you don't honestly think i'd steal something that didn't belong to me, do you?

continuing in the audrey love that fills these pages i thought i would give a costume review of how to steal a million. It is the story of the daughter of an art forger who takes pleasure in forging great art very well (he even sources dirt samples from the home town of the artist in question to brush onto the back of the canvas to give the painting authenticity). One forgery was taken and housed in the art museum as a special exhibit, and they were informed that there would be authenticity tests taken on the statue. Horrified by the prospect of her father being caught out and revealed Audrey takes matters into her own hands to steal the statue from the museum before the tests.

She allies herself with a petty thief who broke into her house and whom she assaulted(quite comically, considering she was 5 foot nothing and weighed about 20kg). What she doesn't know is that he (peter o'toole) is actually an investigator working for the government who is onto the trail of audrey's dad. He agrees to help her steal it back, however, and they concoct a great plan involving disguises and everything. Of course they fall in love during the process, but will they succeed in stealing it back? And can they still be together after Audrey finds out that he was spying on her?

Audrey was a little older by when she made this movie, and her hair was not styled in soft curls but rather a chic 60s up-do chignon. She also has matured a bit, embracing 60s styles wholeheartedly. She wears neat skirt suits with boxy felt jackets, cute kid leather gloves that were of different colour to her outfit, bright bright bright colours (think hot pink, lemon yellow, acid green), There were a few bold sunglasses, lace tights and lace panels on dresses, high collars, pretty hats and small heels.

She was supposed to be very stylish, her character was the rich daughter of an expert art forger. Of course, being audrey, she manages to look incredibly stylish even in her nightgown when assaulting the thief/spy. I don't wear much of the 60s stuff myself, but i have a darling friend who does, and she looks fabulous (twig shape, of course) in all these kinds of clothes, hair up in a sort of up-do, lacy embellishments and bright colour. If you, like me, are a bit of an audrey fan, this is one of her lesser known ones but it is just as good as some of the more famous ones. Funny Face will always have a place in my heart, as will Roman Holiday and breakfast at Tiffany's, but this is up there in the top5. And Charade too! Oh and My Fair Lady! And Sabrina! Ah there are so many great audrey movies.

Just as a thought, wouldn't it be lovely to be her, you know, for a day?
