I never got all the fuss about Kristen Stewart until now. Elle Uk has the horrible habit of styling every cover star in the exact same way - rock chick with an edge. I'm glad that with their recent cover stars (chloe sevigny, kylie, and now kristen) they have adopted a more natural and heterogenous approach. they have realised, i think, that they don't have to style everyone in the same way in order to cultivate an 'image'. their inventive covers and intelligent discussion of contemporary issues will forever mark them out as one of the best magazines out there. I like the Chloe Sevigny was allowed to show her playful side in miu miu and lace, and Kylie was given the chance to play dress up with the new season fashion. And here Kristen isn't a goth-chic or a 'who-gives-a-fuck' starlet, she's just a 20 year old caught up in something bigger than herself - and which 20 year old isn't, whether it be a multi-million dollar movie franchise or the stress of university studies? I love the picture in the triptych of kristen hiding her face. It reveals a lot about its subject, i think.  The title of the editorial is 'Just a Girl', how apt, really. It is sometimes very easy to forget how young some of these stars are. Not easy to forget in the way that thousands of teenage girls fawn over their every movement, but easy to forget in the way that they deal with all of this on a daily basis in, often, a more mature way than stars double their age.

Unlike the prematurely sexed-up and quite frankly distasteful Emma Watson spread of last year, kristen stewart just looks radiantly beautiful... the kind of beauty that you have to avert your eyes from. and I never thought i would be saying those words about kristen. I am interested to read the accompanying article, if it is anything as fascinating as this editorial it will be one of the better magazine profiles i have ever read. Elle UK tends to swing either way - they open up the interview to fan questions posted on their twitter and website and the thing descends into silliness and the cliche. Or they have interviews like the one with Lindsay Lohan last september, in which the author turns 3 text messages and 20 minutes of face to face time with her into a 4 page article that intelligently explored the social phenomenon of 'lilo'. I have a feeling that this article is going to be of the latter variety. Say what you will about Kristen Stewart, but boring she is not. She is the girl, after all, who declined to comment about her relationship with Rpattz to Vogue US (and was, it is rumoured, cut from the cover for Blake Lively because of it). Anyone who has the balls to stick up to Anna Wintour is worth a read, i think.
