I just got back from seeing Heartbreaker with Vanessa Paradis and Romain Duris. A bit of fluff when I most needed it, and somehow - despite being oh so cheesy and oh so unbelievable - a lot more clever than any other rom com I've seen recently. What I loved the most was the recurrence of terrible english/american cliches, especially that wonderful film, dirty dancing. Vanessa Paradis is Julie, adorably gap-toothed "volcano" who has reigned her wild side in to get ahead in business and love. Romain Duris is Alex, debonair-du-jour who, along with his sister and brother in law (totally hilarious in that pantomime french comedy way) are paid by the families and friends of women in unhappy relationships to seduce them and break up the couple. So far, so ridiculous. Dirty Dancing just happens to be Julie's favourite film, and in a scene that manages to be both hilarious and honest, they dance that pivotal, who could forget it dance from the final scene. Coming from someone who secretly loves Dirty Dancing, this movie had a magical comical touch to it because of the way it incorporated such a glorious guilty secret. Alex spends half the movie trying to memorise this dance, practising with his brother in law and stripping down to reveal a very un-Patrick Swayze whittled body to two-step around his hotel room. Or maybe it's the comforting fact that even cooler-than-thou people like Vanessa Paradis secretly know all the moves to the mambo - including Jennifer Grey's adorable little head shake. I couldn't stop laughing. And I can't think of a better way to ring in the new year.
