I told you I would be catching up! Well, I was delighted to click through Stefano Pilati's latest collection for YSL and find something truly lovely to watch. It was very YSL, a fitting tribute following the master's death in June. The colours were subdued, slightly too dark for summer maybe, but the style was beautiful, with individually well-crafted and finished pieces as well as a collection that together was cohesive and collective. I really really loved it.
Some of my favourite pieces were the opening look, a kimono-esque jacket over a black crop top (i know, but its YSL, i make exceptions) and plain black skirt. I also love love loved the pant suit in beige with highwaisted tapered pants and matching blazer. 80s, but not in a bad way, which i know some people will think is impossible, but hey, we are talking YSL here.
How many times will i use that phrase? Well, there was a plain t-shirt dress that seemed boring until you looked closer and saw the gathering by string at the waist, falling down in pleats. It should be gravitationally implausible, but hey, we are talking YSL here. A paper bag would look glamorous once Pilati got through with it.
I loved the dress that MariaCarla Boscono wore in the finale, it was a very plain shift dress with a sheer bottom half that swirled around her feet as she walked. And there was a beautiful, if plain, but amazingly well finished empire line floor length dress in creamy white silk. The bandeau bodice was sort of folded over, in an origami style, carrying on the japanese motifs. Loads of sheer panels, black sand-washed silk, some sparkles. I seriously saved about 15 looks to my computer, which is a sort of record. :]
And the shoes! Oh don't get me started on the shoes. When all the other catwalks showed too boring, too crazy, too slick, too out there... YSL's were right bang on the money. I loved the meshy cages they formed around the foot and the studding on the heels and the cages. They were a perfect counterpoint to the luxurious fabrics in the collection and were hard, and fierce, and really covetable. YSL almost always does excellent shoes, though, so i can't say i was surprised.
Minimalism at its best. Trust me, it's going to be big! And i can't wait to see the ad campaign, i'm hoping they shoot somewhere very clean and sharp, maybe the pyramid in the front of the louvre, or something industrial like the metal bars of the eiffel tower. and can we have Freja and Cat shooting the campaign please? i know in all likelihood it'll be Natasha or Anna, but i would love to see my favourites book something big like a YSL campaign. I'm sick of Naomi already, she is flat and boring. Actually, considering the past 3 models, (Gisele, Kate, Naomi) they might go another super. Natalia (not technically a super, but then, neither is Gisele), ooooh what about Christy Turlington? She's on Vogue Paris' cover right not looking adorable. I await with baited breath.
