One of the great joys of going to Europe is COS. A beauty of a store, all of that scandinavian clean design on the noisy high street, it doesn't have an online store or an Australian presence and thus needs to be mobbed at every opportunity. I first discovered COS 2 years ago now, travelling in London after school with a friend. I wandered in there on the way to Liberty and have never looked back, falling in love with their oversized jumpers, cuffed chinos, crisp white shirts and general laid-back easiness. Clothes from COS are clothes that you can sit back and relax in. I assembled my new wardrobe in an outfit straight from COS - a thin navy blue o-neck sweater and a pair of beige trews. Super comfy, and it didn't matter that they got roughed around as I tried to work out which way the Allen key screwed.
So you can imagine my great surprise and joy when I found out that COS has a magazine. And it's free! And you can just pick it up, like that, in the store. None of this 7.50 pound bullshit that Net-A-Porter is trying to pull over us. COS's magazine is free and wonderful, a mix of the Gentlewoman and Wallpaper, with some pages made out of recycled paper and others of that glossy, sheeny magazine paper that they don't seem to use anymore. They have spreads with the COS clothing, interviews with various lads about town and variations on the theme of each issue. This one was called 'Work' and was all about careers, occupations and life callings. They had close up photography of a baker at work, a fashion spread of workwear (COS style, with ankle boots and knee length skirts and boxy coats and long socks), interviews with Vivienne Westwood's PA and the creative director of Penguin Books and more. It was a fantastic read - I devoured it more hungrily than I did the spaghetti Vongole at Jamie's Italian that I had for lunch - and proper, old school inspiration. Just another reason to go back to Europe, really!
