you look lovely today... just today?

This week is going to seem like casual friday what with all these dressed down looks. Well, not dressed down exactly, more relaxed. You won't find any sexy dresses or pencil skirts here, although as well all know you can be dressed up without being kitted out in bling and lace. I suppose i'm feeling very rested, what with being on uni break (although i haven't really had a break, i've been working the whole time!), and i just feel like wearing casual, comfy, classic clothes. Dressed up of course. I've been following this mantra with a series of tee-shirt and pleated pants outfits topped off with my studded hoodie of course. I'm going up to the mountains this afternoon for some much needed away from sydney time. I love the mountains for their quiet serenity and homely sense of community. You can go to the shops, get the food for the weekend, smile to the shopkeepers, and then retreat back into your cottage and sit curled up in front of the fire for the rest of the time, not seeing, or needing to see, another soul. I spent the weeks before my HSC there, prostrate on a tattered persian rug (the people who own the house are bohemian charmers, a wonderfully fabulous milliner and her naval captain/commander husband. opposites attract, apparently!), with cup after cup of tea, a plate of something freshly baked and all my notes spread around me as i committed the seven wives of Ashurbanipal II of Assyria and the importance of the fool in King Lear to memory. And i think it's something about the quiet of the house that helped. I felt like everything i read made an impact.

She's lucky that she's so radiant and beautiful that she can make a simple look like this so compelling. As i was trawling through pages of celebrity fashions this week for this post my eyes skimmed immediately past the short, tight party dresses and the embellished mini dresses and settled on this simple, elegant look. Maybe i'm going crazy, but i think she looks incredible. I suppose that says more about her beauty than the outfit. But don't you think she looks like an old school movie star? A french one, at that, who can throw on a pair of beautifully fitting jeans (not too tight, not too boyfriend), a tucked in grey tee shirt and a gorgeous double breasted coat/jacket. She looks happy and sunny and carefree, and totally stylish. I've always thought she was supremely beautiful, and i think that simple, unfussy outfits like this only enhance her beauty. She is a very understated beauty. And that hair! Oh, my kingdom for that hair.

God gave with both hands to Taylor Tomasi. She is that rare person who can successfully throw pieces together and mix and match with aplomb. As you can see in this outfit she works the traditional, even ubiquitous breton top with costume jewelry, a rara-skirted pinafore dress, chain bag, clunky ankle boots and a classic trench. And this mix, on someone like Alexa Chung, would come off as hipster and cool (which is fine, of course), but on Taylor it comes as high fashion. She takes all the same elements that everyone else is wearing and she turns it into her own particular brand of youthful eclecticism chic. And on top of that she's super tall, with legs up to her armpits (did you see those photos of her on garance dore where she was wearing a super short shirt dress? arrghghhh), stunning hair and a very warm prettiness. Life's not fair, is it?

What did i say? Casual. Well you don't get much more casual and dressed down than this. Although, to be fair to Maria-Carla, she did pair her super-distressed boyfriend jeans and simple white tee with incredible heels. Those heels are what make the oufit actually, boyfriend jeans and a tee shirt is a lovely outfit (in fact i'm wearing some now) but it's not particularly remarkable in any way. But when paired with those heels it becomes very Carrie Bradshaw, very intriguing. I imagine that there's a story behind those heels, like she wasn't feeling particularly great that morning so threw on her most comfortable, effortless outfit. And in a bid to cheer herself up as she left house she threw on those fabulous shoes. Or perhaps she's on her way home from a late night tryst and doing the walk of shame in some clothes of his that she nicked whilst wearing her party shoes from the night before. Not sure where her party dress is, but hey, it's my imagination, i make the rules.
