You can tell that a place - a new place, or at least new to you - will become part of the fabric of your everyday existence instantly. None of this faffing about. With local cafes, just as in love, its all about the first impression. When you know, you know, and it's as simple as that. You know from that first smell of coffee, that first sight of what is without a doubt the best muesli in sydney; soft figs and crunchy granola and a goopy glob of rosey rhubarb. You know from the way they talk to you - like a local from the start - the way the tables are so close together you can't help but join in on neighbour's conversation, the way it's always busy but you can always get a table, the way they don't rush you to leave even when you've been lingering over glasses of water for half an hour. I knew all of that the very first time I went, even though it was pouring with rain, even though my feet were wet and I was very cold, even though I only had chai tea and nothing to eat. And the best things about places like these, the ones that become regulars, the ones you can't imagine a sunday morning without, is that you never, ever lose that feeling. It's as good today as it ever was when I first discovered it, soaking wet and ebullient, drinking chai tea in a corner and talking about nothing at all.
