Right now I've been feeling outfits that are simple. That don't require any thought at all. Simple, cuffed navy blue pants pilfered from my mum's wardrobe. A charcoal grey sweatshirt with sleeves rolled up the forearm, or a classic topshop button down in oatmeal, slightly baggy tee shirts over long skirts, a pair of leopard print flats for something a little extra. It's heat that does this. When the weather is so hot you can feel yourself melting the last thing you want to worry about is fancy clothing and cumbersome heels. That's why, on recent outings "on the town" I've skipped the party dresses and sky high shoes for pants with pockets deep enough to fit everything I need and a simple sweatshirt. Simplicity of dress so you can make an effort in other places - like your tangerine lipstick or your whiskey sours or your fancy dance moves to lil john's snap your fingers at hip hop night at the flinders hotel.
The minute I saw this photo I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Garance Dore's new site is wonderful. There's something about this photo that transcends fashion photography, street style shots, any kind of trend or fad. This shot is beautiful. It speaks of Italy, and peacefulness and quiet simplicity. Her shots have always had some of that easiness, that calm that is missing from other street style blogs that bombard you with images and excite your fashion sense. In this photo - in this moment - it's not so much about that girl's beautifully tailored jumper or her litany of delicate, softly softly jewellery, or her lightly balayaged hair, or the way her sleeves are roleld up to just the right length. Somehow it's about more than just that. It's about that Roman turkish delight sunset, the city blurring into the distance, the twinkling fairy lights, the symmetry of classic architecture. The way I see it - this is a photo that happens to have street style in it, not a street style moment that also happens to be a photo. Sometimes it's not about clothes at all.
And it's at those times that your clothes, in all their quiet unassuming simplicity, can really stand out. Because even though this photo is about much more than this girl, all I can really think about, is my god, I want that shirt.
