Valentino chose not to take the YSL route of showing classic pieces, but designed a whole new collection for his last hurrah. Of course, it had his mark all over it; the floral prints, the bows, the chiffon and beaded necklines, the assymetrical lines, the one shouldered dresses, the little cocktail dresses, lunch suits and boxy jackets squashed between the undeniable beauty, elegance and awe-inspiring evening gowns that seemed to shimmer on the catwalk. Valentino just knows women. He understands the female form, and dresses it to perfection, accentuating the bust, drawing in the waistline, pleating to cover soft spots, one shouldered dresses to draw attention to his favourite area of the female body; the collar bone.
It was glamorous and chic and impeccably put together and, well, fabulous. There really is no other word for it. Valentino is synonymous with fabulous, as signified by the A-list attendees of fellow designers (Elbaz and Prada), ex-models (Herzigova, Schiffer), actresses (Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman) and the models he put on the catwalk, especially the sublime Natalia Vodianova who walked as if she had been born in a Valentino dress. What a splendid way to take a bow, and show the fashion world that there needs to be more deisngers like Valentino who dress women as women, not as robots or hipsters or angry femme fatales. Women, real, strong, powerful, passionate, sexy women. A round of applause for a true master of design.
I am not a huge Natalia Vodianova fan, but she worked it on the runway at Valentino. She was beautiful, stunning and fierce. Good going girl!
