all of the following for each entry:

 like Vision Direct on Facebook
share the Vision Direct Facebook page
follow Vision Direct on Twitter
subscribe to the Vision Direct newsletter
comment here with a link to your favourite pair of sunglasses from the Vision Direct website (you can find all of their brands here, including Celine mmm)

You don't have to do all of these things but for maximum entries you can! It's totally up to you. My advice - definitely do the last one, since you have to comment here anyway so I know that you've entered and to give me your email address so I can contact you if you win! I'll be checking all the entries. The winner will be drawn in one week! And the best news? This competition is open to all readers, Australian and International.

Good luck, and stay cool.

The ear is the thing. I'll be keeping it simple with BRVTVS's delicate ear cuff, but this is clearly a case of anything is more.

getting old

1 and 3 - style.com // 2 - vogue daily

I love hearing people write rude comments in the Ashley Olsen TFS thread about how she's dressing too old for her age. Those comments are like catnip for me. I love how Ashley Olsen dresses (understatement, I idolise it). I love dressing more than ten years older than my age, I love the idea of aging gracefully, I love the idea of sensible clothes, quietly elegant in their unfussiness and simplicity. That's why I love these street style looks from London and New York - Sarah Harris and Virginia Smith, two of my absolute favourite mag girls, the former for her long grey hair and the latter for that one line in The September Issue, when Anna fixes her with a withering stare in regards to that lovely accessories shoot with Daria Werbowy, "I think it's pretty" - of women who are so supremely comfortable in their skin that they wear their hair naturally grey, they run bare-faced to a fashion show with just a celine pouch for comfort, and they team a cashmere turtleneck with a fur coat and jeans. I love looks that come together with little thought at all - the clothes pulled from the drying rack and slipped into, the shoes grabbed by the laces as you run out the door. In my experience, it is those outfits that look the best. And that confidence and understanding of your personal style can only come with age.

that girl in the hat

All throughout Paris and London I toyed with getting a hat. I perused the windows at Lock and Co, I stalked the display area for Maison Michele at le Bon Marche. The idea was fermented in Milan, after seeing scores of women running through the Galleria wearing their purchases from Borsalino. After that it just grew - the Italians wear hats well - until by the time I got to Paris all I could think about was snapping up an expensive felt topper of my own. I thought I had put this whole hat thing to rest. Remember the year before last when every second post was about hats and how I was obsessed with finding the right one? Well I found one, and I wore it, but I soon came to the realisation that I might not be a hat person. As I tried to explain to my friend in Paris, it all seems fine and dandy to buy a hat in Europe, and wear it with belted tweed coats and cashmere scarves wrapped tight, but then you get back to Sydney, and instead of being that girl in the hat, you're just that girl in the hat. I'm not convinced that I'm ready for the scrutiny that comes with wearing a hat. But I just can't quite get this image out of my head; of hair tucked up, and oversized turtleneck sweaters, and a stiff felt hat on top of it all.

the hood

Paris is as lovely now as it has ever been - those wide boulevards, that white light, those corner cafes, that cuisine, cuisine, cuisine, those "soldes" signs, those double windows, that clear air, those late-night dinners, that sense of contentment, those iconic moments - the only thing that it needs right now is a cosy hood. Man it's cold.

all wrapped up

My favourite way to keep warm in this snap-chill Europe is having is layering on the scarves. I took two with me (delicious Benah cashmere travel wraps and snoods) and I've picked up a few more - insane I know! - but I've found it so fantastic to layer them all up together to stay extra toasty. What you want is a combination of textures, colours and thickness - one cashmere, one lighter wool, one thin cotton gauze one thicker knitted snood. I've taken to twisting mine together and then wrapping them around my neck once or twice so that the colours meld. Some of my favourite scarves for layering? This red zara one, the Isabel Marant striped fringed number, and the classic Benah cashmere wrap. Enough to keep you high and dry and warm and toasty and all of that while you run around beautiful European cities dusted lightly with snow.

shearling beloved

Oh GOD I just love shearling so much. I love to wear my little Carly Hunter shearling vest, I love to layer it under coats and over jackets, I love to wear it on its own and just surreptitiously rub my belly during class, comforted by its soft folds. And you know what the best thing is? Shearling has actually become a classic. Once a fickle trend, now a wardrobe staple. Don't you love it when that happens? When something so simple yet so wonderful traverses that tricky canyon between a one-season-wonder and true wardrobe-staying power, which shearling has done with marvelous aplomb and, it must be said, warmth. There's nothing better to brave that icy, bone-chilling New York chill - enough to make even me, a cold-weather-phile, break down into tears of despair - than a little shearling something. A burnt ochre suede and shearling coat perhaps, or even a full blown black number with fuzzy sleeves and a boxy cut. All fashion week I've been keeping my eye out for shearling with the vague intentions of putting a post together of my favourite looks, but Tommy just shoots so much better than anyone else I can't help but use his pictures. These were some of my favourite shearling moments, but another was Candice's amazing shearling-lined coat, which kept her snug and warm with only the briefest glimpse of shearling poking out.

One of the interesting things about shearling is how both a little and a lot create a lasting impression. I love to wear my vest in all its drapey, oversized glory over sweaters and with big scarves, but I equally enjoy just the hint of it underneath another jacket. The third picture above is a perfect example of this - she's only got a tiny little shearling collar, barely even that, a little shearling puff - but it makes such a huge impact. It has me dreaming again of that shearling coat from Carly Hunter's new winter collection which Talisa and I previewed way back in October or something. I've seen a lot of those coats on the streets of New York - wool sleeves and a shearling body or vice versa - and they are so incredible in real life. With a pair of straight-leg jeans, an oatmeal-coloured tee shirt and a pair of anklets there could be no more perfect outfit. I might have to have another look at that coat when it drops in-store at The Corner Shop. Until then, I'll be satisfied with my little vest and playing with ways to layer it. Let's hear it for shearling!

ps. don't you just love stevie's hat? I still love hats, and there's good news on that front. All I can say now is thank god for New York.
