today is cancelled

I wish. I'm at work in a big sweater and ill-advised birkenstocks (it's pouring down outside, and a little bit inside too, hmmm), and just trying to stay warm. The only upside? My work is inside sydney's best new cafe. Now that definitely helps.

easy like sunday morning

Yes, I have shamelessly stolen Lin's idea. But when I clicked through to see the collection from her blog and saw the tagline 'easy like sunday morning' I couldn't help but post this, on an easy sunday morning. Easy in the sense that I got up early, made myself a bagel and a cup of tea and ate them while nose-deep in Stephen Fry's biography, dappled light streaming in, promising what I'm sure is going to be a scorcher of a spring day. I do have a lot of work to do, but I know I will get to that later. For now, this sunday is easy. I've always loved that line. It speaks to the poetical simplicity of songwriting, that quality that we call 'lyrical', of course. There are people for whom that kind of artful ease comes so naturally. I remember reading a review of Crazy Heart by Roger Ebert, where he spoke about that line, that great, great line, that bit where Jean walks into Bad's seedy motel room and he says, 'I want to talk about how bad you make this room look.' What a line. What a perfect, perfect country song line, with all of its open-handedness and simple sophistication. I like that. I like things that are obvious, almost self-evident, without being any less elegant.

wake up slow

It's the second day of winter. It's raining. And it's a Sunday. So slip into some cashmere, take your shoes off, and wake up slow.

the weekend

Washed out and sleepy-eyed, with wet-hair and baggy clothes, is how all weekends ought to look if they possibly can. The perfect saturday is one in watercolour.

sunday morning

Sunday morning is cashmere sweaters and white tee shirts and blue jeans and freshly washed hair that's still a tiny little bit wet.

sunday snippets

one and two: me, three: rino

I'm relaxing on my first sunday off in ages by doing things that I won't get to do for the next few weeks as I buckle down with final exam preparation and study. I'm taking care of my skin (with rosey Grown cleanser and toner), I'm reading a book that isn't prescribed for my course (Alexander McCall Smith, you wonderful creature, you), I'm painting my nails and burning candles, and I'm finishing off the last of a block of chocolate carried back by a friend from New York, New York. I wish it was always sunday.

cinematic style - Elle Fanning in Somewhere

 source various from here

I love this movie. It might actually be my favourite Sofia Coppola film. I know that's a big call - especially with that husky-voiced Scarlett Johansson running around Japan like the ingenue that she was in Lost in Translation - but there is something quite wonderful about its total simplicity and ease. It's sunday, distilled into film form. It's those moments of plain happiness, of hours spent by the pool, and ice cream in bed, and the writing of lists, that make up the every day, but have their own kind of importance. Coppola's movies are always about those moments. But in Somewhere I think she does it best. She has said before that it was the first movie she made after giving birth, and her approach had changed. There are some great stills from the production that show her daughter Romy curled around her as she peers into the viewfinder... It's those moments that Coppola captures. The quiet of companionship and the love between a child and a parent that forgives almost anything. One of the (many) good scenes in this film is where Cleo and her dad drink pretend cups of tea in the pool at the Chateau Marmont. At the end, out of nowhere, Cleo explains the plot of Twilight to her father, and he responds with the typical bewilderment of parents towards teen culture. It's so normal, so real that it's quite astonishing. But an even better scene is when the duo are having room service breakfast in their hotel in Italy and are joined by Johnny's one-night squeeze. The look on Cleo's face is priceless. Equal parts condescension and indignation, it is perfectly offset by her peachy-keen linen shirt.

So I know that Cleo is 13 in this movie, and you should dress your age and not your shoe size (which Coppola herself actually said, oops!), but her wardrobe is so great that I can't leave it out. It's all about the stripes - when isn't it, really? - and I don't know what I love more, those loose tee shirts with the thin, almost pin-stripes, or the lemon yellow and grey breton sweater she dons for a ride on a private jet. There are stripey sundresses and playsuits too, in enough mint greens and navy blues to populate an entire A.P.C store. I guess you have to recognise that this is no ordinary teenager, and this is no ordinary movie. They've got Sofia Coppola helming creative direction and picking out petit bateau singlets for Elle to wear. But in many ways the wardrobe of a young teenager is never just the product of the girl herself. Their mums are still calling the shots, remember? That's why you have hard-wearing materials and sensible shoes and nothing ridiculous. Teenagers, being teenagers, will always put their own spin on things, like funny little necklaces or cat-eye glasses. But the beauty of being young and lovely is not needing clothes to make yourself so. Teen Vogue is not really about the clothes, is it? It's about the lifestyle. Clean skin and bright eyes and perfect hair. Of guitar hero, eggs for breakfast and cheeseburgers for dinner.

And since my wardrobe is all about hard-wearing materials and sensible shoes, I can't help but love it. It's lin's normal casual - rendered haute casual because of Elle Fanning's quite spectacular beauty, and beauty in youth is always spectacular, don't you think? - which is, of course, the best kind of casual. It's also a kind of hotel casual - clothes that are made for that hop, skip and jump from room to rooftop pool. I love hotels. When you think about them, and I mean really think about them, they are fascinating places of transience: stop-overs from here to there, somewhere to rest your head for a little while, but just somewhere. So hotel casual, by extension is always going to be the perfect blend of comfort and style. The exciting, maybe even off-beat mix of stripey dresses and colour-blocked sweaters, or the ease and obviousness of jeans and a tee shirt.

normal

It's Sunday, and this is Sunday, and this is lovely, and this is so lovely. I like messy hair and toothy grins and denim and sweaters on a Sunday. I like late breakfasts and long walks and no makeup on a Sunday. I like that Sundays come round every week, but they always seem like such a treat. I like normal things. Bread and butter, bars of soap, Sunday mornings.

end week

1: MNZ // 2-3: winter coping mechanisms: big cups of tea, Bourke St Bakery dark chocolate and sour cherry cookies, and stealing my dad's Benah cashmere wrap // 4: quiet and peaceful at Clarisse's house // 5: peekaboo // 6: Keeping my face, my limbs, my lips and my hair hydrated, and keeping all of that in my Cuval makeup bag from My Chameleon // 7: open windows, even in cold, by kristina // 8: In winter I just can't take these boots off // 9: readings, readings, readings.

