double vision

There is a way to wear chanel haute couture, and there is a way to wear chanel haute couture, and this is of the latter. when you can wear haute couture without it even looking like haute couture (and yet, here's the thing, it still DOES look like haute couture), you're doing something right. Am I not making any sense? well it is half 12 in the morning and I've just taken my brother out for his first "legal" drink.
Haute couture has this reputation of being a bit staid. You know, old ladies who lunch and who survived the credit crunch with their spending habits intact. The type of women who even get their pyjamas custom made. That's why HC houses go to so much lengths to get "hip" celebrities filling their front rows come july and january. it's all about getting a reputation for something that money simply can't buy: cool.

This is why Alexa Chung tops best dressed lists. There are a handful of girls - Kate Moss, Margherita Missoni, the Olsen Twins and Alexa Chung - who wear Haute Couture as if was the first thing they picked up off their floor, the only clean thing in their closet. Some people - like Caroline Sieber, Lauren Santo Domingo - they just make it looklike hard work. To paraphrase everyone's favourite dad, Sandy Cohen, or that mean guy in Centre Stage, you want to see the beauty, you don't want to see the effort behind it. That was ballet, and Haute couture is remarkably similar, although you have to cultivate a little bit of double vision. You but simultaneously want to notice the effort of 1000 hours of laborious hand stitching, and yet also not notice it. You need to wear Haute Couture as if it is nothing, but still respect it. Tread the fine line between costume and normality. Alexa does this with aplomb. She has a messy updo, simple ballet flats, and one lone ring to complement what is by all definitions an incredible show-stopper of a dress.

And still, she can DJ in it, drink in it, dance in it... That's the thing about Haute Couture. what's the point of all this creativity, all this effort, all this incredible, incredible beauty if you can't wear it? It's like buying a stunning tea set and never using it, or having a bugatti veyron in your garage but never driving it (obligatory top gear reference, there you go little bro). Yes, fashion is art, but it is also wearable art, and so in that sense, more important than art, because it is life. Who would have thought that when it comes down to it haute couture could be equated with reality? Well, that's what Alexa Chung does, and that, is why we love her.
