playing with the big boys now

well, well, well. Miranda Kerr, that be-dimpled all-australian beauty from gunnedah (of all places) has really made it. Sure, she had Victoria's Secret before - but so did Heidi Klum and Alessandra Ambrosio. What takes you beyond Victoria's secret and swimwear is this - American Vogue. And not just American Vogue, but the September Issue. The largest issue of the year, received by millions of people across the world. And Miranda, our Miranda, the little aussie who could, is in not ONE, not TWO. but THREE editorials for this powerhouse of a publication. Sure, they might not be only girl editorials, and sure, she's sharing the limelight with other "curvy" "va-va-voom" girls and celebrities, but that doesn't matter. The fact that she is there at all and not left on the edit-room floor (as we saw in the september issue it's only too easy to do "no more hilary and chanel"). She's there looking absolutely bloody fabulous. Nay-sayers can say and do whatever they want, it's all just sticks and stones. This is the real deal.

Why the sudden big deal about Miranda? She walked for Prada and Louis Vuitton. She turned up at the Balenciaga Resort show (but didn't actually do anything). She's been shooting for Elle Us, Vogue Spain and Vogue Italia - with a rumoured cover in the works for Vogue Italia shot by Steven Klein, who shot her in two of the editorials for Vogue US, and we all know he likes to play favourites. But why now? And why Miranda?

It comes down to the 90s revival. By this I'm not talking about the penchant for grungey long skirts and minimalist sleek sheaths. I'm talking about the revival of that 90s era spirit, embodied so well in the cult of the supermodel. That model who was really "on top", who could walk for Chanel in over the top couture and then shoot the next day for Swimwear Illustrated. Who had the figure of the goddess and the personality to match. The girl who could ignite the gossip columns and break a million hearts. It's about the personality and the spirit - think of the vibrancy and the vivaciousness of Eva, Linda, Claudia, Naomi, Christy et al - but also the ability. These are girls who could do both Bikinis and Balenciaga. They were equally at home sashaying down a runway for Victoria's Secret as they were for Versace. They could sell anything, make up, cars, holidays in st tropez, restaurants... They captured the imagination of a generation, and if the current season ad campaigns are anything to go by, they still have them.

Maybe the Victoria's Secret girls - Doutzen, Miranda, Alessandra, Adriana et al - maybe they're not quite the same. They're not bigger than big, they don't say things like "I don't get out of bed for less than $10 000" (can you even imagine that coming out of perennial nice girl miranda's mouth?). Maybe they don't throw telephones and get seduced by African war lords and live a jet-set lifestyle. Maybe they're just normal girls like Miranda who go to the gym, live a clean, healthy (if quite spare) lifestyle and marry their multi-millionaire hot actor boyfriends. Hmm. so normal. But do you see my point? They might not be quite over the top. But perhaps this 90s revival isn't so much a redux as it is an homage. We've learnt the lessons of our past - sometimes you CAN have too much of a good thing. That's why we're paring back in all aspects of our lifes. Maybe the supermodels of now are going to be less crazy and more classy.

Maybe one of them is Miranda Kerr.