I have had a really, really, really good weekend. I wrapped up warm, I drank lots of tea, I had (late) breakfast with my mum, I dressed up as a grungey Angela Chase for a 90s party, I danced to What Would You Do 100% seriously and it was awesome, I took care of my skin, I met up with friends, I slept in late, I did (a little bit of) uni work and readings, I painted my nails, I made some nougat, I watched a terrible Guy Pearce movie, I watched a great episode of SVU, I learnt something new about Napoleon, I wore boots, I didn't go to work, I gave a friend a big hug. I wish it would never end!

black and white

"I want Oreo cookies," my brother said.
"Then go and buy some!" my mum answered.
"How about I make some?" I suggested.

Thanks to Georgia I had the recipe, thanks to my aunt I had some dark, dark, dark Koko black cocoa powder, thanks to my mum I had a free kitchen and a warm oven perfect for baking, thanks to Mimi I had some of the best cookies I've ever had for afternoon tea. My mum says chocolate isn't good for dogs, but you can have the rest of my milk!

day of rest

I love Sundays. I love Sundays so much. I love sleeping in late, and hugging cups of tea to my chest for hours on end and curling up on my couch to read a book - currently the amazing Adam Gopnik's diary of his Parisian life, Paris to the Moon (I could not be more in love with this book, and if you love Paris and creative non fiction then buy it, read it, adore it now, and then email me so we can discuss it, because I've been boring all my friends by talking about it non stop and their faces glaze over and they nod non-commitedly as I gush over his casually brilliant turn of phrase) - and hovering in the kitchen behind my mum as she whisks up something wonderful from that pink kitchenaid of hers. I love that honeyed glaze that rests over everything on a Sunday. I love the way the light crosses through my window, broken by clotted-cream coloured shutters and then rejoined together on the wall in one gloopy, hazy mess. I love a year of Sundays. I even love the smell of Sunday - soap and water and freshly baked bread.

All that and I'm about to go to work! It's not fair. It's really not fair! I want to stay in this bed forever and never leave and not have to go and feign a smile and trudge through a desperate shift that ends at 7 o'clock (7! 7! 7 on a Sunday! That should be illegal). Whenever someone complains about something trivial I always put on a Jeremy Irons voice and say, "Life's not fair, is it? You see I, I shall never be King, and you will never see the light of another day..." But in this case, life really isn't fair. I mean it. Farewell Sunday! I knew thee well...

sneak peek: sunday at frock

The Frock Exchange is one of Sydney's best kept secrets - a consignment store filled with amazing pieces in great condition for even better prices! It's part of the same company that runs Belinda and The Corner Shop so this week for The Corner Shop blog I paid a visit to their sister store, hung out with my friend Chloe (who obligingly posed for some outfit snaps) and rifled through their many racks. What I found was really exciting - canvas Benah bags, linen Amy Kaehne shirts, cute little APC smocks and Alexander Wang knits, incredible (and I mean incredible!) Balmain booties and heels, and the most ridiculous amount of perfect condition Isabel Marant it was insane. There were even pieces from her earlier collections, like shrunken corduroy jackets and the kind of peasant-smocks that she made her name in years ago. It was crazy to see all of these things together, and at such reasonable prices. I think that people kind of forget that the Frock Exchange exists, but it does, and it's amazing. Like any good consignment store all it takes is a little bit of rummaging to find fantastic new things. I hope I get to spend another Sunday there soon!

You can read the whole post (and see all of my favourite pieces!) on the Corner Shop blog here. The Frock Exchange also has a blog where they post about new pieces, outfits of the week and events. It's worth checking out, too.

just smile

I love my weekends off. I feel like I can either pack a million things in one day, do the stuff that I just can't do because I work in retail and every other weekend I'm chained to a cash register, helping people buy stuff, or I can flip to the other end of the spectrum, lazing about, doing absolutely nothing, nothing at all. This weekend is going to be a busy weekend, I can already feel it. But I have a smile on my face because it means that I'll be seeing friend I haven't seen in ages, and doing thing I haven't done in ages like have fish and chips for dinner at Watson's Bay, and watch the Bill Cunningham documentary, squeeze in a quick visit to my favourite shop, babysit my cute cousins that I never see anymore tonight, and finally get through that stack of magazines piling up dangerously by my bed. This is a lovely photo of Stevie Dance. It makes me excited to spend a whole weekend smiling.

sunday afternoon

What I wore today to get brunch with Rachel and Frances. And what I've been wearing practically every day this past fortnight. My faovurite long black jersey skirt, a light tartan Isabel Marant shirt under another light oatmeal coloured oversized jumper. Finished off with sandals and a messenger bag. It's so summery and simple and is the definition of a "go-to" outfit. I don't have to think about it, I just put it on. And, something that made me smile today: It's council clean up in my suburb and everyone has been throwing out their old stuff onto the street for collection tomorrow morning. I managed to snag a couple of vintage Vogue America magazines, including this perfect summery Kate Hudson cover from 2008. I'm in the middle of reading an article from it all about the glamour of the Borromeo family - this is Vogue, but it reads just like Tatler.
